Vol.2 No.2

This research looks back to the time in history when the foundation on the futures studies was established in South Korea. The Korean Society of Future Studies was first established in 1968 and the research on the field has been going on for nearly half a century. However, I wanted to know why future studies haven’t seen a visible development here in Korea despite of its long history. This research focuses on analyzing what people interested in futures studies have done throughout the years. The elementary tool used on the analysis was newspaper articles. To cover the limit of analyzing newspapers articles, I have also utilized the big data text-mining method as well as focus interviews. According to the research analysis, the start of Korea’s futures studies was in 1967. In the following year, the Korean Society of Future Studies was launched. This society expanded the realm of futures studies here in Korea through exchanges with other futures studies societies overseas such as the U.S. and Japan. By the early 1970s, those participating in the societies were dedicated to their studies and they were academic and thorough, which even stands out until today. But since then, the research on the field enters recession for a long period of time. At that time, it seemed that South Korea didn’t have the leisure to study on futures unlike the advanced western countries. The Korean national in-come per capita in early 1960s was less than $100. As preeminent futurist Herman Kahn has once said that Korea should keep up with the advanced economies like that of the U.S., it was believed that it needed a compressed growth under strong leadership. When analyzing the newspaper articles during the Yushin regime and the Chun Doo-hwan administration, at least Korea’s futures studies shows such trends. The futures studies at that time was not led by Korea itself but it just followed the visions set by advanced economies like the U.S., Japan and Europe and then reflected it in its vision for the 2000s and was busy trying to follow it. However, Korea’s futures studies, which were heavily dependent to the western economies, started to show signs of changes as the country has entered the 21st century. Although it didn’t continue those changes with persistence, futures studies research centers started to pop up and related classes with degrees started to be established in colleges. However, there is a lack of understanding on the idea of futures studies among opinion leaders. There have been those who only used future studies as a garnish to their writings or rationality. Yet, there are progresses underway. Each year, articles on futures studies are growing in number. Additionally, those who are studying futures studies in hopes of building the future through strategy rather than out of pure simple curiosity are growing as well.

A Pilot Study of Brief Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing(EMDR) for Treatment of Acute Phase Schizophrenia

        김대호,최준호,김석현,오동훈,박선철,이선혜,Kim, Daeho,Choi, Joonho,Kim, Seok Hyeon,Oh, Dong Hoon,Park, Seon-Cheol,Lee, Sun Hye The Korean Society of Biological Psychiatry 2010 생물정신의학 Vol.17 No.2

Objectives : Eye movement desensitization and reprocessing(EMDR) is a novel, time-limited psychotherapy originally developed for treatment of psychological trauma. The effectiveness of this therapy has been validated only for posttraumatic stress disorder ; however, EMDR is often applied to other psychiatric illnesses, including other anxiety disorders and depression. This pilot study tested the efficacy of EMDR added to the routine treatment for individuals with acute stage schizophrenia. Methods : This study was conducted in the acute psychiatric care unit of a university-affiliated training hospital. Inpatients diagnosed with schizophrenia were randomly assigned to either three sessions of EMDR, three sessions of progressive muscle relaxation(PMR) therapy, or only treatment as usual(TAU). All the participants received concurrent typical treatments(TAU), including psychotropic medication, individual supportive psychotherapy and group activities in the psychiatric ward. The Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale(PANSS), the Hamilton Depression Rating Scale and the Hamilton Anxiety Rating Scale were administered by a clinical psychologist who was blinded to the patients' group assignment. Results : Forty-five patients enrolled and forty patients(89%) completed the post-treatment evaluation. There were no between-group differences in the withdrawal rates of patients during the treatment or at the three-month follow-up session. All three groups improved significantly across each of the symptomatic domains including schizophrenia, anxiety, and depressive symptoms. However, a repeated measures ANOVA revealed no significant differences among the groups over time. Effect size for change in total PANSS scores was also similar across treatment conditions, but effect size for negative symptoms was large for EMDR(0.60 for EMDR, 0.39 for PMR and 0.21 for TAU only). Conclusion : These findings supported the use of EMDR in treating the acute stage of schizophrenia but the results failed to confirm the effectiveness of the treatment over the two control conditions in three sessions. Further studies with longer courses of treatment, more focused target dimensions of treatment, and a sample of outpatients are necessary.

Vol.11 No.2

Over the last decade, EMDR(Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) has emerged as a promising new treatment for trauma and other anxiety-based disorders. However, neurobiological mechanism of EMDR has not been well understood. Authors report SPECT findings of two patients of PTSD before and after EMDR. Brain 99mTc-ECD-SPECT was performed before and after EMDR treatment. To evaluate the significance of changes in the regional cerebral perfusion, t-test was conducted on the resulting images using SPM99. In addition, clinical scales(CAPS, CGI, STAI) were employed to asses the changes in the clinical symptoms of the patients. After EMDR treatment, each showed significant improvement in clinical symptoms. The cerebral perfusion increased in bilateral dorsolateral prefrontal cortex, and decreased in the temporal association cortex. The differences in the cerebral perfusion between patients after treatment and normal controls decreased. These changes appeared mainly in the limbic area the and the prefrontal cortex. These results suggest that EMDR may show the therapeutic effect through 1) improvement in the emotional control by increased activity in the prefrontal cortex, 2) inhibited hyperstimuli on amygdala by deactivation of the association cortex, 3) inhibition on past trauma related memory, and 4) keeping the functional balance between the limbic area and the prefrontal cortex. This case report needs further replication from studies with larger sample.

Vol.14 No.4

Recent researches have shown that important cellular-based autoprotective mechanisms are mediated by heat-shock proteins(HSPs), also called 'molecular chaperones'. HSPs as molecular chaperones are the primary cellular defense mechanism against damage to the proteome, initiating refolding of denatured proteins and regulating degradation after severe protein damage. HSPs also modulate multiple events within apoptotic pathways to help sustain cell survival following damaging stimuli. HSPs are induced by almost every type of stresses including physical and psychological stresses. Our nervous system in the brain are more vulnerable to stress and damage than any other tissues due to HSPs insufficiency. The normal function of HSPs is a key factor for endogenous stress adaptation of neural tissues. HSPs play an important role in the process of neurodevelopment, neurodegeneration, and neuroendocrine regulation. The altered function of HSPs would be associated with the development of several neuropsychiatric disorders. Therefore, an understanding of HSPs activities could help to improve autoprotective mechanism of our neural system. This paper will review the literature related to the significance of HSPs in neuropsychiatric field.

Vol.13 No.1

Object : To evaluate how the therapeutic factors affect post-discharge course of patients with schizophrenia, we analyzed relationship between each therapeutic factor and outcome of inpatients with schizophrenia in Hanyang University Hospital. Methods : This study is a retrospective report. Subjects were schizophrenic inpatients who were discharged from Hanyang University Hospital from January 1, 2003 through December 31, 2004. We obtained demographic and clinical data from review of inpatient and outpatient charts. Results : We analyzed the records of 104 patients with schizophrenia(44 males and 60 females). Patients who had longer first admission days have fewer number of readmission. There were no significant correlation between psychiatric rehabilitation and course of schizophrenia. Courses, such as duration of outpatient department follow-up and number and duration of rehospitalization, did not differ according to the existence of extrapyramidal symptoms or types of antipsychotics prescribed. Conclusion : Among the therapeutic factors, longer duration of the first admission only affected better post-discharge course of patients with schizophrenia.
