        Computational fluid dynamic analysis of mass transfer and hydrodynamics in a planetary centrifugal bioreactor

        Planetary centrifugal bioreactors are promising candidates for cell culture platforms since there is no pollution caused by stirring blades. In this work, the fluid structure in a planetary centrifugal bioreactor was investigated using the computational fluid dynamics (CFD) method. The effects of operating conditions on the oxygen transfer rate (OTR), mixing efficiency and shear environment of the bioreactor were studied with the revolution speed (N) ranging from 60 to 160 rpm and the rotation-to-revolution speed ratio (i) from 2 to 1. The results show that the volumetric mass transfer coefficient (kLa), turbulence intensity, volumetric power consumption, and shear stress increase along with the increase of the revolution and rotation speeds. Furthermore, the rotation in the opposite direction to the revolution is beneficial to the performance of the bioreactor. The planetary centrifugal bioreactor has a higher kLa of 50- 200/h and a lower average shear stress of 0.01-0.05 Pa in comparison with conventional stirred tank bioreactors, which makes it suitable for biological culture of oxygen-consuming cells and shear-sensitive cells.

        Silicon-Germanium Microphotonic Switches

        Two microphotonic switches have been proposed and fabricated in a silicon-based silicon-germanium material system by using silicon optical bench technology. The switches are con¯gured for a 3 £ 2 symmetrical structure of three input waveguides, a central section, and two output waveguides. The operating wavelengths of the switches are specially designed in C-band, i.e. 1530 to 1570 nm. The measured average crosstalk is about ¡ 20 dB, and total insertion loss is about5dB.

        중국 신세대들의 저항적 온라인 참여 연구

        중국에서 전통미디어가 여전히 정부의 엄격한 관리 아래 있고 정부를 대변하는 역할을 수행하고 있는 가운데, 온라인 미디어는 신세대들이 자신들의 지식과 기술들을 발휘하여 자유화 의지를 펼치고 다양한 자아정체성의 형식들을 모색하는 공간으로서 이해될 수 있다. 온라인 미디어의 주요 이용자로서 중국의 신세대는 사회주의 하의 경제적 자유주의 정책을 특징으로 하는 중국 근대화의 후기 단계에서 중국식 개인화 과정의 산물로 볼 수 있다. 국가가 다양한 삶의 안전망들에 대한 책임을 시장과 개인에게 넘기면서 신세대는 상시적인 고용의 불안정 조건들 속에 놓여있고, 이는 현실 사회의 불평등에 대한 이들의 인식을 더욱 첨예하게 하고, 중국 정부에 대한 불만과 저항 정서를 키우는 주요 원인이 되고 있다. 시나 웨이보의 담론분석 결과, 네티즌들은 부정부패 공무원들과 공권력뿐만 아니라 중국 정부와 공무원, 공권력을 자신들과 대립하는 진영으로 묘사하고 강한 적대감을 드러낸다. 이들은 자신들을 핍박받는 대중들로 규정하지만, 다시 일반대중들과 구별해서 스스로를 뛰어난 능력을 가진 정부의 감시자로서 주체화하고 권능감을 표출하기도 한다. 또한 신조어, 에둘러 말하기, 반어법, 욕설의 위장과 같이, 온라인 공간에서 정부의 검열망을 우회하고 무력화시키면서 자신들의 틈새를 만들어나가는 담론전술들이 사용되었다. While traditional media in China is under the strict government restriction and play an advocate role for the government, online media is a place for young generation to utilize their knowledge and technology to seek for liberation will and various self-identities. China’s young generation who are the main users of online media can be seen as a result of Chinese way of individualization during post stage of China’s modernization which is characterized by market economy under socialism. The young generation are put under unstable employment when the country transfers the responsibility of social safety nets to the market and the individuals. This sharpens the recognition on inequality of the society and increases complaints and resistance against Chinese government. As a result of critical discourse analysis of Sina Weibo, netizens show hostility toward not only corrupted public affairs and government authority, but also Chinese government and public affair and polarized into opposing camps. While netizens express themselves as persecuted public, they are empowered by being surveillant of the dominant power, distinguished from the public and superior to them. Lastly, young generation try to avoid the government censorship and seek for an opportunity through various discursive tactics such as neologism, circumlocution, irony, and disguised swear words.

        Analysis of the extrusion pressure of a cylindrical extruder for extruding highly viscous fluids

        Extrusion pressure is crucial for the security and performance of a cylindrical extruder during the extrusion process. In this study, a validated CFD model was adopted to evaluate the relationship between the extrusion velocity, fluid viscosity, and the extrusion pressure of a cylindrical extruder while extruding highly viscous fluids. The simulated and experimental results of the extrusion pressure and velocity profiles show good agreement. This study reveals that extrusion pressure evolution can be divided into two stages during the extrusion process. At stage I, the distance between the ram and the bottom of the vessel (liquid height) is greater than the critical height and the extrusion pressure remains almost constant. At stage II, the distance is less than the critical height and the extrusion pressure increases exponentially. The results indicate that an increase in extrusion velocity and fluid viscosity leads to a linear increase in the extrusion pressure at stage I. Furthermore, by introducing a pressure number, Np, and a pressurerelated Reynolds number, Rep, a novel correlation of the extrusion pressure with the extrusion velocity, viscosity of highly viscous fluids and liquid height has been developed.

        Time-Dependent Changes of Urethral Function in Diabetes Mellitus: A Review

        This article reviewed the current knowledge on time-course manifestation of diabetic urethral dysfunction (DUD), and explored an early intervention target to prevent the contribution of DUD to the progression of diabetes-induced impairment of the lower urinary tract (LUT). In the literature search through PubMed, key words used included “diabetes mellitus,” “diabetic urethral dysfunction,” and “diabetic urethropathy.” Polyuria and hyperglycemia induced by diabetes mellitus (DM) can cause the time-dependent changes in functional and morphological manifestations of DUD. In the early stage, it promotes urethral dysfunction characterized by increased urethral pressure during micturition. However, the detrusor muscle of the bladder tries to compensate for inducing complete voiding by increasing the duration and amplitude of bladder contractions. As the disease progresses, it can induce an impairment of coordinated micturition due to dyssynergic activity of external urethra sphincter, leading to detrusor-sphincter dyssynergia. The impairment of relaxation mechanisms of urethral smooth muscles (USMs) may additionally be attributable to decreased responsiveness to nitric oxide, as well as increased USM responsiveness to α1-adrenergic receptor stimulation. In the late stage, diabetic neuropathy may play an important role in inducing LUT dysfunction, showing that the decompensation of the bladder and urethra, which can cause the decrease of voiding efficiency and the reduced thickness of the urothelium and the atrophy of striated muscle bundles, possibly leading to the vicious cycle of the LUT dysfunction. Further studies to increase our understandings of the functional and molecular mechanisms of DUD are warranted to explore potential targets for therapeutic intervention of DM-induced LUT dysfunction.

        WLSD: A Perceptual Stimulus Model Based Shape Descriptor

        Motivated by the Weber`s Law, this paper proposes an efficient and robust shape descriptor based on the perceptual stimulus model, called Weber`s Law Shape Descriptor (WLSD). It is based on the theory that human perception of a pattern depends not only on the change of stimulus intensity, but also on the original stimulus intensity. Invariant to scale and rotation is the intrinsic properties of WLSD. As a global shape descriptor, WLSD has far lower computation complexity while is as discriminative as state-of-art shape descriptors. Experimental results demonstrate the strong capability of the proposed method in handling shape retrieval.

        Electromagnetic Torque Characteristics Analysis of Nuclear Half-Speed Turbine Generator with Stator Winding Inter-Turn Short Circuit Fault

        To research the variation characteristics and infl uence factors of air gap magnetic fi eld and electromagnetic torque of nuclear power half-speed turbine generator with stator winding inter-turn short circuit, the two-dimensional transient electromagnetic fi eld of generator-external circuit-grid coupling mathematical model is established by fi eld-circuit-network coupling method. Taking the national laboratory’s generator as an example, and comparing the simulation results of the inter-turn short circuit of the armature winding with experimental data, the correctness of the model is validated. On this basis, the simulation model of a 1407MVA nuclear power half-speed turbine generator is built. Then the stator winding inter-turn short circuit fault is simulated when the generator is connected to the grid with rated load. The characteristics of air gap fl ux density and electromagnetic torque are obtained before and after fault, as well as, the relationship between their each component and the fault degree is obtained. At the same time, the variation law of air gap fl ux density and electromagnetic torque is obtained when the relative position between fault winding and magnetic pole changes. The theoretical reference for fault diagnosis and localization using harmonic electromagnetic torque after fault is provided
