Characterization of carbon dioxide capture by glucosamine: Liquid phase speciation and degradation
Alicia Garcı´a-Abuı´n,Diego Go´ mez-Dı´az,Jose´ M. Navaza 한국공업화학회 2014 Journal of Industrial and Engineering Chemistry Vol.20 No.4
Carbon dioxide capture by chemical absorption can be improved attending to the reaction mechanism due to the different stoichiometry shown by the most important reactions (mainly production of bicarbonate/carbonate ion, and carbamate) involved in the process. The weight of each reaction upon the carbon dioxide absorption determines the loading value and the rate of amine consumption which can influence upon reaction rate. On the other hand, the degradation rate of amines during the regeneration step can play a very important role in carbon dioxide separation process increasing the amount of amine make-up flow-rate.

In Peru handicraft production is an activity complementary to agriculture which transmits cultural traditions across the generations. This article presents an analysis of the Fair Trade practices inside two organizations which support the production and marketing of Peruvian artisanal handicrafts. First, basic information is presented concerning the Fair Trade, its definition, practices, and products. Next, information regarding Peruvian artisanal products is presented as along with Fair Trade handcrafts export data. Two handicrafts producer organizations are then analyzed as case studies of Fair Trade practices carried out for producer communities in the Peruvian Andes where conditions of extreme poverty predominate. Through these case studies the article provides a detailed description of how the implementation of Fair Trade practices in the selected Peruvian handicrafts producer organizations has helped them enhance their markets.
Irish Melancholy in Lady Gregory’s Writings
Alicia Ye Sul Oh 한국예이츠학회 2021 한국예이츠 저널 Vol.66 No.-
With her Ascendancy background and enormous contributions made to the Irish Literary Revival, which idealized the Irish peasantry, Lady Gregory’s political and cultural legacy has been described most often as contradictory. This paper contends that paying close attention to Lady Gregory’s concept of Irish melancholy in her writings, especially Spreading the News, allows us to envision a more nuanced picture of her conflicted mind. In her eyes, Irish melancholy is an affect representative of the Irish peasantry’s potential for political subversion and creative, imaginative prosperity. Yet, she also acknowledges its self-destructive capacity. The paper occasionally draws from Lady Gregory’s unpublished essay “Laughter in Ireland” and The Gaol Gate (1906).

In this study, lignocellulosic fibers from Agave salmiana –an important socio-economical species endemic toMexico– were used to reinforce thermoplastic maize starch (TPS). Fibers from young raw leaves (YRL) and old roastedleaves (ORL) were obtained according to the traditional methods used by small producers. The formulations of biocompositeswere obtained varying the content of both types of fiber and processed by extrusion and injection molding. Morphological, structural, mechanical, thermal, and thermomechanical properties of biocomposites were evaluated. To use the hydrophilicityof these materials as an advantage in unexplored applications, biocomposites behavior under degradative tests such asaccelerated aging and salt water immersion was evaluated. The processes of heating the old leaves partially removed thelignin and hemicellulose layer from the fibers, which led to a better interaction fiber-matrix, as confirmed by FESEM, ATRFTIR,and TGA. Biocomposites with 30 wt% of YRL fiber reported the highest values of tensile strength and Young’smodulus when compared to ORL biocomposites and with TPS. Accelerated aging exposure affected mainly thethermomechanical properties of TPS and confirmed the reinforcing effect of the fibers due to the thermal and mechanicalstability they provided to the matrix, especially when 20 wt% of fiber was added. This was also observed when biocompositeswere immersed in salt water solution. Using Agave salmiana fiber obtained from different leaf ages by traditional methods in theproduction of biocomposites promotes the complete harnessing of this species and represents a possibility to small producersin Mexico to introduce circular economy in their communities.

Mechanical thrombectomy renders the occluding clot available for analysis. Insights into thrombus composition could help establish the stroke cause. We aimed to investigate the value of clot composition analysis as a complementary diagnostic tool in determining the etiology of large vessel occlusion (LVO) ischemic strokes (International Prospective Register of Systematic Reviews [PROSPERO] registration # CRD42020199436). Following the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines, we ran searches on Medline (using the PubMed interface) and Web of Science for studies reporting analyses of thrombi retrieved from LVO stroke patients subjected to mechanical thrombectomy (January 1, 2006 to September 21, 2020). The PubMed search was updated weekly up to February 22, 2021. Reference lists of included studies and relevant reviews were hand-searched. From 1,714 identified studies, 134 eligible studies (97 cohort studies, 31 case reports, and six case series) were included in the qualitative synthesis. Physical, histopathological, biological, and microbiological analyses provided information about the gross appearance, mechanical properties, structure, and composition of the thrombi. There were non-unanimous associations of thrombus size, structure, and composition (mainly proportions of fibrin and blood formed elements) with the Trial of Org 10172 in Acute Stroke Treatment (TOAST) etiology and underlying pathologies, and similarities between cryptogenic thrombi and those of known TOAST etiology. Individual thrombus analysis contributed to the diagnosis, mainly in atypical cases. Although cohort studies report an abundance of quantitative rates of main thrombus components, a definite clot signature for accurate diagnosis of stroke etiology is still lacking. Nevertheless, the qualitative examination of the embolus remains an invaluable tool for diagnosing individual cases, particularly regarding atypical stroke causes.
