From Organic Nature to Secular Apocalypse in D. H. Lawrence`s Central Novels

        ( Adina Ciugureanu ) 한국로렌스학회 2016 D.H. 로렌스 연구 Vol.24 No.1

The article discusses Lawrence’s view on nature from the Romantic perspective to the ‘apocalyptic’ image caused by forceful industrialism and Machine-Man rise, in rural and urban areas. Having studied botany at the university and looking upon man as part of an organic universe (the Romantic view), D. H. Lawrence becomes one of the pioneers of the “literature of environmental consciousness” (Janik 107), which gives support to the reading of his work through eco-critical lenses. Thus, the article focuses on the paradigm shift, which one may notice in his fiction, from nature to culture, from country to town and from farming to industry, leading both to the ruining of nature, as envisaged by the Romantics, and to the fall of man from cyclical time to linear history, as the effect of modernity. Though Lawrence rejects the theological view of an imminent, oncoming End and shifts from looking upon man and nature as a whole (Sons and Lovers, The Rainbow) to perceiving them in conflict (Women in Love), the nihilistic perspective in Women in Love (as a possible influence by Nietzsche), builds the argument for the envisaging of a secular apocalypse to replace the Biblical one. Yet, however scary nature apocalypse may be, Lawrence’s portrayal of it is, I argue, non-tragic and imbued with strong ironical tones.

      • The Decision-Making Journey of Malaysian Women with Early Breast Cancer: A Qualitative Study

Abdullah, Adina,Abdullah, Khatijah Lim,Yip, Cheng Har,Teo, Soo-Hwang,Taib, Nur Aishah,Ng, Chirk Jenn Asian Pacific Journal of Cancer Prevention 2013 Asian Pacific journal of cancer prevention Vol.14 No.12

Background: The survival outcomes for women presenting with early breast cancer are influenced by treatment decisions. In Malaysia, survival outcome is generally poor due to late presentation. Of those who present early, many refuse treatment for complementary therapy. Objective: This study aimed to explore the decision making experiences of women with early breast cancer. Materials and Methods: A qualitative study using individual in-depth interviews was conducted to capture the decision making process of women with early breast cancer in Malaysia. We used purposive sampling to recruit women yet to undergo surgical treatment. A total of eight participants consented and were interviewed using a semi-structured interview guide. These women were recruited from a period of one week after they were informed of their diagnoses. A topic guide, based on the Ottawa decision support framework (ODSF), was used to facilitate the interviews, which were audio recorded, transcribed and analysed using a thematic approach. Results: We identified four phases in the decision-making process of women with early breast cancer: discovery (pre-diagnosis); confirmatory ('receiving bad news'); deliberation; and decision (making a decision). These phases ranged from when women first discovered abnormalities in their breasts to them making final surgical treatment decisions. Information was vital in guiding these women. Support from family members, friends, healthcare professionals as well as survivors also has an influencing role. However, the final say on treatment decision was from themselves. Conclusions: The treatment decision for women with early breast cancer in Malaysia is a result of information they gather on their decision making journey. This journey starts with diagnosis. The women's spouses, friends, family members and healthcare professionals play different roles as information providers and supporters at different stages of treatment decisions. However, the final treatment decision is influenced mainly by women's own experiences, knowledge and understanding.

      • Romanian-Lexicon-Based Sentiment Analysis for Assesing Teachers' Activity

Barila, Adina,Danubianu, Mirela,Gradinaru, Bogdanel International Journal of Computer ScienceNetwork S 2022 International journal of computer science and netw Vol.22 No.10

The students' feedback is important to measure and improve teaching performance. Many teacher performance evaluation systems are based on responses to closed question, but the free text answers can contain useful information which had to be explored. In this paper we present a lexicon-based sentiment analysis to explore students' text feedback. The data was collected from a system for the evaluation of teachers by students developed and used in our university. The students comments are in Romanian language so we built a Romanian sentiment word lexicon. We used this to categorize the feeback text as positive, negative or neutral. In addition, we added a new polarity - indifferent - in order to categorize blank and "I don't answer" responses.

      • Towards a Deep Analysis of High School Students' Outcomes

Barila, Adina,Danubianu, Mirela,Paraschiv, Andrei Marcel International Journal of Computer ScienceNetwork S 2021 International journal of computer science and netw Vol.21 No.6

Education is one of the pillars of sustainable development. For this reason, the discovery of useful information in its process of adaptation to new challenges is treated with care. This paper aims to present the initiation of a process of exploring the data collected from the results obtained by Romanian students at the BBaccalaureate (the Romanian high school graduation) exam, through data mining methods, in order to try an in-depth analysis to find and remedy some of the causes that lead to unsatisfactory results. Specifically, a set of public data was collected from the website of the Ministry of Education, on which several classification methods were tested in order to find the most efficient modeling algorithm. It is the first time that this type of data is subjected to such interests.

An Improved Approach to Identify Bacterial Pathogens to Human in Environmental Metagenome

        양지훈,Adina Howe,이재진,유근제,박준홍 한국미생물·생명공학회 2020 Journal of microbiology and biotechnology Vol.30 No.9

The identification of bacterial pathogens to humans is critical for environmental microbial risk assessment. However, current methods for identifying pathogens in environmental samples are limited in their ability to detect highly diverse bacterial communities and accurately differentiate pathogens from commensal bacteria. In the present study, we suggest an improved approach using a combination of identification results obtained from multiple databases, including the multilocus sequence typing (MLST) database, virulence factor database (VFDB), and pathosystems resource integration center (PATRIC) databases to resolve current challenges. By integrating the identification results from multiple databases, potential bacterial pathogens in metagenomes were identified and classified into eight different groups. Based on the distribution of genes in each group, we proposed an equation to calculate the metagenomic pathogen identification index (MPII) of each metagenome based on the weighted abundance of identified sequences in each database. We found that the accuracy of pathogen identification was improved by using combinations of multiple databases compared to that of individual databases. When the approach was applied to environmental metagenomes, metagenomes associated with activated sludge were estimated with higher MPII than other environments (i.e., drinking water, ocean water, ocean sediment, and freshwater sediment). The calculated MPII values were statistically distinguishable among different environments (p < 0.05). These results demonstrate that the suggested approach allows more for more accurate identification of the pathogens associated with metagenomes.

Glyceollin Transport, Metabolism, and Effects on P-Glycoprotein Function in Caco-2 Cells

        Chukwuemezie Chimezie,Adina C. Ewing,Syeda S. Quadri,Richard B. Cole,Stephen M. Boue,Christopher F. Omari,Melyssa Bratton,Elena Glotser,Elena Skripnikova,Ian Townley,Robert E. Stratford 한국식품영양과학회 2014 Journal of medicinal food Vol.17 No.4

Glyceollins are phytoalexins produced in soybeans from their isoflavone precursor daidzein. Their impressive anticancer and glucose normalization effects in rodents have generated interest in their therapeutic potential. The aim of the present studies was to begin to understand glyceollin intestinal transport and metabolism, and their potential effects on P-glycoprotein (Pgp) in Caco-2 cells. At 10 and 25 lM, glyceollin permeability was 2.4 – 0.16 · 10- 4 cm/sec and 2.1 – 0.15 · 10- 4 cm/sec, respectively, in the absorptive direction. Basolateral to apical permeability at 25 lM was 1.6 – 0.10 · 10- 4 cm/sec. Results suggest high absorption potential of glyceollin by a passive-diffusion-dominated mechanism. A sulfate conjugate at the phenolic hydroxyl position was observed following exposure to Caco-2 cells. In contrast to verapamil inhibition of the net secretory permeability of rhodamine 123 (R123) and its enhancement of calcein AM uptake into Caco-2 cells, neither glyceollin nor genistein inhibited Pgp (MDR1; ABCB1) up to 300 lM. There was no significant change in MDR1 mRNA expression, Pgp protein expression, or R123 transport in cells exposed to glyceollin or genistein for 24 h up to 100 lM. Collectively, these results suggest that glyceollin has the potential to be well absorbed, but that, similar to the isoflavone genistein, its absorption may be reduced substantially by intestinal metabolism; further, they indicate that glyceollin does not appear to alter Pgp function in Caco-2 cells.

      • From Multimedia Data Mining to Multimedia Big Data Mining

Constantin, Gradinaru Bogdanel,Mirela, Danubianu,Luminita, Barila Adina International Journal of Computer ScienceNetwork S 2022 International journal of computer science and netw Vol.22 No.11

With the collection of huge volumes of text, image, audio, video or combinations of these, in a word multimedia data, the need to explore them in order to discover possible new, unexpected and possibly valuable information for decision making was born. Starting from the already existing data mining, but not as its extension, multimedia mining appeared as a distinct field with increased complexity and many characteristic aspects. Later, the concept of big data was extended to multimedia, resulting in multimedia big data, which in turn attracted the multimedia big data mining process. This paper aims to survey multimedia data mining, starting from the general concept and following the transition from multimedia data mining to multimedia big data mining, through an up-to-date synthesis of works in the field, which is a novelty, from our best of knowledge.
