Can Fecal Calprotectin Level Be Used as a Markers of Inflammation in the Diagnosis and Follow-Up of Cow's Milk Protein Allergy?

        Ömer Faruk Beşer,,Selim Sancak,Tülay Erkan,Tufan Kutlu,Haluk Çokuğraş,Fügen Ç. Çokuğraş 대한천식알레르기학회 2014 Allergy, Asthma & Immunology Research Vol.6 No.1

Purpose: Calprotectin is a cytosolic protein with immunomodulatory, antimicrobial, and antiproliferative actions. The concentration of calprotectin increases in infection, inflammation, and malignancy. We determined if calprotectin can be used as a marker for the diagnosis and follow-up of bowel inflammation in cow’s milk protein allergy (CMPA). Methods: In total, 32 patients newly diagnosed with CMPA were included (24 IgE-mediated, 8 non-IgE-mediated). In all subjects, a complete blood count, total IgE, cow’s milk-specific IgE, and fecal calprotectin (FC) were assessed before and after a cow’s milk protein (CMP) elimination diet was started. The results were compared with those of 39 healthy children. Results: The mean FC value before the CMP elimination diet was 516±311 μg/g in the 32 patients with CMPA and 296±94 μg/g in the control group (P=0.011). The mean FC value after the diet in these patients was 254±169 μg/g, which was significantly different from the mean value before the CMP elimination diet (P<0.001). When we compared FC levels before the CMP elimination diet in the IgE-mediated group with the control group, we found no significant statistical difference (P=0.142). The mean FC value before the CMP elimination diet was 886±278 μg/g in the non-IgE-mediated group and 296±94 μg/g in the control group; this difference was statistically significant (P<0.001). In the IgE-mediated and non-IgE-mediated groups, FC values after CMP elimination diet were 218±90 μg/g and 359±288 μg/g, respectively, and FC values before CMP elimination diet were 392±209 μg/g and 886±278 μg/g, respectively; these differences were statistically significant (P=0.001 and P=0.025, respectively). Conclusions: FC levels may be a useful marker for follow-up treatment and recurrence determination in CMPA.

Experimental investigation of residual stresses in cold formed steel sections

Miroslav Beševic 국제구조공학회 2012 Steel and Composite Structures, An International J Vol.12 No.6

Residual stresses play important role for design of steel structural members. Cold formed sections usually have residual stresses caused by roll forming. When compared to stresses caused by the working load, especially for compressed members, the effects of residual stresses can be favorable or unfavorable depending on magnitude, orientation and distribution of these stresses. The research presented in this paper includes experimental investigations of residual stresses, initial imperfections and material properties on cold formed carbon steel open cross sections. Experimental results have been compared to results obtained in similar tests with stainless and high strength steel cross sections. Theoretical and experimental research, conducted for cold formed open cross sections, are important for design of axially compressed members. This paper presents two methods of residual stresses investigation: magnetic method and method of pre-drilled holes and obtained results have been compared with results of residual stresses from other authors.

Managing maritime automobile terminals: an approach toward decision-support model for higher productivity

Bojan Beškovnik,Elen Twrdy 대한조선학회 2011 International Journal of Naval Architecture and Oc Vol.3 No.4

The article describes actions and strategies to obtain higher productivity on maritime automobile terminals. The main focus is on elaboration of efficient and effective organizational structure to model and implement short-term, mid-term and long-term strategies. In addition, with an empiric approach we combined the analyses of current findings in important scientific papers and our acknowledgments in practical research of north Adriatic maritime automobile terminals. The main goal is to propose actions towards increasing system’s productivity. Based on our research of the north Adriatic maritime automobile terminals and with Lambert’s model an in-deep analysis of limiting factors, user’s expectations and possibilities for productivity increase has been performed. Moreover, with our acknowledgments a three-level decision-support model is presented. With an adequate model implementation it is possible to efficiently develop and implement different strategies of productivity measurement and productivity increase, especially in the fields of internal transport productivity, entrance/exit truck gates operations and wagon manipulations. According to our observation a significant increase might be achieved in all three fields.

Burcu Sancar Beşen 한국섬유공학회 2019 Fibers and polymers Vol.20 No.12

In the present paper, it was aimed to produce disposable antibacterial textile surfaces with applications of TTOcapsules having different wall materials. For this purpose, tea tree oil (TTO) was encapsulated into β-cyclodextrin (β-CD),polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and Arabic gum (GA), and the prepared capsules were characterized with scanning electronmicroscope (SEM) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) analyses. The capsules, which were proved that theyhad been prepared successfully by the analyses, were applied to the 100 % viscose nonwoven fabric surfaces by paddingmethod at the concentration of 20 % (w/v). The treated fabric samples were characterized through SEM and FTIR analyses,as well as the antibacterial activities of the samples were evaluated against E. coli and S. aureus bacteria. The results indicatedthat the TTO/β-CD, TTO/PVA and TTO/GA capsules could be successfully applied onto textiles and the samples gainedantibacterial activity properties at the different levels depending on the wall materials.

The Effects of Galantamine Hydrobromide Treatment on Dehydroepiandrosterone Sulfate and Cortisol Levels in Patients with Chronic Fatigue Syndrome

        Tayfun Turan,Hasan Basri Izgi,Saliha Ozsoy,Fatih Tanrıverdi,Mustafa Basturk,Akif Asdemir,Aslı Beşirli,Ertugrul Esel,Seher Sofuoglu 대한신경정신의학회 2009 PSYCHIATRY INVESTIGATION Vol.6 No.3

Objective: Mental fatigue, cognitive disorders, and sleep disturbances seen in chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) may be attributed to cholinergic deficit. A functional deficiency of cholinergic neurotransmission may cause the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis hypoactivity seen in CFS. Therefore, we investigated the alterations in stress hormones such as cortisol and dehydroepiandrosterone sulfate (DHEAS) in CFS patients before and after 4- week administration of galantamine hydrobromide, a selective cetylcholinesterase inhibitor, and aimed to investigate whether there are any relationships between the probable hormonal changes and cholinergic treatment. Methods: Basal levels of cortisol and DHEAS were measured in 29 untreated CFS patients who were diagnosed according to Centers for Disease Control (CDC) criteria and in 20 healthy controls. In the patient group, four weeks after 8 ㎎/d galantamine hydrobromide treatment, cortisol and DHEAS levels were measured again. After the treatment 22 patients who stayed in study were divided into two subgroups as responders and nonresponders according to the reduction in their Newcastle Research Group ME/CFS Score Card (NRG) scores. Results: Important findings of this study are lower pre-and post-treatment cortisol levels and in all CFS patients compared to controls (F=4.129, p=0.049; F=4.803, p=0.035, respectively); higher basal DHEAS values and higher DHEAS/cortisol molar ratios which were normalized following four weeks’ treatment with 8 ㎎/d galantamine hydrobromide in the treatment-respondent group (F=5.382, p=0.029; F=5.722, p=0.025, respectively). Conclusion: The findings of the decrease in basal DHEAS levels and DHEAS/cortisol molar ratios normalizing with galantamine treatment may give some support to the cholinergic deficit hypothesis in CFS. On the Age of Information of Processor Sharing Queuing Systems

Gandarias, Beñat,Doncel, Josu,Assaad, Mohamad 한국통신학회 2023 Journal of communications and networks Vol.25 No.5

In this paper, we examine the Age of Information(AoI) of a source sending status updates to a monitor througha queue operating under the Processor Sharing (PS) discipline. While AoI has been well studied for various queuing models andpolicies, less attention has been given so far to the PS discipline. We first consider M/M/1/2 queue with and without preemptionand provide closed-form expressions of the average AoI in thiscase. We overcome the challenges of deriving the AoI expressionby employing the Stochastic Hybrid Systems (SHS) tool. We thenextend the analysis to the M/M/1 queue with one and two sourcesand provide numerical results for these cases. Our results showthat PS can outperform the M/M/1/1* queue in some cases.

Male Breast Cancer: 37-Year Data Study at a Single Experience Center in Turkey

        Fatih Selcukbiricik,Fatih Aydoğan,Nuran Beşe,Evin Büyükünal,Süheyla Serdengeçti,Deniz Tural 한국유방암학회 2013 Journal of breast cancer Vol.16 No.1

Purpose: The aim of this study is to evaluate the effects of prognostic factors on the overall survival (OS) and locoregional control (LC) among male breast cancer (MBC) patients treated at Cerrahpasa Medical School Hospital, along with a review of the related literature. Methods: The data of 86 patients treated for MBC from 1973 to 2010 are retrospectively reviewed. Patient demographics and clinical information, including the date of diagnosis, treatment, clinical course, and the date and causes of death are routinely recorded. Results: Median follow-up was 66 months. Isolated local-regional recurrence and distant metastases were observed in 15 (17.4%) and 24 (34.1%) of the cases, respectively. The 5-year OS rate was 65.8%; the disease-free survival rate was 72.4%, and the LC rate was 89.7%. The prognostic factors influencing local relapse were the T stage (p=0.002) and the chest wall muscular invasion (p=0.027) in the univariate analysis. The prognostic factors influencing OS were the presence of a positive axillary lymph node (p=0.001) and the T stage (p=0.001) in the univariate analysis. The T stage (p=0.008) and node (N) stage (p=0.038) were significant prognostic factors for OS in the multivariate analyses. Also, the T stage (p=0.034) was found to be significant for LC. Conclusion: We found that only the tumor size and lymph node status were independent prognostic factors for survival. In addition, only the tumor size was an independent prognostic factor for locoregional relapse. Modified radical mastectomy and conservative surgical procedures had similar outcomes for LC.

Ramberg–Osgood Stress–Strain Analysis of the Effects of Aging Treatment and Welding on IN600 with a Three-Stage Strain Hardening Behavior

        Heriberto Granados‑Becerra,Víctor H. López‑Morelos,Alberto Ruiz,Rafael García‑Hernández,Francisco F. Curiel‑López,Martin R. Barajas‑Alvarez 대한금속·재료학회 2022 METALS AND MATERIALS International Vol.28 No.6

The Ramberg–Osgood equation was applied to model the stress–strain behavior of heat-treated and welded specimens ofInconel 600 up to 0.2 and 0.175 mm/mm of strain, respectively. As-received and aged plates of Inconel 600 were gas metalarc welded to simulate repair of a component in operation. Dog bone shape specimens were tensile tested at a cross headspeed of 0.005 s−1 and the deformation was measured with an extensometer with a gage length of 20 mm. Microstructuralobservations were made in the optical and scanning electron microscope. Fitting the experimental data in the plastic regionof stress–strain curves to a novel three slopes Ramberg–Osgood model enabled estimation of the hardening coefficient, n. The value of n varied from 0.07 to 0.3 depending on the metallurgical condition of the specimen. A notorious increase wasobserved in the value of n for samples heat-treated beyond 25 h and in as-welded samples. The results of this work showeda very good correlation between the model and the experimental curves.
