      • Behaviors of UHPC-filled Q960 high strength steel tubes under lowtemperature compression

        This paper firstly proposed high performance composite columns for cold-region infrastructures using ultra-high performance concrete (UHPC) and ultra-high strength steel (UHSS) Q960E. Then, 24 square UHPC-filled UHSS tubes (UHSTCs) at low temperatures of -80, -60, -30, and 30℃ were performed under axial loads. The key influencing parameters on axial compression performance of UHSS were studied, i.e., temperature level and UHSS-tube wall thickness (t). In addition, mechanical properties of Q960E at low temperatures were also studied. Test results revealed low temperatures improved the yield/ultimate strength of Q960E. Axial compression tests on UHSTCs revealed that the dropping environmental temperature increased the compression strength and stiffness, but compromised the ductility of UHSTCs; increasing t significantly increased the strength, stiffness, and ductility of UHSTCs. This study developed numerical and theoretical models to reproduce axial compression performances of UHSTCs at low temperatures. Validations against 24 tests proved that both two methods provided reasonable simulations on axial compression performance of UHSTCs. Finally, simplified theoretical models (STMs) and modified prediction equations in AISC 360, ACI 318, and Eurocode 4 were developed to estimate the axial load capacity of UHSTCs at low temperatures.

        Gestalt 시지각 법칙을 통해 분석한 모바일 UI디자인 연구 -삼성·애플 모바일 폰을 중심으로-

        본 연구의 목적은 게슈탈트 관점에서 모바일 UI디자인의 객관적 평가 기준을 마련하고, 게슈탈트 시지각심리 법칙을 활용하여 실제 사용되는 대표적인 모바일 UI디자인 간의 유사성과 특징을 분석하고 평가하는 데 있다. 만약, 제품 제작 전에 시지각과 관련된 인간 심리를 충분히 반영하여 제품을 설계해 나간다면 UI디자인 개발에 많은 도움을 줄 것으로 사료된다. 본 연구의 범위는 대표적인 모바일 기업인 삼성의 ONE와 애플의 iOS 모바일 UI디자인 및 게슈탈트 시지각 구성요소로 한정하였다. 주요한 연구내용은 다음과 같다. 대표적인 시지각 심리학 이론인 게슈탈트 법칙과 시각디자인의 기본요소를 접목하여 평가지표를 작성하였다. 구체적으로는 ‘아이콘’, ‘메인화면’, ‘멀티태스킹’, ‘퀵패널’ 네 부분으로 분류하고, 대표적 게슈탈트 법칙인 ‘대칭성’, ‘연속성’, ‘완결성’, ‘근접성’, ‘유사성’ 다섯 가지의 원칙에 적용하여 그 특징을 살피고 UI디자인의 원칙인 ‘직관성’, ‘일관성’, ‘효율성’과 접목하여 분석을 구체화하였다. 연구 결과 모바일 UI디자인에 있어서 게슈탈트 법칙에 기반한 시지각적 특성을 활용하여 디자인 할 때, 사용자가 정보에 대한 이해와 기능에 대한 접근효율을 높일 수 있다는 사실을 발견하였다. UI디자인은 디자이너의 시각에서가 아니라 이용자가 바라보는 시각에서 설계되어야 한다. 그러한 관점에서 대표적인 두 기업의 모바일 UI디자인은 게슈탈트 법칙들이 잘 활용되어 있음을 확인할 수 있었다. The purpose of this research is to establish objective evaluation criteria for mobile UI design from the Gestalt point of view and analyze and evaluate similarities and characteristics between representative mobile UI designs used in practice by utilizing Gestalt visual perception psychology law. If the product is designed to fully reflect the human psychology related to visual perception before the production of the product, it is expected to help the development of UI design. The scope of this study was limited to the components of the visual perception of Samsung’s ONE and Apple’s iOS Mobile UI Design and Gestalt, both of which are representative mobile companies. The main research points are as follows. Assessment indicators were drawn up by combining the basic elements of visual design with the law of Gestalt, a representative theory of visual perception psychology. Specifically, it categorized Icon, Main Screen, Multitasking, Quick Panel, and applied the five main principles of Gestalt: ‘Detention’, ‘Perfect’, ‘Close’, and ‘Similarity’ to examine the characteristics and applied the detailed analysis of the principles of UI design, ‘intuitive’, ‘uniformity’, and ‘efficiency’. Research has found that users can increase their understanding of information and access to functions when designing using visual perceptual characteristics based on the law of Gestalt in mobile UI design. UI design should be designed from the perspective of the user, not from the perspective of the designer. From that point of view, the two flagship companies’ Mobile UI design was able to confirm that the laws of Gestalt were well utilized.

        Compound K Suppresses Ultraviolet Radiation-induced Apoptosis by Inducing DNA Repair in Human Keratinocytes

        Ultraviolet (UV)-induced DNA damage is a crucial molecular trigger for sunburn cell formation and skin cancer. Nucleotide excision repair (NER) is the main mechanism in repairing UVB-induced DNA damage of mammalian cells. The purpose of this study is to investigate the functional role of ginsenoside compound K on HaCaT cells (a keratinocyte-derived permanent cell line) irradiated by UV. Hoechst 33258 staining were performed in analyzing UV-induced apoptosis on keratinocytes which were treated with compound K. ImmunoDotBlot assay was used in detecting cyclobutane pyrimidine dimers, the main DNA damage. Western blot analysis was applied for analyzing XPC and ERCC1, two of the NER proteins. Compound K inhibited UV-induced apoptosis of keratinocytes and caused a notable reduction in UV-specific DNA lesions which was due to induction of DNA repair. In agreement with this, compound K induced the expression of particular components of the NER complex, such as XPC and ERCC1. Our results demonstrate that compound K can protect cells from apoptosis induced by UV radiation by inducing DNA repair.

      • Roles of microRNA-206 in Osteosarcoma Pathogenesis and Progression

        Backgroud and Aims: MicroRNA-206 has proven to be down-regulated in many human malignancies in correlation with tumour progression. Our study aimed to characterize miR-206 contributions to initiation and malignant progression of human osteosarcoma. Methods: MiR-206 expression was detected in human osteosarcoma cell 1ine MG63, human normal osteoblastic cell line hFOB 1.19, and paired osteosarcoma and normal adjacent tissues from 65 patients using quantitative RT-PCR. Relationships of miR-206 levels to clinicopathological characteristics were also investigated. Moreover, miR-206 mimics and negative control siRNA were transfected into MG63 cells to observe effects on cell viability, apoptosis, invasion and migration. Results: We found that miR-206 was down-regulated in the osteosarcoma cell line MG63 and primary tumor samples, and decreased miR-206 expression was significantly associated with advanced clinical stage, T classification, metastasis and poor histological differentiation. Additionally, transfection of miR-206 mimics could reduce MG-63 cell viability, promote cell apoptosis, and inhibit cell invasion and migration. Conclusions: These findings indicate that miR-206 may have a key role in osteosarcoma pathogenesis and development. It could serve as a useful biomarker for prediction of osteosarcoma progression, and provide a potential target for gene therapy.

      • A Novel Mannose-binding Tuber Lectin from Typhonium divaricatum (L.) Decne (family Araceae) with Antiviral Activity Against HSV-II and Anti-proliferative Effect on Human Cancer Cell Lines

        A novel mannose-binding tuber lectin with in vitro antiproliferative activity towards human cancer cell lines and antiviral activity against HSV-II was isolated from fresh tubers of a traditional Chinese medicinal herb, Typhonium divaricatum (L.) Decne by a combined procedure involving extraction, ammonium sulfate precipitation, ion exchange chromatography on DEAE-SEPHAROSE, CM-SEPHAROSE and gel-filtration on sephacryl S-200. The apparent molecular mass of the purified Typhonium divaricatum lectin (TDL) was 48 kDa. TDL exhibits hemagglutinating activity toward rabbit erythrocytes at 0.95 $\mu$g/ml, and its activity could be strongly inhibited by mannan, ovomucoid, asialofetuin and thyroglobulin. TDL showed antiproliferative activity towards some well established human cancer cell lines, e.g. Pro-01 (56.7 $\pm$ 6.8), Bre-04 (41.5 $\pm$ 4.8), and Lu-04 (11.4 $\pm$ 0.3). The anti-HSV-II activity of TDL was elucidated by testing its HSV-II infection inhibitory activity in Vero cells with $TC_50$ and $EC_50$ of 5.176 mg/ml and 3.054 $\mu$g/ml respectively. The full-length cDNA sequence of TDL was 1145 bp and contained an 813-bp open reading frame (ORF) encoding a 271 amino acid precursor of 29-kDa. Homology analysis showed that TDL had high homology with many other mannose-binding lectins. Secondary and three-dimensional structures analyses showed that TDL is heterotetramer and similar with lectins from mannose-binding lectin superfamily, especially those from family Araceae.

      • Role of Graphene in Water-Assisted Oxidation of Copper in Relation to Dry Transfer of Graphene

        <P>The process of oxidation of a copper surface coated by a layer of graphene in water-saturated air at 50 degrees C was studied where it was observed that oxidation started at the graphene edge and was complete after 24 h. Isotope labeling of the oxygen gas and water showed that the oxygen in the formed copper oxides originated from water and not from the oxygen in air for both Cu and graphene-coated Cu, and this has interesting potential implications for graphene as a protective coating for Cu in dry air conditions. We propose a reaction pathway where surface hydroxyl groups formed at graphene edges and defects induce the oxidation of Cu. DFT simulation shows that the binding energy between graphene and the oxidized Cu substrate is smaller than that for the bare Cu substrate, which facilitates delamination of the graphene. Using this process, dry transfer is demonstrated using poly(bisphenol A carbonate) (PC) as the support layer. The high quality of the transferred graphene is demonstrated from Raman maps, XPS, STM, TEM, and sheet resistance measurements. The copper foil substrate was reused without substantial weight loss to grow graphene (up to 3 cycles) of equal quality to the first growth after each cycle. It was found that dry transfer yielded graphene with less Cu impurities as compared to methods using etching of the Cu substrate. Using PC yielded graphene with less polymeric residue after transfer than the use of poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) as the supporting layer. Hence, this dry and clean delamination technique for CVD graphene grown on copper substrates is highly advantageous for the cost-effective large-scale production of graphene, where the Cu substrate can be reused after each growth.</P>

        Design and Optimization for Distributed Compress-and-Forward System based on Multi-Relay Network

        A novel distributed compress-and-forward (CF) system based on multi-relay network is presented. In this system, as the direct link between the source and destination is invalid due to some reasons, such as the limited power, special working environment, or even economic factors, relays are employed to receive analog signals and carry on distributed compressed encoding. Subsequently, the digital signals are transmitted to the destination via wireless channel. Moreover, a theoretical analysis for the system is provided by utilizing the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) theory and Shannon channel capacity theory, and the rate-distortion function as well as the connection between the transmission rate and the channel capacity are constructed. In addition, an optimal signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) -based power allocation method is proposed to maximize the quantization SNR under the limited total power. Simulation result shows that the proposed CF system outperforms the amplify-and-forward (AF) system versus the SNR performance.

      • Tensile behavior of stainless steel S30408 at the Arctic low temperature

        This paper investigated tensile behaviours of S30408 at the Arctic low temperatures (T) of -80~20℃. A cooling chamber equipped with liquid nitrogen gas was adopted to rebuild the Arctic low-temperature environment. Standard tension tests were performed on 48 coupons with different thickness at different T values of -80, -60, -30, and 20℃. Test results revealed the ductile failure mode of stainless steel S30408 even at -80℃. The tensile stress-strain (σ-ε) curves of S30408 at ambient temperatures exhibited a long strain hardening plateau. Meanwhile, the low-temperature tensile σ-ε curves of S30408 were different from those at ambient temperatures, which exhibited a second hardening stage with a larger slope than the first hardening. The decreasing T generally increased the elastic modulus, yield and ultimate strength, but reduced the ductility of S30408. Decreasing the T from 20 to -80℃ reduced the ductility of S30408 by about 28%, but improved the elastic modulus, yield and ultimate strength by about 20%, 22%, and 75%, respectively. This paper also adopted the best subset regression analysis method to develop empirical formulae on estimating influences of T on mechanical properties of S30408. Validations of the predictions by these empirical formulae against the test results in the literature proved their accuracies.

        Application of the Global Stability Index Method to Predict the Quality Deterioration of Blunt-snout Bream (Megalobrama amblycephala) during Chilled Storage

        To study the quality changes of blunt-snout bream (Megalobrama amblycephala) stored at chilled temperature (0-9oC), a global stability index (GSI) method was developed. Sensory score, total aerobic counts (TAC),total volatile basic nitrogen (TVB-N), and K value (as a percentage of the ratio between HxR (hypoxanthine riboside)+Hx (hypoxanthine) to the total ATP (adenosine triphosphate) and its degradation products) were determined to form a GSI value, and a predictive model of GSI was established by combining zero order kinetics with the Arrhenius equation. The results showed that the goodness of fit remained a high level (R2>0.97), the activation energy (EA) and the corresponding pre-exponential factor (k0) were 83.49 kJ/mol and 4.78×1014 respectively. Relative errors between experimental GSI values and predicted GSI values were all within ±15% before the 15th day. Therefore,the model could effectively predict the quality deterioration of blunt-snout bream during chilled storage.
