This is a summary of results involving the development of a theory of an index of an isolated critical point for densely defined nonlinear operators of type (S(sub)+)(sub)0,L. This index theory is associated with a degree theory, for such operators, whch has been recently developed by the authors.
m-Phenylene-Linked Bis-(Biradicals). Generation, Characterization and Computational Studies
Nicolaides, Athanassios,Tomioka, Hideo Korean Society of Photoscience 2003 Journal of Photosciences Vol.10 No.1
m-Phenylene-linked biscarbenes, bisnitrenes and carbenonitrenes can be formed photochemically from appropriate nitrogenous precursors. Generation of such reactive intermediates under matrix-isolation conditions allows for their characterization by spectroscopic techniques such as ESR, UV /vis and IR. The latter method is also useful in characterizing secondary products derived from these reactive intermediates. Computational chemistry methods complement experimental IR data, aiding, thus, in identification of such compounds. In addition electronic structure calculations help in developing qualitative and semi-quantitative models, which can be useful in predicting ground-state multiplicities. The parent systems of m-phenylene-linked carbenes and nitrenes have high-spin ground states, but a switching to lower multiplicity can be achieved by chemical substitution. The ground state and various low-lying excited states of m-phenylenecarbenonitrenes can be reasonably approximated by simple valence-bond depictions. Finally, m-phenylenecarbenonitrenes are photoreactive in the inert matrix isomerizing to cyclopropene derivatives.

<P>Conventional protein kinase C (PKC) isoforms are essential serine/threonine kinases regulating many signaling networks. At cell adhesion sites, PKCα can impact the actin cytoskeleton through its influence on RhoGTPases, but the intermediate steps are not well known. One important regulator of RhoGTPase function is the multifunctional guanine nucleotide dissociation inhibitor RhoGDIα that sequesters several related RhoGTPases in an inactive form, but it may also target them through interactions with actin-associated proteins. Here, it is demonstrated that conventional PKC phosphorylates RhoGDIα on serine 34, resulting in a specific decrease in affinity for RhoA but not Rac1 or Cdc42. The mechanism of RhoGDIα phosphorylation is distinct, requiring the kinase and phosphatidylinositol 4,5-bisphosphate, consistent with recent evidence that the inositide can activate, localize, and orient PKCα in membranes. Phosphospecific antibodies reveal endogenous phosphorylation in several cell types that is sensitive to adhesion events triggered, for example, by hepatocyte growth factor. Phosphorylation is also sensitive to PKC inhibition. Together with fluorescence resonance energy transfer microscopy sensing GTP-RhoA levels, the data reveal a common pathway in cell adhesion linking two essential mediators, conventional PKC and RhoA.</P>

cis-$[Ru(bpy)_2(L^n)]Cl_2$ (n = 1, $L^1$ = 4-carboxy-2-(2'-pyridyl)quinoline (2); n = 2, $L^2$ = 2,2'-pyridine-4,4'-dicarboxylic acid (4)); and cis-$[Ru(bpy)_2(L')_2)]Cl_2$ (L' = 4-pyridinecarboxylic acid (6)) complexes, with surface anchoring groups, are prepared from the reaction of cis-[$Ru(bpy)_2Cl_2$] (1) with the appropriate ligand ($L^1$, $L^2$, L'). Ion exchange in aqueous solution with $NH_4PF_6$ gives the corresponding bis(hexafluorophosphate) derivatives cis-$[Ru(bpy)_2(L^1)](PF_6)_2$ (3), cis-$[Ru(bpy)_2(L^2)](PF_6)_2$ (5) and cis-$[Ru(bpy)_2(L')_2](PF_6)_2$ (7), respectively. The photo-electrochemical properties of the dyes (2-7) are investigated and the efficiency of the corresponding dye sensitized solar cells is compared to a N719 sensitized device, under similar fabrication and testing conditions.
Field Measurements of Wave Directionality in Water of Finite Depth
Constantine Memos,Athanassios Ziros 한국해양과학기술원 2003 Ocean and Polar Research Vol.25 No.3s
Field measurements of directional waves were carried out during the summer of 2002 at two coastal sites in water of finite depth. A couple of general purpose instruments were used employing acoustic Doppler technology. The aim of the study was to investigate the spatial behavior of the directional movement of waves as they come ashore. In total, 74 tests were carried out during which sea states of low to moderate intensity were recorded. A great number of these runs displayed bimodal characteristics of the spreading function at high frequencies. It was found that in general, the frequency-integrated directional width tends to broaden as the water shoals and when refraction effects are negligible. This is attributed to wave-wave interactions that become pronounced in shallow water. The same directional width showed, also, a tendency to increase with increasing peak frequency of the sea state spectrum. The behavior of the kurtosis of the spreading function was also examined. It was found that for higher frequencies this index tends to increase in wave spectra above a certain sea severity threshold.

This research aimed to study the influence of crop year and cultivar on the composition of phytochemicals and carbohydrates of pecan (Carya illinoinensis) kernels. Three pecan cultivars, Mahan, Moore and Burkett, grown at the same location, were analyzed for their total phenols, total flavonoids, total flavanols, total condensed tannin, total o-diphenols, HPLC phenolic profile, antioxidant activity, and carbohydrate composition over two harvest years. Five individual phenolic compounds were identified and quantified in pecan kernels: gallic acid, catechin, epicatechin, an ellagic acid derivative and ellagic acid. Mahan exhibited the highest content of total phenolics, flavonoids, flavanols and condensed tannins, as well as the highest antioxidant activity among the cultivars. Significant positive correlations were found between antioxidant activity and the concentration of phenolic compound in the kernels. Based on principal component analysis performed using all the measured variables, Mahan and Burkett cultivars were clearly distinguished, while Moore presented similar characteristics to both of them. The present findings showed that phytochemicals and carbohydrates varied significantly among the cultivars and harvest years. As there is little information on the phytochemical profile of pecan nuts, the information provided here will be valuable for a better understanding of their potential contribution to health promotion and disease prevention.

Wild-type p53 is involved in several aspects of cell cycle control and suppression of transformation. inducing either apoptosis or G block in cell cycle progression. Using a recombinant adenovirus containting the wild-type p53 cDNA, the biological effects of the newly expressed wild-type p53 protein were examined in six human glioma cell lines. Three cell lines(U-251 MG. U0373 MG. and A-172) expressed endogenous mutant p53. and the other three(U-87 MG EFC-2, and D54 MG) expressed wild-type p53. The restoration of normal p53-encoded protein in the mutant cell lines induecd apoptosis as assessed by morphological studies using nuclear staining. electron microscopy. and flow cytometric assays. In wild-type p53 cell lines. However, the over expression of wild-type p53 did not result in apoptosis but inhibited cellular proliferation rather drastically and modified the neoplastic phenotype. This study shows that over-expression of wild-type p53 protein by an adenoviral vector induces apoptosis in mutant glioma cells as well as growth arrest in wild-type glioma cells.
