Vol.22 No.1
The purpose of this research is to examine what actually happens in the beginning of the journey of becoming music therapy supervisors by looking into the introductory supervisory experiences of three novice music therapy supervisors, using a relatively new qualitative research method, collaborative auto-ethnography. Audio records of onsite supervision, supervisor’s logs, and written memos from supervision of supervision were used as main data of the study. The analysis of the data showed that the novice supervisors experienced various difficulties including performance anxiety, competence anxiety, and insecurities due to counter-transferences. However, through in-depth self-reflect, and consistent supervision of supervision they also owned growth experience such as establishment of professional philosophy, approach and identity as a supervisor. This research was interpreted from various perspectives by providing researchers experiences with artistic materials. The data were interpreted and analyzed with various perspectives by providing researchers self-reflective artistic experiences. The results of this research will facilitate deeper understandings of development process of novice music therapy supervisors.
Vol.7 No.1
This study explored the process in which a music therapist, who lost her father in adolescence, seeks personal and professional growth by healing and reflecting on her traumas. To this end, this study analyzed and identified the occupational development process of the author, based on the methodology of art-based research and auto-ethnography. The findings are as follows: First, the author experienced the death of father in her adolescence, the time when her self-identity was formed. This traumatic event of bereavement in adolescence made the author oppress rather than - openly express feelings and adapt to external situations. This not only delays grieving, but also affects adolescents’ sense of self-identity. Second, the author expressed long-oppressed feelings of sorrow, guilt, anger, and anxiety from her paternal bereavement in the process of this research. This is the first stage of grieving and the most crucial element in the grieving process. Third, the author reviewed her personal and professional growth through the process of healing from bereavement. The author perceives ‘post-traumatic growth’ at personal level and counter-transference at professional level, demonstrating the developmental experience as “a wounded healer” who can provide profound empathy based on sensitivity on self-reflection. This study is significance in that it presented the first-hand experience of the author according to the dual process of coping, theorized by Stroebe and Schut (1999); it also discussed the meaning of self-reflection as a music therapist and a wounded healer, as well as vivid insight into the developmental process of a therapist.
