      • Association Between the GSTP1 Codon 105 Polymorphism and Gastric Cancer Risk: an Updated Meta-analysis

        Objective: The current meta-analysis was performed to address a more accurate estimation of the association between glutathione S-transferase P1 (GSTP1) codon 105 polymorphism and risk of gastric cancer (GC), which has been widely reported with conflicting results. Methods: A comprehensive literature search was conducted to identify all the relevant studies. Fixed or random effect models were selected based on the heterogeneity test. Publication bias was estimated using Begg's funnel plots and Egger's regression test. Results: A total of 20 studies containing 2,821 GC cases and 6,240 controls were finally included in the analyses. Overall, no significant association between GSTP1 polymorphism and GC risk was observed in worldwide populations. However, subgroup analysis stratified by ethnicity showed that GSTP1 polymorphism was significantly associated with increased risk of GC in Asians (G vs. A, OR = 1.273, 95%CI=1.011-1.605; GG vs. AA, OR=2.103, 95%CI=1.197-3.387; GG vs. AA+AG, OR =2.103, 95%CI=1.186-3.414). In contrast, no significant association was found in Caucasians in any genetic models, except for with AG vs. AA (OR=0.791, 95%CI=0.669-0.936). Furthermore, the GSTP1 polymorphism was found to be significantly associated with GC in patients with H. pylori infection and in those with a cardiac GC. Subgroup analysis stratified by Lauren's classification and smoking status showed no significant association with any genetic model. No studies were found to significantly influence the pooled effects in each genetic mode, and no potential publication bias was detected. Conclusion: This meta-analysis suggested that the GSTP1 polymorphism might be associated with increased risk of GC in Asians, while GSTP1 heterozygote genotype seemed to be associated with reduced risk of GC. Since potential confounders could not be ruled out completely, further studies are needed to confirm these results.

        Synergistic rheological behavior and morphology of yam starch and Auricularia auricula-judae polysaccharide-composite gels under processing conditions

        Polysaccharides from Auricularia auricula-judae (AP) have unique functionalities. The influence of APblending ratios (0.1–0.8%), temperature, pH, and ionic strength on the rheological interactions of yam starch (YS)–AP blends (YA, 6%) was investigated. YA gels showed shear-thinning behavior with flow-behavior indices of 0.28–0.37 and greater pseudoplasticity in the presence of 0.8% AP. With incremental AP addition, the viscosity and consistency indices significantly increased, whereas the activation energy decreased from 7.55 to 5.12 kJ/mol (p\0.05). YA gels exhibited excellent thickening and heat tolerance and behaved as weak gels over an AP concentration range of 0.1–0.4% but as true gels at higher concentrations (e.g. 0.8%). The viscosity/elasticity of the combinations weakened with NaCl addition or extreme pH values. A complex 3-dimensional network structure of the YA system was confirmed by scanning electron microscopy. These results indicated that AP has great potential for functional applications in the starchy food industry.

        Dynamic modeling and computer simulation analysis of the air spring suspension

        In improving the comfort of vehicles, air spring suspension has obvious advantages, but under the action of transient impact load, the damping effect of air spring suspension is not ideal due to the hysteresis phenomenon of air spring stiffness regulation. In order to analyze the mechanism of the above problems, the dynamic mathematical model and simulation model of air spring suspension are established. And the nonlinear characteristic of the elastic characteristics of the suspension is expounded theoretically. The simulation results show that the stiffness of the air spring increases with the increase of the transient impact load, and the peak value of the transfer function increases and moves to high frequency near the natural frequency of the body. And the peak value and the peak frequency of the transfer function only change slightly near the natural frequency of the wheel. There are bifurcations and secondary shocks at the wave crest of the acceleration curve under impact loads of 30 mm and 50 mm. The type of research can provide theoretical basis and reference for the design, analysis and optimization of air suspension.

        A Substation-Oriented Approach to Optimal Phasor Measurement Units Placement

        State Estimation (SE) is the basis of a variety of advanced applications used in most modern power systems. An SE problem formed with enough phasor measurement units (PMUs) data is simply a linear weighted least squares problem requiring no iterations. Thus, designing a minimum-cost placement of PMUs that guarantees observability of a power system becomes a worthy challenge. This paper proposes an equivalent integer linear programming method for substation-oriented optimal PMU placement (SOOPP). The proposed method uses an exhaustive search to determine a globally optimal solution representing the best PMU placement for that particular power system. To obtain a more comprehensive model, contingencies and the limitation of the number of PMU measurement channels are considered and embodied in the model as changes to the original constraints and as additional constraints. The proposed method is examined for applicability using the IEEE 14-bus, 118-bus and 300-bus test systems. The comparison between SOOPP results and results obtained by other methods reveals the excellence of SOOPP. Furthermore, practical large-scale power systems are also successfully analyzed using SOOPP.

        Rewritable Spiropyran/Polyacrylonitrile Hybrid Nanofiber Membrane Prepared by Electrospinning

        Photochromic materials aroused enormous interest due to their potential application for rewritable paper, smart labeling and sensor devices. In this paper, we proposed to dissolve spiropyran (SP, photochromic material) and polyacrylonitrile (PAN, polymer matrix) in dimethyl fumarate (DMF) to prepare photochromic nanofibers by electrospinning. The target SP compounds were featured by FTIR, ultraviolet (UV) and 1HNMR, and the nanofibers were characterized by FTIR, UV-vis spectra, scanning electron microscope (SEM), thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA) and contact angle (CA). The test results demonstrated that photochromic SP was synthesized successfully, and the nanofiber membrane possesses extraordinary color-converting properties including obvious color change from white to purple, reversible fast switching between two colors when exposed to UV light and achieve maximum color change in 1 min, and switchable hydrophilic and hydrophobic properties as well as excellent photo-fatigue resistance over 20 cycles. In addition, it has good thermal stability allowing it to be used under harsh conditions. In view of the above characteristics, we believe that the as-prepared nanofiber film will be a promising reusable writing substrate.

        Aristoyunnolin H attenuates extracellular matrix secretion in cardiac fibroblasts by inhibiting calcium influx

        Aristoyunnolin H is a novel aristophyllenesesquiterpenoid isolated from the traditional Chinese medicineAristolochia yunnanensis Franch. The presentresearch was designed to explore the anti-fibrotic effects ofaristoyunnolin H in adult rat cardiac fibroblasts (CFs)stimulated with angiotensin II (Ang II). Western blotanalysis data showed that aristoyunnolin H reduced theupregulation of fibronectin (FN), connective tissue growthfactor and collagen I(Col I) production induced by Ang II inCFs. By studying the dynamic intracellular changes ofCa2?, we further found that while aristoyunnolin H relievedthe calcium influx, it has no effect on intracellular calciumstore release. Meanwhile, aristoyunnolin H also inhibitedthe Ang II-stimulated phosphorylation of Ca2?/calmodulindependentprotein kinase II. In conclusion, aristoyunnolin Hmay attenuate extracellular matrix secretion in vitro byinhibiting Ang II-induced calcium signaling.

        Effects of Wind Generation Uncertainty and Volatility on Power System Small Signal Stability

        This paper discusses the impacts of large scale grid-connected wind farm equipped with permanent magnet synchronous generator (PMSG) on power system small signal stability (SSS) incorporating wind generation uncertainty and volatility. Firstly, a practical simplified PMSG model with rotor-flux-oriented control strategy applied is derived. In modeling PMSG generator side converter, the generator-voltage-oriented control strategy is utilized to implement the decoupled control of active and reactive power output. In modeling PMSG grid side converter, the grid-voltageoriented control strategy is applied to realize the control of DC link voltage and the reactive power regulation. Based on the Weibull distribution of wind speed, the Monte Carlo simulation technique based is carried out on the IEEE 16-generator-68-bus test system as benchmark to study the impacts of wind generation uncertainty and volatility on small signal stability. Finally, some preliminary conclusions and comments are given.

        Molecular characterization and functional analysis of a protease-related protein in Chang-Liver cells

        In this study, the cDNA library of Chang-liver cells was immunoscreened using common ADAMs antibody to obtain ADAM related genes. We found one positive clone that was confirmed as a new gene by Blast, which is an uncharacterized helical and coil protein and processes protease activity, and named protease-related protein 1 (ARP1). The submitted GenBank accession number is AY078070. Molecular characterizations of ARP1 were analyzed with appropriate bioinformatics software. To analyse its expression and function, ARP1 was subcloned into glutathione S-transferase fusion plasmid pGEX-2T and expressed by E. coli system. The in vitro expression product of ARP1 was recognized by common ADAMs antibody with western blot. Interestingly, ARP1 cleaves gelatine at pH9.5, which suggests it is an alkaline protease. Semi-quantitative RT-PCR result indicates that ARP1 mRNA is strongly transcribed in the liver and the treated Chang-liver cells. [BMB reports 2010; 43(5): 375-381]
