새만금 간척지 첨단온실 에너지 설계를 위한 풍환경 및 온실 피복재의 영향 분석

본 연구에서는 새만금과 같은 간척지를 활용하여 대규모 첨단온실단지를 조성하는 경우 간척지의 환경적 특수성 중 높은 풍속에 따른 유리 단열재의 에너지 효율을 평가하였다. 현장에서 주로 사용되는 온실 단열재 중 4가지에 대한 평가 결과, 최대 37.4%의 에너지 차이를 보여, 온실 피복재의 선정이 중요함을 제시하였다. 이를 바탕으로 일반적인 내륙에서의 온실을 설계하는 것과 달리, 간척지에서는 내재해성 온실규격을 따라 시설을 설계하여야 하며, 에너지 소비량은 높아진 풍속과 재질을 고려하여 산정되어야 한다. 본 연구의 결과는 에너지 효율성을 온실 피복재의 종류와 풍속에 따라서 제시하고 있으며, 이는 대규모 첨단온실 조성 시 에너지 소비량을 예측하고, 이를 바탕으로 신재생에너지원을 포함하는 에너지 설계에 활용될 수 있다. The external weather conditions including temperature and wind speed in the Saemangeum reclaimed land is different from that of the inland, affecting the internal environment of the greenhouse. Therefore, it is important to select an appropriate covering material considering the insulation effect according to the type and characteristics of the covering material considering the weather condition in the Saemangeum reclaimed land. A hexahedral insulation chamber was designed to evaluate the insulation efficiency of each glass-clad material in the outside weather condition in reclaimed land. In order to evaluate the insulation effect of each covering material, a radiator was installed and real-time power consumption was monitored. 16-mm PC (polycarbonate), 16-mm PMMA (polymethyl methacrylate), 4-mm greenhouse glass, and 16-mm double-layered glass were used as the covering materials of the chamber. In order to understand the effect of the external wind directions, the windward and downwind insulation properties were evaluated. As a result of comparing the thermal insulation effect of each greenhouse cover material to single-layer glass, the thermal insulation effect of double-layer glass was 16.9% higher, while PMMA and PC were 62.5% and 131.2% higher respectively. On average the wind speed on the windward side was 53.1% higher than that on the lee-wind side, and the temperature difference between the inside and outside of the chamber at the wind ward side was found to be 52.0% larger than that on the lee ward side. During the experiment period, the overall heating operation time for PC was 39.2% lower compared to other insulation materials. Showing highest energy efficiency, and compared to PC, single-layer glass power consumption was 37.4% higher.

This is one of the critical essays of my serial on-going project with a view to reviewing the existing English translations of Korean poems by prominent Korean poets ― Seo Jungju, Ko Un, and Shin Kyongrim, in this essay ― and suggesting my own. Although the existing English translations have been made by English-speaking scholars, who came to Korea in their youth, and being enamored of Korean literature, try their best with keen interest in and wide knowledge of Korean literature to render Korean poems into English, misunderstanding or insufficient understanding of the poems per se as well as misreading of the Korean words and expressions are found under scrutiny. In this respect, leaving this task of translation entirely up to the English-speaking foreigners is to be reconsidered, and Korean nationals who have the ear and sensibility for poetry should take part in this task with sincerer responsibility and zeal.

This is the second essay following the first one, which reviews the English translations of the poems of Seo Jungju, a representative contemporary Korean poet, by prominent foreign translators. Pointing out not only their errors and misunderstanding of Korean phrases but also their insufficient grasp of the meaning and themes of the poems, I try to put forth better translations of my own.

This is a critical essay exploring the problems of translation through the actual cases of two prominent English and American translators, Brother Anthony and David McCann, who are well known for translating modern and contemporary Korean poets’ works. This essay reviews and compares their translations of works by Seo Jungju, Ko Un and Shin Kyongrim, who represent contemporary Korean poetry and also appeal to Westerners most. Pointing out not only the errors and awkward expressions but misunderstanding and insufficient grasp of the meaning of the poems in these translations, this essay offers alternative possibilites for revision and improvement. The problem of translation is centered around the issues of faithfulness and readability. Benjamin suggests a third realm beyond these two, which we have yet to attain with much effort. Yet there is another significant problem of translation reflecting interrelationship between two different cultures. Collaboration between a native literary scholar and a foreign translator is one way of closing the cultural gap between the original and translated texts. Here, it is important for the critical input of native literary scholars to be actively reflected in the translation process.

Background: Churg-Strauss syndrome is a rare systemic disorder characterized by bronchial asthma, hypereosinophilia and systemic vasculitis. The prevalence and severity of renal involvement in patients with Churg-Strauss syndrome is not well known. We report a rare case of a patient with Churg- Strauss syndrome accompanied by acute renal failure. Case History: A 52-year-old woman with skin rash and generalized edema was admitted to our hospital via the emergency room. She had a 7-year history of bronchial asthma and allergic rhinitis. Laboratory evaluation showed marked eosinophilia, elevated creatinine, and heavy proteinuria. She was positive for anti-neutrophil cytoplasmic antibody. Computed tomography of chest and paranasal sinuses revealed pulmonary infiltration and pansinusitis. Peripheral neuropathy was confirmed and small vasculitis was noted in a skin biopsy specimen. Results: She was diagnosed with Churg-Strauss syndrome and showed rapidly progressive renal insufficiency despite systemic corticosteroid administration. Oilguria was aggravated, and hemodialysis was thereafter started. Despite 2 weeks of continuous hemodialysis, her renal function was not improved. Conclusion: We report a rare case of Churg-Strauss syndrome associated with acute renal failure. A long-term follow- up is needed in Churg-Strauss syndrome patients.
