        Dynamic response with mass variation of laminated composite twisted plates

        In this study, the dynamic response of free vibration of laminated composite twisted (skewed) plate with mass variation via cutout and additional mass is investigated. The mathematical model employs cubic variation of the thickness coordinates in the displacement field. The mathematical formulation also includes the effects of transverse shear and rotatory inertia. A realistic parabolic distribution of transverse shear strains through the plate thickness is assumed and the use of the shear correction factor is avoided. A C 0 finite element formulation of the mathematical model is developed to analyze the dynamic behavior of laminated composite twisted plate with cutout and additional mass. Given that no results on the present problem of free vibration of laminated composite twisted plate with cutout and additional mass are available in literature, novel results for different twist angles of laminated composite plates along with mode shapes are presented by varying the geometry, boundary conditions, and ply orientations.

        Function Mapped Trajectory Estimation for ECG Sets

        Purpose The main purpose of this paper is to present twosignificant contributions in characterizing electrocardiogram(ECG) signal sets. The first contribution of the paper is theintroduction of a functional map representation of atrialfibrillation ECG signal sets using chaotic maps. Secondcontribution of this paper is to demonstrate the effectivenessof the recurrence period density entropy (RPDE) index as aneffective tool in tracking changes in rhythmic behavior ofECG signals. Methods For the first contribution, the ECG time series istested for chaotic nature using Lyapunov exponents. Ifchaotic pattern is found, phase embedded plots are extractedto compare the plots with ones of chaotic mapping functions. Kernel density estimator is used for calculating the probabilitydensity function for markovian trajectory estimation model. For the second contribution recurrence period indexes andplots are used to track changes in rhythmic behavior. Results The effectiveness of the proposed trajectory estimationmodel in estimating future probabilities of ECG signal sets,is tested using mean-squared error metric. RPDE indexesand plots provide good results in tracking the onset ofchanges in the condition of the patient form the state ofnormal ECG rhythm to the state of atrial fibrillation andsudden cardiac arrest. Conclusions Hence by using chaotic signals to functionallyrepresent ECG signal sets, we attempt to reduce the ambiguityassociated with the trajectory estimation and with RPDEindexes/plots, the transitions in rhythmic behavior becomemore prominent for analysis.

        Novel Partial Anomalous Pulmonary Venous Connection Associated with Brain Abscess

        Background Right-to-left vascular shunts are associated with brain abscess. Case Report We present a 47-year-old female with a cryptogenic left thalamic abscess onwhich Streptococcus mitis grew upon aspiration. Computed tomography of the chest with contrast agent revealed an anomalous connection between the left superior pulmonary and brachiocephalic veins. A right-to-left shunt was confirmed in a transthoracic echocardiogram study in which bubbles were injected into the left arm; this shunt had not previously been noted uponright-arm injection. Conclusions We recommend aggressive evaluation for right-to-left shunts in patients who present with cryptogenic brain abscesses. In addition to imaging, this should include a bubblebased study with left-arm saline injection.

        Applied poly(2-methoxy aniline) Sn(II)silicate carbon nanotubes composite: Synthesis, characterization, structure–property relationships and applications

        A new class hybrid poly(2-methoxy aniline) Sn(II)silicate carbon nanotubes composite was synthesized by sol–gel method. The physico-chemical characterization was carried out by Scanning Electron micrograph, X-ray Diffraction, Fourier Transform Infrared, Ultraviolet–Visible Spectroscopy and simultaneous Thermo Gravimetric Analysis. The ion-exchange studies were also carried out to understand the ion-exchange capabilities. The dc electrical conductivity studies reviles its highly conducting nature in the range of 2–3-2 S cm-1. On the basis of distribution studies it was found highly selective for Hg2+. Due to selectivity of the composite, ion selective membrane was prepared and employed it as an indicator electrode in potentiometric titrations.

        The Mediating Role of Social Media in Tourism: An eWOM Approach

        This research article investigates the way eWOM in social media influences the formation of destination image through development of trust and satisfaction for the potential tourist. The research involved administering an 18-point questionnaire taking online reviews, tourist involvement, and eWOM, destination image components of trust and satisfaction as variables. Data was collected from 554 individuals forming a cross-section of social media users and analyzed using multi-variate techniques (Reliability, CFA, and SEM). Results indicate a positive and significant relationship between all except online review and destination trust and satisfaction. Indirect and direct effects indicate that eWOM fully mediates the relationship between destination satisfaction and involvement and partially mediates the relationship between destination trust and involvement. In the case of online reviews, eWOM acts as a full mediator between destination trust and destination satisfaction for the future traveler using social media. The study proposes that components of image vary depending upon the degree of involvement, volume online reviews and eWOM generated also termed as ‘virality’ and these in turn influence the intention to revisit or recommend a destination. The study highlights its utility for National Tourist Organizations (NTOs) and online travel intermediaries to enhance destination marketing efforts.

        Computational study of radial gap effect between impeller and diffuser on the unsteadiness of vaned diffuser in a centrifugal compressor

        Understanding the unsteady fluid dynamics inside the diffuser holds the key to improve the performance of centrifugal compressor. A detailed computational study has been conducted in a low-speed centrifugal compressor to understand the unsteady flow mechanisms that govern the static pressure recovery inside the vaned diffusers. Simulations are carried out for three different leading edge locations at design and off-design conditions. The study is carried out using Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes simulations. This study revealed that the unsteady fluctuations exhibit contrasting behavior at different radial gaps and flow coefficients. An optimum radial gap is strictly a function of the stage loading. A high radial gap helps contain the fluctuations at low flow coefficients, but it enhances the fluctuations at high flow coefficients. If the leading edge is kept close to the impeller blade, then the above design flow coefficient of the vaned passage facilitates a reduction in the unsteady fluctuations. On the contrary, keeping the leading edge close to the impeller blade can accelerate the unsteady fluctuations at low flow coefficients.

        Hypoperfusion Precedes Tau Deposition in the Entorhinal Cortex: A Retrospective Evaluation of ADNI-2 Data

        Background and Purpose Tau deposition in the entorhinal cortex is the earliest pathological feature of Alzheimer’s disease (AD). However, this feature has also been observed in cognitively normal (CN) individuals and those with mild cognitive impairment (MCI). The precise pathophysiology for the development of tau deposition remains unclear. We hypothesized that reduced cerebral perfusion is associated with the development of tau deposition. Methods A subset of the Alzheimer’s Disease Neuroimaging Initiative data set was utilized. Included patients had undergone arterial spin labeling perfusion MRI along with [18F]flortaucipir tau PET at baseline, within 1 year of the MRI, and a follow-up at 6 years. The association between baseline cerebral blood flow (CBF) and the baseline and 6-year tau PET was assessed. Univariate and multivariate linear modeling was performed, with p<0.05 indicating significance. Results Significant differences were found in the CBF between patients with AD and MCI, and CN individuals in the left entorhinal cortex (p=0.013), but not in the right entorhinal cortex (p=0.076). The difference in maximum standardized uptake value ratio between 6 years and baseline was significantly and inversely associated with the baseline mean CBF (p=0.042, R2=0.54) in the left entorhinal cortex but not the right entorhinal cortex. Linear modeling demonstrated that CBF predicted 6-year tau deposition (p=0.015, R2=0.11). Conclusions The results of this study suggest that a reduction in CBF at the entorhinal cortex precedes tau deposition. Further work is needed to understand the mechanism underlying tau deposition in aging and disease.

        V-REP-based navigation of automated wheeled robot between obstacles using PSO-tuned feedforward neural network

        This paper describes the navigation of an automated Pioneer P3-DX wheeled robot between obstacles using particle swarm optimization (PSO) algorithm tuned feedforward neural network (FNN). This PSO algorithm minimizes the mean square error between the actual and predicted values of the FNN. In this work, 2 separate DC motors and 16 ultrasonic sensors have been used for making differential drive steering angle and for collecting the distance from obstacles, respectively. The proposed without tuned FNN and PSO-tuned FNN receives obstacle’s distance as inputs form ultrasonic sensors and control the steering angle of a differential drive of automated Pioneer P3-DX wheeled robot as output. We have compared the results between without tuned FNN and PSO-tuned FNN, and it has been found that PSO-tuned FNN gives a better trajectory and takes less distance to reach the target. Virtual Robot Experimentation Platform software has been used to design the real-time simulation results. A comparative study between without tuned FNN and PSO-tuned FNN verifies the effectiveness of PSO-tuned FNN for automated Pioneer P3-DX wheeled robot navigation. Also, we have compared this winner PSO-tuned FNN to the previously developed PSO-optimized Fuzzy Logic Controller navigational technique to show the authenticity and real-time implementation of PSO-tuned FNN.
