The pancreatoduodenal groove is a small area where pathologic processes involving the distal bile duct, duodenum, pancreatic head,ampulla of Vater, and retroperitoneum converge. Despite great advances in imaging techniques, a definitive preoperative diagnosis ischallenging because of the complex anatomy of this area. Therefore, surgical intervention is frequently required because of the inabilityto completely exclude malignancy. We report 3 cases of patients with different groove pathologies but similar clinical and imaging presentation, and show the essential roleof endoscopic ultrasound (EUS) in making a specific preoperative diagnosis, excluding malignancy in the first case, changing diagnosisin the second case, and confirming malignancy in the third case. EUS was a fundamental tool in this cohort of patients, not onlybecause of its ability to provide superior visualization of a diffcult anatomical region, but because of the ability to guide precise, realtimeprocedures, such as fine-needle aspiration.

Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) have desirable characteristics for use in therapy in animal models and veterinary medicine, due to their capacity of inducing tissue regeneration and immunomodulation. The objective of this study was to evaluate the differences between canine adipose tissue-derived MSCs (AD-MSCs) extracted from subcutaneous (Sc) and visceral (Vs) sites. Surface antigenic markers, in vitro differentiation, and mineralized matrix quantification of AD-MSCs at different passages (P4, P6, and P8) were studied. Immunophenotypic analysis showed that AD-MSCs from both sites were CD44+, CD90+, and CD45−. Moreover, they were able, in vitro, to differentiate into fat, cartilage, and bone. Sc-AD-MSCs preserve in vitro multipotentiality up to P8, but Vs-AD-MSCs only tri-differentiated up to P4. In addition, compared to Vs-AD-MSCs, Sc-AD-MSCs had greater capacity for in vitro mineralized matrix synthesis. In conclusion, Sc-AD-MSCs have advantages over Vs-AD-MSCs, as Sc AD-MSCs preserve multipotentiality during a greater number of passages, have more osteogenic potential, and require less invasive extraction.

An eco-friendly microbe (lactobacillus sp.)-mediated synthesis of cadmium nanoparticles is reported. The synthesis is performed at room temperature. X-ray and transmission electron microscopy analyses are performed to ascertain the formation of Cd nanoparticles. Individual nanoparticles as well as a number of aggregates almost spherical in shape having a size of 40–60 nm are found.

Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to evaluate the efficacy of a lactose- reduced synbiotic partial whey hydrolysate in formula fed infants presenting with colic and the impact of this dietary intervention in mean crying time and quality of life. Methods: Forty infants with infantile colic were treated during one month with parental reassurance and the intervention formula (partial whey hydrolysate, reduced lactose, Bifidobacterium lactis BB12 and galacto-oligosaccharides) and were compared to a control group of 20 infants with infantile colic treated with parental reassurance and a standard infant formula. Parents completed a quality of life (QoL) questionnaire assessing the burden of infantile colic. Wilcoxon test, t-test and Mann-Whitney test were used to compare QoL scores before and after intervention as well as between the intervention and control group.Results: At inclusion, duration of crying did not differ between both groups. Crying duration decreased with 2.7 hours (from 3.2 to 0.5 hours) in the intervention group while duration of crying decreased only with 1.2 hours in the control group (p<0.001). Stool composition became looser in the intervention group, but defecation frequency did not change. The median scores of the QoL questionnaire improved significantly in the intervention group for all parameters. In the control group, parameters improved significantly also but not for the parent-child and social interaction. The score changes were significantly greater in the intervention than in the control group.Conclusion: The intervention formula (partial whey hydrolysate, synbiotic, reduced lactose) significantly reduced the duration of crying and improved QoL of the parents and infants.
