인간의 최초의 타락은 하느님에 대한 불복종에서 시작했다. 인간의 불복종의 시초는 이브였다. 그래서 아담과 이브의 관계를 생각하지 않으면 안된다. 이브에게 아담은 전부였고, 아담 또한 이브가 전부였다. 여기에 사탄이 이용할 수 있는 여지를 주었다. 사탄의 목적은 인간으로 하여금 하느님에 대한 복종을 파기하는 것이었다. 그래서 사탄은 이브로 하여금 죄의식을 잃게 하고, 그녀로 하여금 천국의 삶을 동경하고 또 하느님과 동등해 질 수 있다는 말의 유혹을 벌인다. 이로인해 이브는 하느님의 말을 지키고 뱀의 말을 따르는 어떠한 선택의 의식을 가질 수 없게 되었다. 아담 또한 타당한 이성의 범주를 넘어서게 되고, 두 사람 사이의 열정에 굴복하면서 불복종을 낳게 되었다. 그러나 두 사람은 하느님에 대한 불복종으로 타락은 했다 하더라도 이브는 아담의 사랑을 확신하므로 해서 이브가 악마적 성격에서 벗어날 수 있었다. 그래서 이브는 다시금 하느님에 대한 두려움을 없애고 믿음에 의한 지혜를 찬미하게 된다. 이 때 지혜는 하느님에 대한 복종에서만 얻어지는 것이 되고, 죽음의 도래도 믿지 않게 된다. 비록 이브가 인간세계에서 사탄에 의한 최초의 희생자일지라도 이 시의 저자인 밀턴은 아담과 이브가 스스로 불복종으로 이르게 하고 있고 시적 전개 또한 시인의 섬세한 표현으로 훌륭히 구사하고 있다. 특히 타락의 과정에서 여러 가지 중요한 요소를 잘 다루고 있다. 그래서 이브가 사탄의 유혹에 의해 타락에 이르게 되었지만, 마침내 이브는 죽음 대신 생명의 삶을 느끼게 되었다.

Paradise Lost에 나타난 Milton의 God와 Son의 견해

I, personally, completely believe in Milton's view and representation of God and Son in Paradise Lost. In my view, he is far from a heretic; he is the most orthodox of writers. But we can criticise the literary values and artistry of the description of the heavenly world where Milton's faith, to wit, Christ's love revealed to him, is expressed. God did not assume any apparent preventive measures against Satan's guile because he needed not do so. He created man above Satan's guile. But he did not make man mechanically proof against evil. In this sense man is a perfect creature. Therefore man is free to remain right or fall into evil. Mere the idea of freedom is the central theological concern in this poem. Freedom and obedience are coordinated conceptions. Obedience, however, is meaningful only in freedom. In relation to this point, God's love sweetly cannot be emphasised to much in the salvation of man. In other sense, God's grace softness the stony heart of Adam and Eve, and lets them recognize their sinful existence, leading them to prayer, repentance and obedience. To be obedient means to follow conscience. Here Milton insists on the choice of individuals. All people are given enough grace to be saved. But the question of who is saved is complex. According to Milton and the Old Testament, I dare conclude God prepared a way to salvation besides that of Christ.
