        Investigation on the Functional Properties of Chestnut Flours and Their Potential Utilization in Low-fat Cookies

        Chestnut flours (CFs) were produced from 3 chestnut samples (Aydin, Kutahya, and Bursa) by 2 different methods (boiled and oven-dried: BOD-CF and freeze-dried: FD-CF). Functional properties and effects of CF addition (10, 20, and 30%) on the qualities of regular and low-fat cookie were investigated. The freeze drying significantly increased water solubility of CFs but decreased their water binding capacity. The emulsion capacity and stability of FD-CFs were higher than those of BOD-CFs. At pH 4, 6, 8, and 10 FD-CFs had better gelation properties. Spread ratio (SR) values of BOD-CF supplemented regular or low-fat cookies decreased with increasing CF levels. Hardness values of CF supplemented regular cookies were generally lower compared to control. SR and hardness values of FD-CF supplemented cookies were higher than those of BOD-CF supplemented ones. Surface colors of the cookies were darker with FD-CF addition as compared to BODCF addition. In low-fat cookies, the sample supplemented with 10% Kutahya FD-CF had the highest taste-flavor value. FDCF supplementation generally resulted in higher appearance and taste-flavor scores than BOD-CF supplementation in cookies.

      • MaaS: CONTEMPORARY APPROACHES IN TRANSPORTATION IN 21ST CENTURY

        Over the past years, Mobility-as-a-Service (MaaS) concept has been frequently pronounced around the world. By putting the users at the center, MaaS aims to solve the first and last mile problem together with sustainable mobility solutions. As a nascent system, MaaS has integrated various elements and brought multiple actors together. In addition to different types of MaaS models, all of them aims to shift from car ownership to shared sustainable mobility. Considering its short history and increasing popularity as a hot topic, there are lots of unknowns to be explored and lots of opportunities for MaaS actors in the future mobility. This study provides better understanding of MaaS by relating its past, present and future development, and suggests future directions for realizing MaaS.

        Orthognathic treatment of facial asymmetry due to temporomandibular joint ankylosis

        The aim of this study was to present a case series of the orthognathic treatment of facial asymmetry due to temporomandibular joint (TMJ) ankylosis and to characterize the current treatment modalities through a literature review. Four patients who presented with facial asymmetry due to TMJ ankylosis between 2010 and 2014 were included in this study. TMJ ankylosis was surgically treated before bimaxillary surgery with advancement genioplasty in some of the cases. In 2 cases, 3-dimensional (3D) models were used for diagnosis and treatment planning, as 3D models are very important tools for planning surgical maneuvers. Aesthetically pleasant facial symmetry and a good facial profile were obtained in all the cases.

      • Electrochemical treatment of cefalexin with Sb-doped SnO<sub>2</sub> anode: Anode characterization and parameter effects

        In this study, it was aimed to evaluate direct oxidation of aqueous solution containing cefalexin antibiotic with new generation Sn/Sb/Ni: 500/8/1 anode. The fact that there is no such a study on treatment of cefalexin with these new anode made this study unique. According to the operating parameters evaluation COD graphs showed clearer results compared to TOC and CLX and thus, it was it was chosen as major parameter. Furthermore, pseudo-first degree kd values were calculated from CLX results to show more accurate and specific results. Experimental results showed that after 60 min of electrochemical oxidation, complete removal of COD and TOC was accomplished with 750 mg L<sup>-1</sup> KCl, at pH 7, 50 mA cm<sup>-2</sup> current density and 1 cm anode-cathode distance. Also, the stability of the Sn/Sb/Ni anode was evaluated by taking SEM and AFM images and XRD analysis before and after of electrochemical oxidation processes. According to the results, it was not occurred too much change on the anode surface even after 300 h of electrolysis. Thus, it was thought that the anode material was not corroded to a large extent. Furthermore, the removal efficiencies were very high for almost all the time and conditions. According to the results of the study, electrochemical oxidation with new generation Sn/Sb/Ni anodes for the removal of cefalexin antibiotic was found very successful and applicable due to require less reaction time complete mineralization and doesn't require pH adjustment step compared to other studies in literature. In future studies, different antibiotic types should be studied with this anode and maybe with real wastewaters to test applicability of the process in treatment of pharmaceutical wastewaters containing antibiotics, in a better way.

        805 nm Mediated Upconversion Luminescence Properties of Yb3Ga5O12:Ln (Er3+/Nd3+) Nanoparticles

        This paper presents the near infrared and visible upconversion of Yb3Ga5O12 garnet samples. The samples were doped with two different dopants (either Er3+ or Nd3+) and excited with 805 nm. Intense infrared emission was observed with the Nd3+ doped sample and relatively weak visible blue-green and red emissions were observed for both the Er3+ and Nd3+ doped samples. The infrared emission intensities for the Nd3+ doped sample was found to increase with the increase in the Nd3+ ion concentration while that of the Er3+ ion decreases with the increasing Er3+ ion concentration. Also, to ascertain the back energy transfer from the Yb3+ ion to Nd3+, the samples were excited with a 980 nm source. No visible or infrared emission was observed for the Nd3+ doped sample indicating the absence of the back energy transfer. The luminescence properties of the sample signifies its readiness for application in biological imaging and laser generators.

      • Active School Travel in istanbul: environmental factors influencing walking as mode of access to/from school

        The aim of this study is to determine builtand social environmental factors shaping walking as mode of access to/from school. Within this scope, randomly selected 6th, 7th, and 8th grade students (ages 12-14) from 20 secondary schools (N=1954) in Istanbul, Turkey were asked to complete questionnaires that asked for their full address, age, primary mode of commuting to school, and if not actively commuting, the perceived barriers to active school travel (AST). Those walking to school were asked to draw their typical route on a map. Their parents (N=1118) were also asked to report the primary reasons for disallowing their children to walk, along with their socio-economic characteristics. Walkability of home-environments (800mt buffers) was measured through a syntactic connectivity measure: global Integration. The findings show that increased home-neighbourhood walkability is associated with increased AST rates between home and school, considering the interaction between walkability, income and education. The results of questionnaires indicate that there is consensus between students’ and parents’ perceived barriers to walking. For both groups the primary builtenvironment factor obstructing walking is the distance between home and school while the primary social environmental factor is the perception of neighbourhood crime (deserted streets). Furthermore, some students reported that they are willing to walk to/from school, but that their parents would not allow them. This finding supports the argument that the main factor in shaping walking behaviour among children is parental perceptions of the neighbourhood environment. Hence, attempting to change parental perceptions through pedestrian-oriented design interventions is crucial in promoting AST.

        Investigation of human papillomavirus prevalence in married women and molecular characterization and phylogenetic analysis of the virus

        ObjectiveHuman papillomaviruses (HPVs) are among the agents responsible for infection and cancer of the skin and mucousmembranes in the human body. The aim of this study was to investigate the frequency and type distribution of HPVsin married female patients with gynecological complaints, who had visited the Maternity Hospital in Erzurum, Turkey. MethodsIn this study, 263 cervical swab samples were taken from married women using the Pap smear method and wereinvestigated for positive reactivity against HPV. The L1 gene region of HPV was investigated using molecular methods. For this purpose, polymerase chain reaction (PCR) assays and sequence analysis of positive samples were performed. Phylogenetic analyses were performed using a bioinformatics approach after sequencing. ResultsHPV-DNA was detected in 17 (6.5%) samples. Highest positive reactivity to HPV-DNA was found in the 35–44 agegroup at 9.2%. Fourteen out of seventeen positive samples were included in the phylogenetic analysis. All isolatesclustered in the Alphapapillomavirus genus. Six samples were found to be HPV 70 positive, four were HPV 16 positive,and the rest were HPV 54, 72, 81, and 114 positive. When genotyping data were evaluated according to the riskgroup, we found that 28.6% of the 14 samples were found to be high risk-HPV, and 71.4% were low risk-HPV. ConclusionAs per our knowledge, this is the first report on the phylogenetic analysis of HPV genotypes isolated from women inTurkey. The prevalence of low- and-high risk HPV was determined in married women in Erzurum, and these resultscontribute to the epidemiological data on the distribution of HPV types for this region.

        Design, modelling and experimentation of a novel compliant translational dwell mechanism

        A partially compliant novel translational double dwell mechanism is presented in this article. The designed mechanism consists of initially straight and preloaded pinned-pinned compliant links, rigid crank, slider-rail system and a DC motor. Slider doesn’t move until the critical buckling load is achieved and then snaps to its maximum and returns back to initial position as the crank completes a full rotation. Motion behavior of elastic members depending on the geometry and loading are investigated using Elastica theory. Kinematic analysis and dynamical model are obtained by representing the compliant pinned-pinned members as translational springs using polynomial formulation method. Mechanism behavior is also analyzed in Adams FlexView. Mechanism is built by 3D printing the flexible parts using polylactic acid (PLA). Displacement of the slider along with the deformation of buckling beams are recorded and deflection shapes are detected by machine vision measurement while the crank is subjected to complete rotation. Slider position is also recorded by a laser displacement sensor. Dynamical model results are validated by the experimental setup, machine vision measurement and Adams simulations.
