Vol.0 No.29

Velvetweaving today: A worldwide overview Barbara Setsu Pickett
Vol.21 No.3
Velvet is a luxury cloth. In Fashion it dresses the Elite. In Interiors, it covers palace walls and upholsters elegant furniture. In every culture throughout its history velvet``s sumptuous surfaces denotes luxury, status, power, privilege and wealth. My humble aim is to reveal the artisan in the art-to comprehend the mastery of weaving techniques, to understand the design principles, to study the everyday practice of the weavers at work. In the few ateliers that still weave silk velvet by hand, I have documented their processes and now want to share this knowledge with the broader textile community in hopes of expanding the appreciation of their art. I approach as a fellow weaver striving to learn the mechanics, the practical aspects that guide the work from initial idea to finished cloth. I leave the difficulties of establishing provenance and other important analyses to my more learned textile historian colleagues.
Intra-industry Trade Exposure, Fragmentation, and Labor Adjustment
( Barbara Dluhosch ) 세종대학교 경제통합연구소 (구 세종대학교 국제경제연구소) 2006 Journal of Economic Integration Vol.21 No.2
Over the last two decades, labor market prospects of the low skilled in OECDcountries deteriorated sharply. Developments like these have been frequently traced back to low-cost competition from abroad. Yet, the Heckscher-Ohlin hypothesis is hard to reconcile with the fact that OECD-trade is for the most (and growing) part intraindustry trade (IIT). IIT is usually regarded as much less disruptive as it is considered to affect the regional composition of product demand, but not necessarily labor demand. The paper proposes a model of trade-induced technology choice in which, contrary to many beliefs, IIT generates substantial shifts in labor demand and employment. These changes are due to technology implementation being associated with spill-over effects related to business services and production fragmentation within and across firms. The model can account for a number of stylized facts of OECD-labor markets, including the bimodal growth of high and low-skilled services employment, and the recent concentration of demand for skill in management and business-service occupations, and is in line with statistics based on input-output tables suggesting that production methods changed in tandem with exposure to foreign competition.
A phenomenon of synesthesia in the Polish language
Vol.17 No.1
Physiological and Biochemical Analysis of Growth Abnormalities Associated with Plant Tissue Culture
Barbara Ruffoni,Marco Savona 한국원예학회 2013 Horticulture, Environment, and Biotechnology Vol.54 No.3
Micropropagation is an important tool in the multiplication of genetically uniform plants that possess desirable traits for horticultural industry. Like many other technologies, it has gone through different stages of evolution that focused mainly on the production efficiency in terms of quantity. However, several problems affecting the quality of the multiplied plants such as shoot tip necrosis, abnormal and inefficient root development, hyperhydration, fasciation and habituation, have not been adequately investigated using additives or modification of growth conditions. Molecular markers can be used to observe genome modifications of the cloned plants but genetic uniformity is not directly related to phenotypic uniformity, therefore molecular markers may not be useful to understand the bases of these undesirable phenomena. In general, although the tissue culture procedure produces quality propagules, the process induces a stress reaction in the developing plantlets. Plants may show a multitude of responses, including epigenetic variations. Epigenetic regulation is not only important for generating differentiated cell types during plant development, but also in maintaining the stability and integrity of their respective gene expression profiles. In plant tissue culture, changes in DNA methylation and in histone modifications have also been reported in many cases during the de-differentiation pathway, ranging from axillary shoot proliferation to protoplast formation. Information on molecular techniques is increasing rapidly together with the decreasing costs of the molecular detection. It is, therefore, important to employ epigenetic markers to understand all desirable or undesirable physiological responses that occur during tissue culture in the production of quality propagules.

Net Stable Funding Requirement under Basel III: Loan Portfolio Growth Matters
Barbara L’Huillier,Muhammad Suhail Rizwan,Dawood Ashraf 한국증권학회 2018 Asia-Pacific Journal of Financial Studies Vol.47 No.4
This paper evaluates the perceived stability-enhancing role of the net stable funding ratio (NSFR) requirement under Basel III and its impact on the balance sheets of banks. Using data from 647 banks located in 47 countries from 2003 to 2013, we find that the NSFR would have played a financial stability-enhancing role if it had been implemented during the sample period. However, the NSFR requirement would also have had a loan portfolio shrinkage affect and increases the possibility of sub-optimal loan portfolio selection. Our results suggest that there are costs and benefits to implementing the NSFR requirement.
