What Happened to the Colour Revolutions? Authoritarian Responses from Former Soviet Spaces

Donnacha Ó Beacháin,Abel Polese,Abel Polese 서울대학교 국제학연구소 2010 Journal of International and Area Studies Vol.17 No.2

In this paper we survey how colour revolutions have succeeded or failed in post communist spaces to identify the correlation between the attitude of the authorities, and their capacity to produce a backlash, and the failure of a colour revolution. By analysing the role of external forces in colour revolutions we explore problems associated with the export of democracy to post-socialist spaces, suggesting that colour revolutions have prompted a validation of actors, their performances and claims by the authorities that have then learned to use those techniques to challenge the opposition. This limited the effect of colour revolutions in the remaining countries.

Introduction: The Failure and Future of the Welfare State in Post-socialism

Abel Polese,Jeremy Morris,Borbála Kovács 한양대학교 아태지역연구센터 2015 Journal of Eurasian Studies Vol.6 No.1

Debates on the post-socialist welfare state evolved in two main directions. While some scholars have maintained that they would eventually converge with Western European patterns, some others have pointed at the need of a more ‘particularist’ approach, seeking to demonstrate that post-socialist states might follow a different and non-traditional path, individually or as a region in terms of welfare provision. Our current work is an attempt to contribute to the debate on the direction of post-socialist welfare state adaptation by engaging with corruption and welfare state/public sector failure in post-socialist spaces. In particular, emphasis is put on the tactics and strategies used by public workers and citizens to cope with incomplete and inadequate public social welfare provision. Rooted in different disciplinary schools, and making use of diverse methodological and theoretical approaches, the papers of this special issue provide further evidence to rechart the relationship between the public welfare sector, citizens and the current economic transition, a commonality that allows us to point at alternatives to the capitalist model that for some time has been seen as the only option. In line with our previous works, in this special issue we explore the possibility that informality and formality are complementary or that informality may ‘replace’ formal processes and structures. In other words, where the welfare state does not penetrate, welfare might be spread also through informal channels and it might redefine the very dynamics underpinning of a society.

A General Decision-Theorestic Model for a Couple's Family Building Process

        Abel, Volker 한국경영과학회 1982 韓國經營科學會誌 Vol.7 No.1

During the course of history, more and more reliable birth control methods have become available. Hence, to a certain degree, the possibility of avoiding any of additional children, and of spacing the family building process has arisen. The advancement of sex predetermin ation technology, whereby couples can influence the sex of their children, gives couple, we present a general decision-theoretic maximizing the expected utility concerning the spacing, ordering, sex, and number of their children.

      • Advanced Monitoring of Cold Chain Logistics using WSN and Sensor Cloud Infrastructure

        Abel Avitesh Chandra,Kyungho Kim,Seongpyo Kim,Seong Ro Lee 한국정보통신학회 2014 2016 INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE Vol.6 No.1

The IoT (Internet of Things) is a scenario where objects and things are provided with unique identifiers and the ability to automatically transfer data over network without assistance from humans and computers. The internet based automation is now possible with low cost computing devices such as Arduino, Raspberry Pi and other RF networks. Integration of sensor networks to the sensor cloud simplifies the system operation, maintenance, reduces cost and increases the visibility of data. This paper proposes a system for monitoring temperature and humidity of cold chain logistics by Arduino wireless sensor network and Xively sensor cloud for the Internet of Things era.

      • On the Determination of Flow Stress Using Bulge Test and Mechanical Measurement

        Abel D. Santos,Pedro Teixeira,A. Barata da Rocha,F. Barlat 한국소성가공학회 2010 기타자료 Vol.2010 No.6

The standard uniaxial tensile test is a widely accepted method to obtain relevant properties of sheet metal materials. These fundamental parameters can be used in numerical modeling of sheet forming operations to predict and assess formability and failure analysis. However the range of strain obtained from tensile test is limited and therefore if one will need further information on material behavior, extrapolation of tensile data is performed. The bulge test is an alternative to obtain ranges of deformation higher than tensile test, thus being possible to obtain non-extrapolated data for material behavior. Several methods may be used to obtain stress-strain data from bulge test, but a common concept is behind them, which needs the measurement of bulge pressure, curvature of bulge specimen, its thickness at the pole and the application of membrane theory. Concerning such measurements, optical methods are being used recently but classical mechanical methods are still an alternative with its own strengths. This paper presents the use and development of a mechanical measuring system to be incorporated in a hydraulic bulge test for flow curve determination, which permits real-time data acquisition under controlled strain rates up to high levels of plastic deformation. Numerical simulations of bulge test using FEM are performed and a sensitivity analysis is done for some influencing variables used in measurements, thus giving some directions in the design and use of the experimental mechanical system. Also, first experimental results are presented, showing an efficient testing procedure method for real time data acquisition with a stable evaluation of the flow curve.

      • Elimination of MMC Differential Currents via a feedback LTI control system

        Abel Ferreira,Rodrigo Teixeira-Pinto,Oriol Gomis-Bellmunt,Miquel Teixido 전력전자학회 2015 ICPE(ISPE)논문집 Vol.2015 No.6

The interesting features of the modular multilevel converter makes it the VSC solution of choice by the manufactures in the HVDC field. Far more complex than the older VSC solutions, the MMC generates less harmonics and losses. One of its drawbacks is that, internally, this topology creates a double line frequency current component which flows between phases. This work describes the origin of the double line frequency current and presents, step-by-step stationary reference frame circulating current suppress controller (S-CCSC) as a feedback linear time invariant (LTI) control to cancel out this source of additional losses. The proposed S-CCSC solution was compared to the previously proposed 2ω rotating reference frame CCSC (R-CCSC). Both solutions show very fast results, removing almost instantaneously the second harmonic current without leaving any evidence of them in steady state. Moreover, the LTI solution is demonstrated to demand 33% less computational time, which is a clear advantage from a practical application perspective.

A Note on the Optimum Character of One-Sided Sequential Probability Ratio Tests

Abel, Volker The Korean Operations Research and Management Scie 1984 韓國經營科學會誌 Vol.9 No.2

We Observe a sequence of i. i. d random variables with density f or g. Only if g is true we should stop the process. Hence. the testing problem is completely described by a stopping time. Among all stopping times with error probability of first kind not exceeding a given bound, the one-sided sequential probability ratio test has smallest expected sample size if g is true. Moreover, the generalized one-sided SPRT has smallest expected sample size for g in the class of stopping times with expected sample size under f not falling below a given bound.

      • A Case Study of Small-Scale Farmer`S Participation in Nigeria Agricultural Development Programmes: Oyo and Osun State Agricultural Development Programmes

( Abel Babalola Ogunwale ) 한국농촌경제연구원 2005 Journal of Rural Development Vol.28 No.1

The study examined the socio-economic characteristics of small-scale farmers that were participating in Oyo and Osun States` Agricultural Development programmes. Reasons for participation and activities in which they had participated were investigated. Data were collected from 120 randomly selected registered farmers in the two programmes. Frequency counts, percentages and chi-square analysis were used in data analysis. Majority of the sampled farmers were illiterates, but had many years of farming experience. Procurement of fertilizers at cheaper rate, easy accessibility to farm information, new crop varieties, new methods of farming, tractors and implements hiring were some of the reasons for participation. Farmers participated in the following programme activities, agricultural meetings, demonstrations, fortnightly training meetings, purchasing farm inputs and listening to radio agricultural programmes. Age of farmers had a positive and significant relationship with total number of activities in which farmers had participated.

Protecting the tracheal tube cuff: a novel solution

Abel, Adam,Behrman, David A.,Samuels, Jon D. The Korean Dental Society of Anesthsiology 2021 Journal of Dental Anesthesia and Pain Medicine Vol.21 No.2

We describe the successful insertion of a nasotracheal tube following repeated cuff rupture. The patient was a 55-year-old woman with a history of nasal trauma and multiple rhinoplasties, who underwent elective Lefort I osteotomy and bilateral sagittal split osteotomy for correction of skeletal facial deformity. During fiberoptic bronchoscope-guided nasal intubation after the induction of general anesthesia, the tracheal tube repeatedly ruptured in both nares, despite extensive preparation of the nasal airways. We covered the cuff with a one-inch tape, intubated to the level of the oropharynx, pulled the tracheal tube out through the mouth, and removed the tape. The tracheal tube was then backed out to the level of the uvula, and was successfully advanced.
