      • Prognostic factors associated with the success rates of posterior orthodontic miniscrew implants

        Sung-Bin Hong,Budi Kusnoto,Eun-Jeong Kim,Ellen A BeGole,Hyeon-Shik Hwang,Hoi-Jeong Lim 대한치과교정학회 2016 대한치과교정학회지 Vol.46 No.2

Objective: To systematically review previous studies and to assess, via a subgroup meta-analysis, the combined odds ratio (OR) of prognostic factors affecting the success of miniscrew implants (MIs) inserted into the buccal posterior region. Methods: Three electronic searches that were limited to articles on clinical human studies using MIs that were published in English prior to March 2015 were conducted. The outcome measure was the success of MIs. Patient factors included age, sex, and jaw of insertion (maxilla vs. mandible), while the MI factors included length and diameter. A meta-analysis was performed on 17 individual studies. The quality of each study was assessed for non-randomized studies and quantified using the Newcastle-Ottawa Scale. The meta-analysis outcome was a combined OR. Subgroup and sensitivity analyses based on the study design, study quality, and sample size of miniscrews implanted were performed. Results: Significantly higher success rates were revealed for MIs inserted in the maxilla, for patients ≥ 20 years of age, and for long MIs (≥ 8 mm) and MIs with a large diameter (> 1.4 mm). All subgroups acquired homogeneity, and the combined OR of the prospective studies (OR, 3.67; 95% confidence interval [CI], 2.10−6.44) was significantly higher in the maxilla than that in the retrospective studies (OR, 2.10; 95% CI, 1.60−2.74). Conclusions: When a treatment plan is made, these risk factors, i.e. jaw of insertion, age, MI length, and MI diameter, should be taken into account, while sex is not critical to the success of MIs.

      • The Effectiveness of Protraction Face Mask Therapy : A Meta-analysis

Kim, Jeong-Hwan,Viana, Marlos A.G.,Grabe, Tom M.,Omerza, Frank F.,BeGole, Ellen A. 가톨릭대학교 2000 Bulletin of The Catholic Research Institutes of Me Vol.28 No.-

This study examined effectiveness of maxillary protraction with orthopedic appliances in Class III patients. A meta-analysis of relevant literature was performed to determine whether a consensus exists regarding controversial issues such as the timing of treatment and the use of adjunctive intraoral appliances. An initial search identified 440 articles relating to Class III malocclusion. Among those articles, 11 studies in English and 3 studies in foreign languages met the previously established selection criteria. Data from the selected studies were categorized by age and appliance groups for the meta-analysis. The sample sizes were categorized by age and appliance groups for the meta-analysis. The sample sizes were comparable between the groups. The statistical synthesis of changes before and after treatment in selected cephalometric landmarks showed no distinct difference between the palatal expansion group and nonexpansion group except for 1 variable, upper incisor angulation, which increased to a greater degree in the nonexpansion group. This finding implies that more skeletal effect and less dental change are produced in the expansion appliance group. Examination of the effects of age revealed greater treatment changes in the younger group. Results indicate that protraction face mask therapy is effective in patients who are growing, but to a lesser degree in patients who are older than 10 years of age, and that protraction in combination with an initial period of expansion may provide more significant skeletal effects. Overall mean values and corresponding standard deviations for the studies selected can also be used to estimate mean treatment effects expected from the use of protraction face mask (American Journal of Orthodontics and Orthopedics 114:675085, 1999)

EEG Classification of ADHD and Normal Children Using Non-linear Features and Neural Network

        Mohammad Reza Mohammadi,Ali Khaleghi,Ali Moti Nasrabadi,Safa Rafieivand,Moslem Begol,Hadi Zarafshan 대한의용생체공학회 2016 Biomedical Engineering Letters (BMEL) Vol.6 No.2

Purpose Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)is a neuro-developmental disorder that is characterized byhyperactivity, inattention and abrupt behaviors. This studyproposes an approach for distinguishing ADHD childrenfrom normal children using their EEG signals when performinga cognitive task. Methods In this study, 30 children with ADHD and 30 agematchedhealthy children without neurological disordersunderwent electroencephalography (EEG) when performinga task to stimulate their attention. Fractal dimension (FD),approximate entropy and lyapunov exponent were extractedfrom EEG signals as non-linear features. In order to improvethe classification results, double input symmetrical relevance(DISR) and minimum Redundancy Maximum Relevance(mRMR) methods were used to select the best features asinputs to multi-layer perceptron (MLP) neural network. Results As expected, children with ADHD had more delaysand were less accurate in doing the cognitive task. Also, theextracted non-linear features revealed that non-linear indiceswere greater in different regions of the brain of ADHDchildren compared to healthy children. This could indicate amore chaotic behavior of ADHD children while performinga cognitive task. Finally, the accuracy of 92.28% and 93.65%were achieved using mRMR method and DISR methodusing MLP, respectively. Conclusions The results of this study demonstrate the abilityof the non-linear features to distinguish ADHD children fromhealthy children.
