China and the RMA

( Bao Cun Wang ),( James Mulvenon ) 한국국방연구원 2000 The Korean Journal of Defense Analysis Vol.12 No.2

This article explores the possibility of a revolution in military affairs (RMA) in the Chinese People`s Liberation Army. After evaluating the social, economic, and technological foundation for an RMA in China, the authors then outline the theorctical underpinning of the RMA and its relation to military innovation. Using this analysis as a template, the article then assesses the current status of the RMA in the PLA, paying particular attention to C4 I modernization, as well as preparations for the implementation of the RMA at the unit level, including network-based war-gaming, IW training, IW exercises, and acquisition of informationized equipment. The authors conclude that the PLA has already initiated an RMA, whether the Chinese leadership realizes it or not. Further, the rapid informationization of Chinese society and the dual-use nature of the global information economy have permitted the Chinese military to make important strides. At the same time, however, China`s RMA has only begun to change its largely semi-mechanized force, while the RMA in countries such as the United States is much farther along. As n result, Chinese military thinkers have advocated "walking on two legs," pursuing mechanization and informationalization of the PLA simultaneously to carry out both symmetric and asymmetric strategies.

Hypoglycemic effect of Rehmannie Radix Preparata (Sookjihwang) extract in streptozotocin-induced diabetic rats

        Shin-Jyung Kang,Cun Liu Bao,Soojin Park,Ae-Jung Kim 한국영양학회 2010 Nutrition Research and Practice Vol.4 No.5

Rhemannie Radix Preparata (RRP) has been previously employed in traditional oriental medicine as a treatment for diabetic thirst and improving blood flow. The aim of this study was to evaluate its hypoglycemic control by assaying the activities of key enzymes of carbohydrate metabolism in streptozotocin-(STZ)-induced diabetic rats. Further, RRP extracts were prepared in water (RRPW), in 50% ethanol (RRP50), and in 100% ethanol (RRP100), respectively, and compared for their actions in diabetic rats. The oral treatment of RRP (5 ㎎/㎏ b.w./d) to diabetic rats for 21 days resulted in a significant decline in blood glucose by 67% compared to diabetic control rats (P < 0.05). The altered activities of glucokinase, glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD), 6-phosphogluconate dehydrogenase (6PGD), and acetyl CoA carboxylase (ACC) in the livers of diabetic rats were reversed significantly to near-normal levels by the administration of RRP (P < 0.05). Among the three RRP extracts, RRP100 was the most effective in terms of hypoglycemic action. However, the administration of RRP to diabetic rats did not improve insulin production. The modulatory effects of RRP100 on the attenuation of carbohydrate enzyme activities appear to hold promise for widespread use for the treatment of diabetes in the future.

CT-Guided Microcoil Localization of Small Peripheral Pulmonary Nodules to Direct Video-Assisted Thoracoscopic Resection without the Aid of Intraoperative Fluoroscopy

        Huang Zhen-guo,Wang Cun-li,Sun Hong-liang,Li Chuan-dong,Gao Bao-xiang,Chen He,Yang Min-xing 대한영상의학회 2021 Korean Journal of Radiology Vol.22 No.7

Objective: To evaluate the feasibility, safety, and effectiveness of CT-guided microcoil localization of solitary pulmonary nodules (SPNs) for guiding video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS). Materials and Methods: Between June 2016 and October 2019, 454 consecutive patients with 501 SPNs who received CTguided microcoil localization before VATS in our institution were enrolled. The diameter of the nodules was 0.93 ± 0.49 cm, and the shortest distance from the nodules to the pleura was 1.41 ± 0.95 cm. The distal end of the microcoil was placed less than 1 cm away from the nodule, and the proximal end was placed outside the visceral pleura. VATS was performed under the guidance of implanted microcoils without the aid of intraoperative fluoroscopy. Results: All 501 nodules were marked with microcoils. The time required for microcoil localization was 12.8 ± 5.2 minutes. Microcoil localization-related complications occurred in 179 cases (39.4%). None of the complications required treatment. A total of 463 nodules were successfully resected under the guidance of implanted microcoils. VATS revealed 38 patients with dislocated microcoils, of which 28 underwent wedge resection (21 cases under the guidance of the bleeding points of pleural puncture, 7 cases through palpation), 5 underwent direct lobectomy, and the remaining 5 underwent a conversion to thoracotomy. In 4 cases, a portion of the microcoil remained in the lung parenchyma. Conclusion: CT-guided microcoil localization of SPNs is safe and reliable. Marking the nodule and pleura simultaneously with microcoils can effectively guide the resection of SPNs using VATS without the aid of intraoperative fluoroscopy.

Modification of C-doped a-SiO2 after Swift Heavy-Ion Irradiation

        Zhi-Guang Wang,Cun-Bao Liu,Hang Zang,Kong-Fang Wei,Cun-Feng Yao 한국물리학회 2009 THE JOURNAL OF THE KOREAN PHYSICAL SOCIETY Vol.55 No.6

Amorphous SiO2 (a-SiO2) thin films were thermally grown on single-crystalline silicon. These a-SiO2/Si samples were first implanted (C-doped) with 100-keV carbon ion at room temperature (RT) at a dose of 5.0 × 1017 C-ions/cm2 and were then irradiated at RT by using 853 MeV Pb ions at doses of 5.0 × 1011, 1.0 × 1012, 2.0 × 1012, and 5.0 × 1012 Pb-ions/cm2, respectively. The microstructures and the photoluminescence (PL) properties of these samples induced by Pb ions were investigated using fluorescence spectroscopy and transmission electron microscopy. We found that high-energy Pb-ion irradiation could induce the formation of a new phase and a change in the PL property of C-doped a-SiO2/Si samples. The relationship between the observed phenomena and the ion irradiation parameters is briefly discussed. Amorphous SiO2 (a-SiO2) thin films were thermally grown on single-crystalline silicon. • Study on the Relationship Between CXCR4 Expression and Perineural Invasion in Pancreatic Cancer

Jiang, Yu-Mei,Li, Guang,Sun, Bao-Cun,Zhao, Xiu-Lan,Zhou, Zhong-Kai Asian Pacific Journal of Cancer Prevention 2014 Asian Pacific journal of cancer prevention Vol.15 No.12

Background: Recent reports have shown that C-X-C chemokine receptor 4 (CXCR4) plays an important role in metastasis. Despite a clear understanding of the protein's structure and properties, its functional role remains elusive. We conducted the present study to evaluate the expressions of CXCR4 in pancreatic cancer, and to investigate its relationship with clinicopathological parameters, especially perineural invasion(PNI). Materials and Methods: The association between CXCR4 expression and perineural invasion was determined by immunohistochemistry in pancreatic cancer patients (n=51). Results: CXCR4 expression was correlated with the existence of PNI and the type of PNI (p=0.042, p=0.040). TIMP-2 expression was also correlated with the existence, the pathway and degree of PNI (p=0.000, p=0.006, p=0.000). Conclusions: Our results suggest an association between PNI and expression of CXCR4 and TIMP-2 in pancreatic cancer. CXCR4 may promote the occurrence of PNI in pancreatic cancer cells by decreasing the inhibition of TIMPs on MMP.

      • Tumor Markers for Diagnosis, Monitoring of Recurrence and Prognosis in Patients with Upper Gastrointestinal Tract Cancer

        Jing, Jie-Xian,Wang, Yan,Xu, Xiao-Qin,Sun, Ting,Tian, Bao-Guo,Du, Li-Li,Zhao, Xian-Wen,Han, Cun-Zhi Asian Pacific Journal of Cancer Prevention 2014 Asian Pacific journal of cancer prevention Vol.15 No.23

To evaluate the value of combined detection of serum CEA, CA19-9, CA24-2, AFP, CA72-4, SCC, TPA and TPS for the clinical diagnosis of upper gastrointestinal tract (GIT) cancer and to analyze the efficacy of these tumor markers (TMs) in evaluating curative effects and prognosis. A total of 573 patients with upper GIT cancer between January 2004 and December 2007 were enrolled in this study. Serum levels of CEA, CA19-9, CA24-2, AFP, CA72-4, SCC, TPA and TPS were examined preoperatively and every 3 months postoperatively by ELISA. The sensitivity of CEA, CA19-9, CA24-2, AFP, CA72-4, SCC, TPA and TPS were 26.8%, 36.2%, 42.9%, 2.84%, 25.4%, 34.6%, 34.2% and 30.9%, respectively. The combined detection of CEA+CA199+CA242+CA724 had higher sensitivity and specificity in gastric cancer (GC) and cardiac cancer, while CEA+CA199+CA242+SCC was the best combination of diagnosis for esophageal cancer (EC). Elevation of preoperative CEA, CA19-9 and CA24-2, SCC and CA72-4 was significantly associated with pathological types (p<0.05) and TNM staging (p<0.05). Correlation analysis showed that CA24-2 was significantly correlated with CA19-9 (r=0.810, p<0.001). The levels of CEA, CA19-9, CA24-2, CA72-4 and SCC decreased obviously 3 months after operations. When metastasis and recurrence occurred, the levels of TMs significantly increased. On multivariate analysis, high preoperative CA72-4, CA24-2 and SCC served as prognostic factors for cardiac carcinoma, GC and EC, respectively. combined detection of CEA+CA199+CA242+SCC proved to be the most economic and practical strategy in diagnosis of EC; CEA+CA199+CA242+CA724 proved to be a better evaluation indicator for cardiac cancer and GC. CEA and CA19-9, CA24-2, CA72-4 and SCC, examined postoperatively during follow-up, were useful to find early tumor recurrence and metastasis, and evaluate prognosis. AFP, TPA and TPS have no significant value in diagnosis of patients with upper GIT cancer.

      • Colossal grain growth yields single-crystal metal foils by contact-free annealing

        Jin, Sunghwan,Huang, Ming,Kwon, Youngwoo,Zhang, Leining,Li, Bao-Wen,Oh, Sangjun,Dong, Jichen,Luo, Da,Biswal, Mandakini,Cunning, Benjamin V.,Bakharev, Pavel V.,Moon, Inyong,Yoo, Won Jong,Camacho-Mojica American Association for the Advancement of Scienc 2018 Science Vol.362 No.6418

Turning many into one

Single-crystal metal foils are valuable for their surface properties that allow for synthesis of materials like graphene. Jin et al. present a strategy for creating colossal single-crystal metal foils called “contact-free annealing” (see the Perspective by Rollett). The method relies on hanging and heating commercially available, inexpensive, cold-rolled metal foils. Almost as if by magic, the polycrystalline grains rotate and anneal into a large single-crystal sheet with a specific crystal orientation. The strategy allows for the creation of much larger and much cheaper single-crystal metal foils.

Science, this issue p. 1021; see also p. 996

Single-crystal metals have distinctive properties owing to the absence of grain boundaries and strong anisotropy. Commercial single-crystal metals are usually synthesized by bulk crystal growth or by deposition of thin films onto substrates, and they are expensive and small. We prepared extremely large single-crystal metal foils by “contact-free annealing” from commercial polycrystalline foils. The colossal grain growth (up to 32 square centimeters) is achieved by minimizing contact stresses, resulting in a preferred in-plane and out-of-plane crystal orientation, and is driven by surface energy minimization during the rotation of the crystal lattice followed by “consumption” of neighboring grains. Industrial-scale production of single-crystal metal foils is possible as a result of this discovery.

      • Diet Folate, DNA Methylation and Polymorphisms in Methylenetetrahydrofolate Reductase in Association with the Susceptibility to Gastric Cancer

Gao, Shang,Ding, Li-Hong,Wang, Jian-Wei,Li, Cun-Bao,Wang, Zhao-Yang Asian Pacific Journal of Cancer Prevention 2013 Asian Pacific journal of cancer prevention Vol.14 No.1

Methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase (MTHFR) has been reported to be associated with DNA methylation, an epigenetic feature frequently found in gastric cancer. We conducted a case-control study to explore the association of MTHFR C677T polymorphisms with gastric cancer risk and its relation with the DNA methylation of COX-2, MGMT, and hMLH1 genes. Genotyping of P16, MGMT and HMLH1 was determined by methylation-specific PCR after sodium bisulfate modification of DNA, and genotyping of MTHFR C677T was conducted by TaqMan assays using the ABI Prism 7911HT Sequence Detection System. Folate intake was calculated with the aid of a questionnaire. Compared with the MTHFR 677CC genotype, the TT genotype was significantly associated with 2.08 fold risk of gastric cancer when adjusting for potential risk factors. Individuals who had an intake of folate above $310{\mu}g$/day showed protective effects against gastric cancer risk. The effect of MTHFR C677T polymorphisms on the risk of gastric cancer was modified by folate intake and methylation status of MGMT (P for interaction <0.05).

Highly efficient removal of three red dyes by adsorption onto Mg–Al-layered double hydroxide

        Ran-ran Shan,Liang-guo Yan,Yan-ming Yang,Kun Yang,Shu-jun Yu,Hai-qin Yu,Bao-cun Zhu,Bin Du 한국공업화학회 2015 Journal of Industrial and Engineering Chemistry Vol.21 No.1

The Mg–Al-CO3-LDH with Mg2+/Al3+ molar ratio of 2 was prepared via coprecipitation method atconstant pH of 9–10 and used to remove three red dyes by batch adsorption method. The results showedthe Mg–Al-LDH were well crystallized and can adsorb the red dyes effectively. The optimal adsorbentdosage and contact time were 1.0 g and 60 min, respectively. Adsorbed amount hardly changed whenpH < 10. The adsorption kinetics fit the pseudo-second order kinetic models well and isothermscorrespond to Langmuir model strictly. All the relevant mechanisms were studied and manifested asanion exchange and also electrostatic attraction for CR.
