Undergraduate students’ and teachers’ perceptions of professional development and identity formation: A case study in Greece

        Amalia A. Ifanti,Vasiliki S. Fotopoulou 한국교육개발원 2010 KEDI Journal of Educational Policy Vol.7 No.1

In this paper, we explore the formation of teachers’ professional identity by investigating the views of undergraduate students and in-service teachers and examine whether the development of their professional identity occurs during the undergraduate studies or is it a lifelong process. An empirical study was carried out in the University of Patras Department of Primary Education, Greece. Our research data revealed that students were acquainted with the issues of professionalism and identity formation and teachers greatly attributed to the attainment of their further professional development, which was accepted as an on-going process. The importance of professionalism and professional identity were highlighted by both groups and their answers in many cases tended to be similar, according to the statistical analysis.

Improving Community Education on Fish Consumption Using Social Behavior Change Communication (SBCC)

Amalia E. Maulana People&Global Business Association 2021 Global Business and Finance Review Vol.26 No.4

Purpose: This study aims to uncover the behavioral segmentation variables that differentiate the problems relating to adoption barriers to fish in-home consumption, which can be used when designing an effective and efficient community education program. Design/methodology/approach: The study uses an ethnographic approach with various data collection methods, including expert interviews and focus group discussions with both businesses and government institutions in the fisheries domain, direct observation of Gemarikan (Social Activities for promoting fish consumption) and in-depth interviews with program targets. The results of each method of data collection are discussed in this study. Findings: The study provides evidence that a one-size-fits-all education program is not a solution as not all consumers need to be educated in the same way, by using the social behavior change communication (SBCC) framework to understand the program’s effectiveness. The study focuses on behavior-based segmentation variables by grouping consumers according to a more homogeneous categorization in terms of problems or consumer needs. The results revealed two characteristic consumer variables that influence the likelihood of someone eating fish at home: (1) childhood experiences and (2) cooking skills. These two variables are linked to a previously discovered behavior-based variable: tier-based adoption barriers in the consumer journey. Using these three variables, an integrative typology of consumers was systematically created. Research limitations/implications: The study provides a newly designed integrative typology of consumers that could be used to overcome adoption barriers to fish in-home consumption in various locations. Previous studies have focused on demographic variables, but the use of behavior-based segmentation as the basis of categorization is more relevant to resolve the issues. Originality/value: With this integrative consumer typology, it will be easier for designers of fish consumption education campaigns to identify problems in the target segment and create more contextual activities. To avoid ineffectiveness and inefficiencies, educators need to ensure that resources in educational activities are not wasted by prioritizing the consumer segment that is most open to adopting fish in-home consumption and by postponing programs towards the segment that is least open to doing so.

The oval technique for nipple-areolar complex reconstruction

        Amalia Vozza,Fabio Larocca,Giuseppe Ferraro,Giovanni Francesco Nicolett,Francesco D’Andrea 대한성형외과학회 2019 Archives of Plastic Surgery Vol.46 No.2

Background Nipple-areolar complex (NAC) reconstruction is the final stage of breast reconstruction. Ideal reconstruction of the NAC requires symmetry in position, size, shape, texture, pigmentation, and permanent projection, and although many technical descriptions of NAC reconstruction exist in the medical literature, there is no gold standard technique. The technique devised by the authors is very versatile, with excellent results, and it enables 1-step reconstruction with optimal results in terms of shape and nipple projection. Methods Our technique consists of a combination of modified local flaps and a full-thickness skin graft. Patients were observed for 18 months to estimate the amount of retraction. This procedure was performed in 40 patients, four of them bilaterally. The duration of the follow- up was 30 months. Complications occurred in 10% of patients, and included infections (5%), ischemia (2.5%), and hematoma (2.5%). Results No cases of total nipple necrosis were reported. The NAC shape remained optimal in all cases, with a very small reduction of the vertical and horizontal diameters of the areola, which maintained its designed round shape well, and negligible retraction in the diameter and projection of the nipple. Conclusions The oval technique represents a major step forward, involving a combination of existing techniques, such as the C-V flap and the cutaneous graft, to achieve excellent results regarding areola shape and nipple projection, significantly reducing the cases of nipple ischemia. These results were substantially obtained through subcutaneous equatorial sutures, skin grafting, and flattening of the apexes of the flap.

Sardinian honeys as sources of xanthine oxidase and tyrosinase inhibitors

        Amalia Di Petrillo,Celestino Santos-Buelga,Benedetta Era,Ana Maria Gonza´lez-Parama´s,Carlo Ignazio Giovanni Tuberoso,RosariaMedda,Francesca Pintus,Antonella Fais 한국식품과학회 2018 Food Science and Biotechnology Vol.27 No.1

Sardinian honeys obtained from different floral sources (Arbutus, Asphodelus, Eucalyptus, Thistle, and Sulla) were evaluated for their ability to inhibit tyrosinase and xanthine oxidase enzymes and for their antioxidant activity. Physicochemical parameters, total phenolic, and flavonoids content were also determined. Honey from Arbutus flowers had the highest antioxidant activity followed by Eucalyptus and Thistle ones. These three honeys showed good tyrosinase and xanthine oxidase inhibition properties. Thus, these Sardinian honeys could have a great potential as antioxidant sources for pharmaceutical and cosmetic applications.

The status of undergraduate educational policy in university departments of education in Greece

Amalia A. Ifanti 한국교육개발원 2007 KEDI Journal of Educational Policy Vol.4 No.1

The author sought to determine how educational policy taught to university undergraduates in primary and pre-primary education departments in Greece (i.e., Athens, Thessaloniki, Patras, Joannina, Crete, and Thessaly) might be improved. A questionnaire, based on information previously collected from the educational departments at the University of Patras in Greece, was distributed to 395 students in twelve Greek educational schools. Analysis of the 310 responses (78.5%) showed that concerning educational policy there is neither a common context nor common content in the syllabi of the departments under consideration, and educational policy is either integrated with other subjects or taught independently. The students’ level of studies in educational policy was believed to be average (49%), satisfactory (36%), low (13%), and high (3%). Insufficiencies (72%) were attributed to few hours of instruction and limitations of infrastructure and research; whereas sufficient education (24%) was attributed to instruction by specialists. Most students (74%) believed that educational policy should be taught as a discrete subject. In conclusion, educational policy is generally taught in conjunction with compulsory and elective subjects in Greece, and the level of studies in educational policy is not sufficient. The students’ satisfaction in studying educational policy is operationally defined and related to educational policy being taught as an independent subject by subject specialists.

      • Negotiating Resistance: Women, Peace and Leadership in Dayah in Post-conflict Aceh

        Rizki Amalia Affiat,Mieke T.A. Lopes Cardozo,Maida Irawani,Eka Srimulyani 이화여자대학교 아시아여성학센터 2017 이화여자대학교 아시아여성학센터 학술대회자료집 Vol.2017 No.7

There is a current gap in knowledge on the important role of women grassroots actors in processes of peace building, and more specifically the possibilities and limits to women`s agency in supporting peaceful societies through Islamic education systems. Amidst the masculine aspects and maledominated sphere of post-conflict development, the agency of women educational leaders actually serves as potential agents of societal change (or of reproduction) in processes of peacebuilding and social justice. The paper explores the context of education, religion in dayah (Islamic traditional school), and its surrounding structures, with a close link to what extent and how an Islamic perception of women`s role in fostering peace, understanding and social justice is conceptualized and enacted. Adding a gender-specific lens to explore the contextual understanding of agency through the strategic relational approach and cultural political economy (Jessop, 2005), the key aim of the paper is to understand various ways in which female educators negotiate and navigate largely restricted patriarchal and religiously orthodox spaces (Mahmood, 2005; 2011). Committed to representing the often silenced and marginalized voice of female leaders, educators and grassroots actors, the paper explores their views and experiences in consciously or unconsciously transforming or reproducing existing inequalities and potential conflict-triggers in the cultural political economy context of contemporary Aceh.
