        The Mediating Effect of Self-Regulatory Skills on the Relationship between Mothers’ Parenting Attitude and School Adjustment

        After experiencing school closures and online learning caused by COVID-19, the important role of school education was reinforced. Elementary school is the foundation of life and allows students to develop both social and academic skills. The purpose of this study was to examine the mediational role of Self-Regulatory Skills (SRS) on the relationship between Maternal Parenting Attitude (MPA) and School Adjustment (SA) of elementary school students. A total of 99 students enrolled in an international school in Seoul, Korea from grades 3 to 6 participated in this study. Data were analyzed through Independent Sample T-Test, one way ANOVA, Multiple Regression Analysis, and Hierarchical Regression Analysis using the SPSS 23.0. The findings of the study were as follows. First, there is a difference between genders and among grades. Second, only acceptance was significantly related to school adjustment. Third, acceptance, strict control, and accepted control are significantly related to SRS. Fourth, Self-Regulatory Skills (Sustained Attention) fully mediate the relationship between Maternal Parenting Attitude (Acceptance) and School Adjustment (Academic Attitude/ Rule compliance). Educational implications for understanding the role of parenting attitude and future directions are discussed.

        Microbiota, a key player in alcoholic liver disease

        Alcoholic liver disease (ALD) is a major cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide. Only 20% of heavy alcohol consumers develop alcoholic liver cirrhosis. The intestinal microbiota (IM) has been recently identified as a key player in the severity of liver injury in ALD. Common features of ALD include a decrease of gut epithelial tight junction protein expression, mucin production, and antimicrobial peptide levels. This disruption of the gut barrier, which is a prerequisite for ALD, leads to the passage of bacterial products into the blood stream (endotoxemia). Moreover, metabolites produced by bacteria, such as short chain fatty acids, volatile organic compounds (VOS), and bile acids (BA), are involved in ALD pathology. Probiotic treatment, IM transplantation, or the consumption of dietary fiber, such as pectin, which all alter the ratio of bacterial species, have been shown to improve liver injury in animal models of ALD and to be associated with an improvement in gut barrier function. Although the connections between the microbiota and the host in ALD are well established, the underlying mechanisms are still an active area of research. Targeting the microbiome through the use of prebiotic, probiotic, and postbiotic modalities could be an attractive new approach to manage ALD.

      • HOW DO LUXURY WETSTERN CONSUMERS RELATE WITH VIRTUAL RARITYAND SUSTAINABLE CONSUMPTION

        Ever since sustainable development was brought up in the United Nation in 1987, sustainability has been one of the top priorities in the policy making process of different governments as well as different companies. Despite the fact that different industries have been putting efforts in promoting sustainability in their business, little effort was initially shown in the luxury industry. The sector has been regularly criticized by the general public for its lack of sustainable development imperatives. This has led to an extensive discussion in the academic field on whether luxury and sustainable development are by nature compatible or not. Some scholars suggest that the two concepts are indeed able to co-exist as they share many similarities. They suggest that virtual rarity is the key to increase the motivation of luxury consumers for sustainable luxury purchase. However, no further studies have concerned the relation between virtual rarity and sustainable luxury. It is the objective of the present paper to challenge this hypothesis, confronting it with the market perspective. Studying the views of Western regular luxury consumers towards the two concepts should ultimately help luxury managers design more efficient, and hopefully effective, strategies to promote sustainability in their companies. To achieve this objective, the paper is organized into the following parts. First, a thorough literature review helps defining the concepts of virtual rarity and of sustainable luxury, and ultimately merges both. Then, the qualitative methodology to conduct the study is explained, along with a detailed description of the methods used for data collection and data analysis. The paper then focuses on the most important theoretical and managerial findings, still acknowledging further research developments due to research limitations.

      • The effect of received word-of-mouth on consumer emotions and choice: Findings from a service industry

        Purpose - The purpose of this paper is to examine how received word-of-mouth (WOM) influence consumer emotions and, in turn, behavioral attitude and intention. Methodology/approach - A conceptual model is developed by extending the theory of reasoned action framework to include WOM and emotions. The conceptual model is operationalized by a structural equation model, and the model is estimated and tested by using the partial least squares method. A survey among 509 consumers in Denmark forms the empirical basis for the study. Findings - The study finds that positive and negative WOM has an asymmetric influence on emotions, behavioral attitude and intention, i.e., consumers respond differently to positive and negative WOM. The study also finds that positive WOM has a larger impact on behavioral attitude and intention than the social norm and that negative WOM has an impact equal to social norm. Furthermore, the study finds that emotions are an important mediator for both WOM and social norm. The findings provide strong empirical evidence for the developed model. Research limitations - The study is limited to a large travel agency in Denmark. Practical implications - This study has clear implications in terms of measuring the importance of WOM and emotions in consumer decision making. It can be a useful basis for a practical WOM marketing strategy, which is a critical and rising element in customer-focused companies□marketing strategy. The marketers should stimulate and provide content for PWOM, while attempting to manage and reduce NWOM. Originality/value - This paper provides new insights into how WOM works and the interplay between WOM, emotions and social norm in consumer decision making.

        When outbound mobility programs and service learning align in pre-service teacher education

        This project sought to investigate the learning that comes about from the intersection of outbound mobility experience programs (OMEs) with service learning in pre-service teacher education settings. The aim of the program of international service learning in the case study was to encourage pre-service teachers to rethink potentially ethnocentric assumptions. The guiding research question was, ‘What outcomes ensue from the combination of OMEs and service learning for pre-service teachers?’ The focus of the paper was on OMEs that took place in China and Malaysia. Findings included that the combined program aided development of global mindedness, learning by being there, teacher experience in a new context and the development of a professional identity in the participating students.

        Antecedents of need fulfillment among elite athletes and coaches: A qualitative approach

        The main objective of study 1 and 2 was to provide, within the framework of basic psychological need theory (BPNT), a mini-theory in self-determination theory (SDT), more in-depth understanding of the needs which athletes and coaches have in relation to each other. In particular, we wanted to investigate antecedents of the three basic psychological needs of athletes and coaches who compete at the elite level in sport. The two studies were conducted with the use of semi-structured interviews. Six former Norwegian world-class athletes participated in study 1 and four coaches with extensive experience within elite sport participated in study 2. In study 1, being seen as a whole person and being recognized in the planning process and the execution of athletes` training emerged as antecedents of autonomy. Help to improve skills and feeling supported as an athlete emerged as important for need satisfaction of competence and relatedness. Potential antecedents of need thwarting were also illuminated. In study 2, feedback on the quality of the coaches` work emerged as an antecedents of need satisfaction of competence. The need to know their athletes` life situation and how they would think and feel in different competitive situations emerged as antecedents of the coaches` need satisfaction of relatedness as it provided them with a sense of security. The results did not reveal any antecedents of need fulfillment of autonomy among the coaches. It was, however, revealed that athletes have the potential to thwart coaches` needs. 241 words

      • WOMEN'S GLOBAL NETWORKING USING ICTs

        In the past 25 years, international, regional and national women's media networks have worked together to build what has become a truly global women's movement. With a strong background ofleadership and linkages often built around the early work of more traditional international membership organizations such as the World YWCA and Associated Country Women of the World, women have set up and expanded networks ofcommunication and information that stretch into the farthest reaches ofthe world. The advent of new information technologies such as electronic networking via computers, websites, fax broadcasting, and other forms of telecommunications, has introduced a new dimension into all ofthis. These new tools and techniques for women's empowerment are expansions ofwhat has already been put in place by women worldwide. One example of a global women's network is the IWTC network. The International Women's Tribune Centre (IWTC) is an international nongovernmental organization established in 1976 following the UN International Women's Year World Conference in Mexico City. With a philosophical commitment to empowering people and building communities, IWTC provides communication, information, education, and organizing support services to women's organizations and community groups working to improve the lives of women, particularly low-income women, in Africa, Asia and the Pacific, Latin America and the Caribbean, Eastern Europe and Western Asia. Another women's global communications strategy emerged from discussions between women's information and media networks participating in the first Preparatory Committee for the UN Beijing Plus Five Special Session in 2000. These networks formed the Womennction 2000 Coalition and worked solidly to implement a communications strategy that made it possible for women community activists in every world region to participate in the Beijing Plus Five review and appraisal process. Women's media networks worldwide have continued working to get gender issues and concerns onto the agenda ofthe World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS). So much is dependent on the ability to inform and communicate with each other and with the world at large. We ask for nothing less than gender equality at every level of decisionmaking and implementation as the world becomes increasingly dependent on not only access to information but the ability and resources to produce and disseminate information.
