Fragility parameter m, derived from the thermo-viscoelasticity measurements, was used to characterize the strength and fracture toughness of nano- and micron-silica particles/epoxy composites. Bisphenol epoxy resin was reinforced with varied composition ratio of 240-㎚ and 1.56-㎛ silica particles under a constant volume fraction of total particles, 0.30. The m of the composites was dependent on the particle composition ratio ΦSP. Also both strength and fracture toughness of the composites was found to be definitely dependent on its fragility related to heterogeneity in epoxy matrix due to addition of nanoparticles. From results, we clearly found that the fragility was effective parameter to evaluate the strength and fracture toughness of epoxy composites reinforced with bi-dispersion of nano- and micron-silica particles as well as to explain its nanoparticle’s effects.
