Vol.38 No.2

Structural sites which cations can occupy in garnet structure are centers of the tetrahedron, octahedron, and distorted cube sharing edges with the tetrahedron and octahedron. Among them, the size of cation occuping at tetrahedral site (the center of tetrahedron) is closely related with the size of a unit cell of garnet. Accordingly, garnet containing iron with relative large ionic radii in tetrahedral site can be considered as a promising matrix for the immobilization of the elements with large ionic radii, such as actinides in radioactive wastes. We synthesized several garnets with the batch composition of Ca 1.5 GdCe 0.5 ZrFeFe 3 O 12 , and studied their properties and phase relations under various conditions. Mixed samples were fabricated in a pellet form under a pressure of 200~400 kg/cm 2 and were sintered in the temperature range of 1100~1400 o C in air and under oxygen atmospheres. Phase identification and chemical analysis of synthesized samples were conducted by XRD and SEM/EDS. In results, garnet was obtained as the main phase at 1300 o C, an optimum condition in this system, even though some minor phases like perovskite and unknown phase were included. The compositions of garnet and perovskite synthesized from the batch composition of Ca 1.5 GdCe 0.5 ZrFeFe 3 O 12 were ranged [Ca 1.2-1.8 Gd 0.9-1.4 Ce 0.3-0.5 ] VIII [Zr 0.8-1.3 Fe 0.7-1.2 ] VI [Fe 2.9-3.1 ] IV O 12 and Ca 0.1-0.5 Gd 0.0-0.8 Ce 0.1-0.5 Zr 0.0-0.2 Fe 0.9-1.1 O 3 , respectively. Ca content was exceeded and Ce content was depleted in the 8-coordinated site, comparing to the initial batch composition. This phenomena was closely related to the content of Zr and Fe in the 6-coordinated site.

Growth Inhibition of Colon Cancer through Inactivation of STAT3 Pathway by IL-10 and IL-1ra Released from Murine Macrophage

Jin Tae Hong, Dohee Won1, Mi Hee Park, Sun Mi Kown, Miran Jo, Sang-Yoon Nam, Beom Jun Lee, Young Won Yun, Ki-Wan Oh, Sang Bae Han 충북대학교 동물의학연구소 2011 Journal of Biomedical and Translational Research Vol.12 No.4

The objective of this study was to determine the effect of macrophages on growth of human colon cancer cells. The results showed that co-culture of colon cancer cells with macrophages inhibited the growth of colon cancer cells (HCT116 and SW620) depending on the number of macrophages, RAW 264.7 cells, and activated THP-1 cells accompanied by down regulation of pSTAT3 in cancer cells. We also found that expression and release of cancer cell growth inhibitory cytokines, IL-1 receptor antagonist (IL-1ra) and IL-10, was increased in macrophages. Blocking of the STAT3 pathway with specific inhibitor and siRNA of STAT3 abolished the growth of colon cancer cells and expression of IL-1ra and IL-10. In addition, neutralization of IL-1ra and IL-10 with antibodies resulted in reversal of macrophage-induced inhibition of cancer cell growth. These data showed that IL-1ra and IL-10 released from macrophages inhibit growth of colon cancer cells through inhibition of the STAT3 pathway

        유한모,김태원,배자성1<,SUP>,조항주,김기환,안창혁,박우찬2<,SUP>,이동호3<,SUP>,김정수,Han Mo Yoo,M,D,Tae Won Kim,M,D,Ja Sung Bae,M,D,1<,SUP>,Hang Joo Cho,M,D,Kee Hwan Kim,M,D,Chang Hyuk An,M,D,Woo Chan Park,M 대한갑상선-내분비외과학회 2009 The Koreran journal of Endocrine Surgery Vol.9 No.4

Purpose: The aim of this study was to evaluate and compare the surgical outcomes of endoscopic total and near-total thyroidectomies in patients with thyroid cancer. Methods: Between February 2000 and January 2009, among 387 patients who underwent endoscopic thyroidectomy in our hospital, we evaluated 50 patients who underwent endoscopic total or near-total thyroidectomy. Thirty- five and 15 patients underwent endoscopic total thyroidectomy and near-total thyroidectomy, respectively. We analyzed the patients' clinicopathologic characteristics and post-operative complications between the two groups. Results: The mean size of tumors was 1.08 cm (range, 0.1∼3.5 cm) and the mean operative time was 192 minutes. Forty-nine tumors were papillary cancers and 1 tumor was a follicular cancer. Two patients in the endoscopic total thyroidectomy group underwent re-operation because of bleeding. In the near-total thyroidectomy group, one patient had transient hypocalcemia and one patient had temporary recurrent laryngeal nerve palsy. In the total thyroidectomy group, nine patients had transient hypocalcemia and one patient had temporary recurrent laryngeal nerve palsy. There was no statistical difference in the post-operative complicationrates between the two groups (P=0.254 for hypocalcemia and P=0.470 for injury to the recurrent laryngeal nerve). Conclusion: Based on our experience, endoscopic total thyroidectomy is a safe and feasible alternative to endoscopic near-total thyroidectomy. (Korean J Endocrine Surg 2009; 9:201-205)

Development of a Reduction Algorithm of GEO Satellite Optical Observation Data for Optical Wide Field Patrol (OWL)

        Sun-youp Park,Jin Choi1,Jung Hyun Jo,Ju Young Son,Yung-Sik Park,Hong-Suh Yim,Hong-Suh Yim,Hong-Kyu Moon,Young-Ho Bae,Jang-Hyun Park 한국우주과학회 2015 Journal of Astronomy and Space Sciences Vol.32 No.3

An algorithm to automatically extract coordinate and time information from optical observation data of geostationary orbit satellites (GEO satellites) or geosynchronous orbit satellites (GOS satellites) is developed. The optical wide-field patrol system is capable of automatic observation using a pre-arranged schedule. Therefore, if this type of automatic analysis algorithm is available, daily unmanned monitoring of GEO satellites can be possible. For data acquisition for development, the COMS1 satellite was observed with 1-s exposure time and 1-m interval. The images were grouped and processed in terms of “action”, and each action was composed of six or nine successive images. First, a reference image with the best quality in one action was selected. Next, the rest of the images in the action were geometrically transformed to fit in the horizontal coordinate system (expressed in azimuthal angle and elevation) of the reference image. Then, these images were median-combined to retain only the possible non-moving GEO candidates. By reverting the coordinate transformation of the positions of these GEO satellite candidates, the final coordinates could be calculated.

      • Ethnography on Cancer Patient’s Anger

        Sun-Hee Bae1,Young-Sun Park 보안공학연구지원센터 2016 International Journal of Bio-Science and Bio-Techn Vol.8 No.5

The present ethnographic study explores the implications of anger in cancer patients in the cultural context of Korea from the perspective of cancer patients, and conducts a cross-cultural investigation to propose a theoretical model that can explain their anger, to develop effective nursing interventions and ultimately to improve cancer patients‟ quality of life. The informants in this study are 9 cancer patients on chemotherapy (6 females and 3 males) who were born and have lived in Korea sharing the Korean culture. Data were collected from January to September, 2008 until the data were saturated. Participant observation and in-depth interviews were used to collect data, which were in turn analyzed with Spradley‟s taxonomic analysis [6]. Taken together, the main cultural themes proved here are the 「insurmountable fate」,「uncontrolled psychological conflicts」, 「treatment processes to be endured」,「unpredictable future」, and 「uncontrolled self-pity」. The theoretical model of cancer patients‟ anger proved the archetype of a thinking cycle in the course of the disease where patients struggle to overcome and break from the cultural themes only to feel outraged about the insurmountable fate and undeniable reality that cannot be addressed even with face saving. In short, a socio-cultural sentiment should be encouraged so that cancer patients can break from the insurmountable fate, accept the course of the disease and receive treatment in a positive manner while expressing the anger effectively in Korean culture where cancer patients‟ anger tends to ebb away inwards and turn into „resentment‟. Also, it is urgent to develop self-help groups where cancer patients can cope with the anger in proper ways.

      • RE-17 : Recurrence of ovarian endometrioma in adolescents after conservative surgical treatment

( Yeon Jean Cho ),( Soo Yoon Lee ),( Mi La Kim ),( Joo Myoung Kim ),( Seok Joo Song ),( Jong Woon Bae ),( Jung Woo Park1,),( Hee Suk Lee ),( Myoung Seok Han1 ) 대한산부인과학회 2014 대한산부인과학회 학술대회 Vol.100 No.-

목적: To evaluate the cumulative recurrence rate of endometriomas after a laparoscopic endometriotic cyst enucleation in adolescents and to find the factors associated with recurrence. 방법: A multicenter retrospective cohort study was performed at 3 gynecologic surgery centers between January 2000 and December 2010. Patients surgically treated by laparoscopic enucleation of endometriotic cysts younger than 20 years old were selected. We excluded patients who had reproductive tract anomalies. Endometrioma recurrence was considered when transvaginal or transrectal sonography indicated a cystic mass with a diameter of ≥ 20 mm. 결과: In total, 105 patients were followed up for 47.3 ± 44.3 months (range, 3 - 161 months). Seventeen patients (16.2 %) experienced recurrence after the first-line surgery and 8 patients (7.6 %) underwent a second surgery. The median time to recurrence was 51.1 ± 9.1 months (SEM) (range, 8 - 111 months). The cumulative recurrence rates of endometrioma per patient at 24, 36, 60 and 96 months after the first-line surgery were 6.4 %, 10 %, 19.9 % and 30.9 %, respectively. Surgical characteristics such as the diameter of the cyst, rAFS stage, unilateral or bilateral involvement, co-existence of deep endometriosis were not associated with the recurrence in this age group. 결론: The short-term recurrence rate in adolescent after the first-line surgery is relatively low but is appears to be higher according to the follow- up duration. Long-term and strict follow up is needed who have undergone surgical treatment for endometriosis in adolescent period.

        Cytokine and Tumor Environments

Jin Tae Hong1*, Ju Kyung Song, Sun Mi Kwon, Byung Woo Ahn, Youngsoo Kim, Sang Bae Han 충북대학교 동물의학연구소 2012 Journal of Biomedical and Translational Research Vol.13 No.1

Cytokines are known to function as regulatory molecules that can be produced by virtually every nucleated cell type in the body, including lymphocytes, monocytes/macrophages, epithelial cells, fibroblasts, and many others. Cytokines include lymphocyte-derived factors (lymphokines), monocyte-derived factors (monokines), hematopoietic factors (colony-stimulating factors), connective tissue/growth factors, and chemotactic chemokines. Cytokines released in response to infection can affect tumor development in different ways. When exposed to infectious agents, cytokines are secreted by sentinel cells, such as macrophages and dendritic cells. These cytokines include interleukin 1 (IL-1) and tumor necrosis factor-α, as well as others, such as IL-6, IL-12, and IL-18. When released in sufficient quantities, these molecules can cause inflammation. Chronic inflammation is highly associated with tumor initiation, promotion, and progression. In this article, we review the roles and mechanisms of cytokines in tumor development.

Cytoreductive surgery with hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy in management of peritoneal carcinomatosis: Single center experience in Korea

2019 Korean Journal of Clinical Oncology Vol.15 No.2

Purpose: Peritoneal carcinomatosis (PC) has been considered a terminal condition and cytoreductive surgery with hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (CRS/HIEPC) is regarded as an alternative therapeutic option. This study aimed to evaluate the 30-day clinical outcomes of CRS/HIPEC and the feasibility of the surgery by investigating the morbidity and mortality in Inje University Hospital. Methods: Data were retrospectively collected from 19 patients with PC who underwent CRS/HIPEC at Inje University Hospital in 2018. We evaluated pre-, intra-operative parameters and postoperative clinical outcomes and early complications. Results: The mean operating time was 506.95 minutes and the mean blood loss was 837.11 mL. Six cases (31.58%) had morbidity of grade III or above. A longer operating time (≥560 minutes, P=0.038) and large blood loss (≥700 mL, P=0.060) were positively correlated with grade III or worse postoperative complications. Conclusion: Our early experience with CRS/HIPEC resulted in a 31.58% morbidity rate of grade III and above, with risk factors being longer operating time and greater intraoperative blood loss. As the surgical team’s skills improve, a shorter operating time with less intraoperative blood loss could result in better short-term outcomes of CRS/HIPEC.
