      • Quantitatively Investigating the Effects of Multiple Strategies on Pre-Services Teachers’ Mindset and Persistence

        ( Amanda Meiners ),( Kyong Mi Choi ),( Dae Hong ) 한국수학교육학회 2020 수학교육연구 Vol.23 No.2

Pre-service teachers (PST)are students who are developing theirmindset, persistence, instructional practices, and perception of tasks from two perspectives: as currentstudents and as future teachers. As part of a larger study with PSTs engaged in a mindset intervention, this study quantitatively investigated PSTs mindset and persistence. During professional development (PD), PSTs engaged in multiple strategies (MS)tasks that promoted changes to PSTs mindset and persistence.PSTs’ mindset pre-and post-PD were categorized after attending at least 4 interventionsas fixed, mixed, or growth using the theory of intelligence, and their persistence as high or low using the Grit-S.Changes in categorization were noticed and explored for reasons of what could be done to make mindset interventions more effective such as consistently using challenging mathematics tasks with more open ended answers and focusing on discussion based mathematical lessons.

Deviant Sexuality and Positive Outcomes in Ulysses and The Waste Land

Amanda Lynn Greenwood 한국제임스조이스학회 2013 제임스조이스저널 Vol.19 No.2

This essay aims to highlight the forms of deviant sexuality in the “Nausicaa” episode of Ulysses and the sections “A Game of Chess” and “The Fire Sermon” in The Waste Land. At the same time, uncovering biographical details from the authors’ personal lives can help us to understand why they were so fixated on this type of sexuality and may aid us in understanding why these deviant behaviors can be a form of positive outcomes and liberation for the characters and/or societies in the works.

Critical Review of North Korean Women and Children's Health, 2000-2019: Physical and Mental Health Challenges with a Focus on Gender

Amanda Wright,김은미,변인수 이화여자대학교 국제지역연구소 2019 Asian International Studies Review Vol.20 No.2

Women account for over eighty percent of recent North Koreandefectors arriving in South Korea, yet there is dearth ofgender-based research. Given the speed with which the dialogueon denuclearization with the Democratic People’s Republic ofKorea (DPRK, North Korea) has progressed since 2017, there isa surprising gap in research on possible health threats. Ifsanctions are eased, interactions with these previously isolatedpeople will increase leading to potential health problems. Thisarticle reviews studies published since 2000 to understandphysical and mental health faced in DPRK, among North Koreandefectors to South Korea, and to provide policy recommendations. A content analysis of ninety studies found that mental healthchallenges are severe for North Korean defectors, and thatwomen suffer differently than men during defection and itsaftermath. We recommend a more nuanced and genderedapproach for future research in order to devise tangible solutionsto improve the health of North Koreans in general, and defectorwomen and children in particular.

The Applicability of Hybrid Peacebuilding in Ethno-Religious Conflict: A Case Study of the Uighur-Han Conflict in Xinjiang, China

Amanda Fish 이화여자대학교 국제지역연구소 2022 Asian International Studies Review Vol.23 No.1

This study attempted to examine to what extent hybrid peacebuilding would be applicable in Xinjiang’s ethnic conflict between the Han and Uighurs. After situating hybrid peacebuilding within the liberal peacebuilding literature, for further contextualization, the study then extrapolated key information from several other Asian cases of hybrid peacebuilding. It then overviewed the conflict (the parties involved and their various perspectives), outlined the modern efforts to resolve the conflict, and determined how they remain problematic. Finally, the study qualitatively analyzed the theoretical applicability of hybrid peacebuilding, its potential benefits, and potential drawbacks. The study concluded that hybrid peacebuilding has theoretical potential in Xinjiang, especially in the future, but its current drawbacks hinder its chances of success.

China’s Role in Ensuring Human Security in North Korea

Amanda Fish 이화여자대학교 국제지역연구소 2023 Asian International Studies Review Vol.24 No.2

This study analyzes China’s current role in human security in North Korea, utilizing both broad and narrow interpretations of human security in its analysis. It outlines Chinese engagement with North Korea, human security as a concept, and Chinese conceptualizations of human security, then examines the role China plays in North Korean human security in terms of food aid, development and infrastructure projects, refugee repatriation, and sanctions. It argues that while China protects human security in terms of food aid, it does not promote human security intentionally, as its motivations are strongly related to traditional territorial security. Furthermore, China harms North Korean security when it comes to refugees. In areas of infrastructure and sanctions, however, it has negligible impact. The study thus concludes ways in which China ensures, harms, and negligibly impacts human security in North Korea.

A descriptive study of on-farm biosecurity and management practices during the incursion of porcine epidemic diarrhea into Canadian swine herds, 2014

        Amanda M. Perri,Zvonimir Poljak,Cate Dewey,John CS. Harding,Terri L. O'Sullivan 대한수의학회 2020 Journal of Veterinary Science Vol.21 No.2

Porcine epidemic diarrhea virus (PEDV) emerged into Canada in January 2014, primarily affecting sow herds. Subsequent epidemiological analyses suggested contaminated feed was the most likely transmission pathway. The primary objective of this study was to describe general biosecurity and management practices implemented in PEDV-positive sow herds and matched control herds at the time the virus emerged. The secondary objective was to determine if any of these general biosecurity and farm management practices were important in explaining PEDV infection status from January 22, 2014 to March 1, 2014. A case herd was defined as a swine herd with clinical signs and a positive test result for PEDV. A questionnaire was used to a gather 30-day history of herd management practices, animal movements on/off site, feed management practices, semen deliveries and biosecurity practices for case (n = 8) and control (n = 12) herds, primarily located in Ontario. Data was analyzed using descriptive statistics and random forests (RFs). Case herds were larger in size than control herds. Case herds had more animal movements and non-staff movements onto the site. Also, case herds had higher quantities of pigs delivered, feed deliveries and semen deliveries on-site. The biosecurity practices of case herds were considered more rigorous based on herd management, feed deliveries, transportation and truck driver practices than control herds. The RF model found that the most important variables for predicting herd status were related to herd size and feed management variables. Nonetheless, predictive accuracy of the final RF model was 72%.

      • HOW DO CONSUMERS EVALUATE OVERLAPPING BRANDS? THE ROLE OF CORPORATE VERSUS PRODUCT BRAND DOMINANCE

Amanda Spry,Ann Wallin 글로벌지식마케팅경영학회 2016 Global Marketing Conference Vol.2016 No.7

Most major consumer goods manufacturers market multiple brands within a single product category. Companies may sell brands of different quality levels (e.g., Giorgio Armani, Armani Collezioni, and Armani Exchange). And, within each quality level, companies sell variants of a brand, which differ in functionality (Crest’s cavity protection, tartar control, and whitening toothpastes). With the ultimate goal of securing consumer purchase, companies offer an increasing number of brands, which can result in “overlap” between the brands in a firm’s portfolio. We define overlap from a consumer’s perspective as the degree to which a brand is perceived to offer the same product features as other brands owned by the same firm. The few seminal papers (Aribarg & Arora, 2008; Hui, 2004; Morgan & Rego, 2009) indicate that overlap brings with it a number of compelling advantages and disadvantages, thereby having the potential for positive or negative outcomes. Thus the question arises: When does overlap have a positive or negative effect on consumers’ brand evaluations? We argue that the actual effect of overlap on consumer evaluations depends on two strategic marketing factors: (1) the dominance of the corporate brand versus the product brand in marketing communications of a product, and (2) the type of overlap – vertical (i.e., overlap between products that vary in quality) or horizontal (i.e., overlap between products that vary in functionality). A 2 x 4 between-subjects factorial design was employed to test consumers’ responses to overlap of product extensions under different conditions. The stimulus was developed in two categories: chocolate and wine. The stimulus involved a picture of the packaging for a fictitious product extension for a real parent company (Hershey’s in the chocolate category and Yellow tail in the wine category), accompanied by a descriptor providing product information such as details of its price and features. We collected data using an online questionnaire via Amazon Mechanical Turk. A sample of 366 individual consumers provided data across both the chocolate and wine categories. Our initial results for the chocolate product category indicate that, for the vertical extension, Cocoa Black, consumers evaluated the chocolate bar for which the product brand was dominant more favourably (μ = 5.44) than that for which the corporate brand was dominant (μ = 4.95). This evaluation difference was statistically significant (t = -1.84, p < .05). For the horizontal extension, Peppermint Air Delight, there was a significant difference in evaluation for overlapping products (t = 1.74, p < .05) for which the corporate brand was dominant (μ = 4.60), compared to that for which the product brand was dominant (μ = 3.96). These preliminary results show promise in terms of providing practitioners with prescriptive guidelines for managing overlap to their benefit. The results of this study will be presented in full at the Global Marketing Conference 2016.
