Zainichi Koreans and the Jeju 4.3 Incident: Focusing on Soup and Ideology
Aya Narikawa 건국대학교 아시아·디아스포라 연구소 2022 International Journal of Diaspora&Cultural Critici Vol.12 No.1
Director Yang Yong-hee, a Zainichi Korean who has portrayed the relationship between her family and North Korea in films such as Dear Pyongyang (2005) and Our Homeland (2012), released a new 2021 documentary, Soup and Ideology, regarding her mother and the Jeju 4.3 incident. The novels of Kim Sok-pom, who too is a Zainichi Korean, including “The Death of the Crow” and “Volcano Island,” were what publicised the Jeju 4.3 incident in Japan. Although Kim Sok-pom himself was born in Osaka and did not directly experience the incident, he said he was shocked by the stories he heard from stowaways from Jeju Island, which inspired him to write the novels. It is only in recent years that Yang Yong-hee’s mother has spoken about her experience of it. The films Pacchigi! LOVE & PEACE (2007) and Barbecue Dragon (2018) also portray or refer to the Jeju 4.3 incident. Both films have a Zainichi Korean director or producer, who have incorporated their own father’s story into the film. Focusing on Yang Yong-hee’s Soup and Ideology, which narrates her mother’s story, I would like to examine what the Zainichi Korean directors and producers have tried to convey by using the incident as the basis of their films.

Background: Extracorporeal blood-purification techniques are frequently needed in the pediatric intensive care unit (PICU), yet data on their clinical application are lacking. This study aims to review the indications, rate of application, clinical characteristics, complications, and outcomes of patients undergoing extracorporeal blood purification (i.e., by continuous renal replacement therapy [CRRT] or therapeutic plasma exchange [TPE]) in our PICU, including before the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic in 2019 and during the pandemic from 2020–2022. Methods: This study included children admitted for extracorporeal blood-purification therapy in the PICU. The indications for TPE were analyzed and compared to the American Society for Apheresis categories. Results: In 82 children, 380 TPE sessions and 37 CRRT sessions were carried out children, with 65 patients (79%) receiving TPE, 17 (20.7%) receiving CRRT, and four (4.8%) receiving both therapies. The most common indications for TPE were neurological diseases (39/82, 47.5%), followed by hematological diseases (18/82, 21.9%). CRRT was mainly performed for patients suffering from acute kidney injury. Patients with neurological diseases received the greatest number of TPE sessions (295, 77.6%). Also, the year 2022 contained the greatest number of patients receiving extracorporeal blood-purification therapy (either CRRT or TPE).Conclusions: The use of extracorporeal blood-purification techniques increased from 2019 through 2022 due to mainly autoimmune dysregulation among affected patients. TPE can be safely used in an experienced PICU. No serious adverse events were observed in the patients that received TPE, and overall survival over the 4 years was 86.5%.

In this study, solvent casting technique was employed in fabricating ocular inserts using Pullulan as a natural film forming agent and Hydroxy propyl methyl cellulose as a synthetic film forming agent. Ciprofloxacin hydrochloride—an effective ocular antibiotic- was employed as a model drug in this study. Further modification of ciprofloxacin release from the ocuserts is obtained via coating the dual sides of the ocuserts by hydroxy ethyl cellulose as release controlling membrane. The prepared ocuserts were evaluated for various physiochemical parameters, and the in-vitro release pattern. Furthermore, accelerated stability test, sterility test, microbiological studies as well as eye irritancy test were appraised for a selected formula. All the developed ocular inserts showed that as the rate controlling membrane increased in percentage, the thickness and weight of sealed ocuserts increased. The drug content varied between 85.4 ± 16.5–98.2 ± 27.4% and the drug release followed zero-order pattern. The selected formula showed the highest sustainment effect indicated by the least release rate (16.3%/h) containing pullulan (2.0%) and dual coat of hydroxy ethyl cellulose (6.0%). Pullulan based ocular insert remained stable and intact at accelerated conditions for 30 days with overall degradation of the drug less than 2.5%. Non-irritant response in rabbits with primary irritation indices score 0 on Peyman Scale and excellent microbiological activity represented by a greater zone of inhibition (5.6 cm) compared to an ocuserts with no drug (0.8 cm) against Staphylococcus aureus. This study showed the suitability of dual sided coated Pullulan ocusert in attaining the desired sustainment effect with excellent stability.
Surface pressure measurements in translating tornado-like vortices
Aya Kassab,Chowdhury Jubayer,Arash Ashrafi,Horia Hangan 한국풍공학회 2021 Wind and Structures, An International Journal (WAS Vol.33 No.6
High spatial and temporal surface pressure measurements were carried out in the state-of-the-art tornado simulator, the Wind Engineering, Energy and Environment (WindEEE) Dome, to explore the characteristics of stationary and translating tornado-like vortices (TLV) for a wide range of swirl ratios (S=0.21 to 1.03). The translational speed of the TLV and the surface roughness were varied to examine their effects on tornado ground pressures, wandering, and vortex structure. It was found that wandering is more pronounced at low swirl ratios and has a substantial effect on the peak pressure magnitude for stationary TLV (error percentage ≤ 35%). A new method for removing wandering was proposed which is applicable for a wide range of swirl ratios. For translating TLV, the near-surface part lagged behind the top of the vortex, resulting in a tilt of the tornado vertical axis at higher translating speeds. Also, a veering motion of the tornado base towards the left of the direction of the translation was observed. Wandering was less pronounced for higher translation speeds. Increasing the surface roughness caused an analogous effect as lowering the swirl ratio.
