A rare case of an unruptured sinus of Valsalva aneurysm (SVA) in a 2-month-old male Maltese terrier weighing 1.0 kg with a heart murmur is presented. A right SVA and a ventricular septal defect (VSD) were diagnosed by echocardiography and cardiac catheterization. The dogdied due to a worsening of his condition. The necropsy revealed the sinus of Valsalva to have a diameter of 7 mm and a VSD hole was on the opposite surface. This report is the first to describe an unruptured SVA in the right coronary cusp of a small dog.

The purpose of this study is to investigate effects of the satisfaction of basic psychological needs (competence, autonomy, and relatedness) on academic performance during the Intensive Arabic Camp in Rurikei. The Camp activities ran for approximately one week in 2015 and again in 2016 in Rurikei, a suburb of Kyoto, Japan. One of the goals was to offer the participants basic psychological need satisfaction, as defined by the self-determination theory. Academic performance during the Camp was measured using the results of written and oral examinations, which were conducted before and after the Camp. The authors’ previous studies show that the participants’ need satisfaction generally increased due to the methods utilized in the Camp (Sumi & Sumi, 2019). Data were gathered from 95 participants in the Camp, who were mostly university students in Japan. The results showed that the written examination scores from after the Camp were positively affected by the satisfaction of autonomy and competence during the Camp. The oral examination scores from after the Camp were positively affected by the satisfaction of competence and relatedness during the Camp. These results suggest that the methods used within the Camp to increase need satisfaction also may enhance the participants’ motivation to learn Arabic, which in turn elevates the degree of their academic performance.

The Intensive Arabic Camp in Rurikei is an intensive Arabic program that was held for one week in 2015 and 2016, in Rurikei, which is in the suburbs of Kyoto, Japan. This intensive program was designed to increase participants’’ satisfaction of basic psychological needs (i.e., competence, autonomy, and relatedness) which can be applied for successful learning as defined in the self-determination theory. The purpose of this study is to examine how much the camp satisfied the participants’ basic needs. The data were collected from a total of 95 participants who were mostly students in universities in Japan and had attended the camp in either year. Before and after the camp, the participants answered open questions as to their basic needs. The results indicate that the needs satisfactions ratings during the camp were statistically significantly higher (p < 0.01) than those before the camp. Some Pearson correlations between the rating scores were statistically significant. These results suggest that the support for the needs satisfaction within the camp was appropriate; accordingly, in this sense, the purpose of the camp was accomplished. The implications of the results and some recommendations for improving Arabic instruction in universities in Japan are discussed.

1′-Acetoxychavicol acetate (ACA) is found in the rhizomes or seeds of Alpinia galanga and Alpinia conchigera, which are used as traditional spices in cooking and traditional medicines in Southeast Asia. ACA possesses numerous medicinal properties. Those include anticancer, antiobesity, antiallergy, antimicrobial, antidiabetic, gastroprotective, and anti-inflammatory activities. ACA is also observed to exhibit antidementia activity. Recent studies have demonstrated that combining ACA with other substances results in synergistic anticancer effects. The structural factors that regulate the activity of ACA include (1) the acetyl group at position 1′, (2) the acetyl group at position 4, and (3) the unsaturated double bond between positions 2′ and 3′. ACA induces the activation of AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK), which regulates the signal transduction pathways, and has an important role in the prevention of diseases, including cancer, obesity, hyperlipidemia, diabetes, and neurodegenerative disorders. Such findings suggest that AMPK has a central role in different pharmacological functions of ACA, and ACA is useful for the prevention of life-threatening diseases. However, more studies should be performed to evaluate the clinical effects of ACA and to better understand its potential.

This paper aims to explore the characteristics of self-regulated learning from information gained in post-questionnaire interviews, with special emphasis on the differences between low-proficiency learners and high-proficiency learners. Self-regulated learning is a cyclical process to metacognitively, motivationally, and behaviorally boost learning performance (Zimmerman & Schunk, 2001). Fukuda (2018a) quantitatively revealed the motivational and cognitive differences of self-regulated learning skills between the low- and high-proficiency groups, showing that self-regulated learning significantly influenced language learning achievement, which is consistent with most other studies. However, those have not addressed less-proficient learners enough to understand how they perceive self-regulated learning. Seven low-proficiency learners and ten high-proficiency learners participated and were selected based on a questionnaire regarding self-regulated language learning. The researcher adapted semi-structured interviews based on the factors in the Motivated Strategies for Learning Questionnaire (MSLQ). The results showed the obvious characteristics that the less-proficient learners possessed. Interviews consistently revealed that the less-proficient learners had a peculiar self-regulated learning attitude that was different from the more-proficient learners. Because the less-proficient learners strongly emphasized the outcome of the exams or performance compared to others, they tended to rarely feel successful in their English education experience, which seemed to cause them to give up learning English and make them reluctant to ask teachers for help. These tendencies demonstrated the importance of teacher encouragement of learner motivational satisfaction and the promotion of the use of various metacognitive strategies.

Objectives: One of the important risk factors of falling is decreased muscle mass and muscle strength. Recently, there has been an increasing concern on the role of vitamin D in muscle strength and physical activity. Aim of our study is to examine the relationships between vitamin D status and muscle mass and muscle strength in middle-aged healthy adults. Methods: Subjects were 40 healthy volunteers aged 42.0 ± 10.6 years old. Evaluation was made for serum vitamin D3 metabolites including 25- hydroxyvitamin D3 [25(OH)D3] and 24,25-dihydroxyvitamin D3 [24,25(OH)2D3] concentrations, lower limb muscle strength, and dietary intake by food frequency questionnaire. Body composition was measured by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA), and appendicular skeletal mass index (ASMI) was calculated as skeletal muscle mass/squared height. Results: 70% of the subjects had vitamin D insufficiency/deficiency (serum total 25(OH)D < 20 ng/mL), and female subjects had significantly lower serum total 25(OH)D level compared with males. Vitamin D insufficiency/deficiency group had significantly higher body fat, lower SMI and muscle strength, probably reflecting higher percentage of female subjects. Serum vitamin D3 metabolites levels were significantly correlated with whole and site-specific ASMI, and lower limb muscle strength, except for the correlation between serum 24,25(OH)2D3 concentration and lower limb muscle strength. In addition, serum 25(OH)D3 level was a positive significant predictor for both ASMI and lower limb muscle strength, while serum 24,25(OH)2D3 level was not their significant predictor. Conclusions: Serum 25(OH)D3 level was significantly correlated with both skeletal muscle mass and lower limb muscle strength.
Choroidal Venous Pulsations at an Arterio-venous Crossing in Polypoidal Choroidal Vasculopathy
Akiko Okubo,Munefumi Sameshima,Taiji Sakamoto 대한안과학회 2013 Korean Journal of Ophthalmology Vol.27 No.5
It has been reported that pulsations in abnormal vessels are observed on indocyanine green (ICG)angiography in half of patients with polypoidal choroidal vasculopathy (PCV), although the mechanism of the pulsation is unknown. In this study, we report a case of PCV showing venous pulsations at an arteriovenous (A-V) crossing, and discuss a possible mechanism of polypoidal vessel formation and pulsations in PCV. A 66-year-old female presented with a reddish-orange elevated lesion and serous retinal detachment in the macula of her left eye, and was diagnosed as PCV. She was treated with photodynamic therapy (PDT),and followed-up through routine examinations, including ICG angiography. ICG angiography at presentation showed a branching vascular network and choroidal venules with dye leakage (polypoidal vessels) in the left eye. Pulsations, supposedly of venous origin, were observed at an A-V crossing in the abnormal vessels. Within 3 months after PDT, the polypoidal vessel ceased to leak and the pulsations vanished. The reddish-orange lesion gradually decreased in size with complete disappearance of retinal detachment. This study suggests that an unusual compression at an A-V crossing may make a venule polypoidal, and fluctuations of blood flow and pressure in the venule may cause pulsatile movements of the vessel wall.
