The pyrimidy1 derivative of 2'-deoxythmidine 5'-monophosphate, 3 has been synthesized for the development of anticanncer agents. The compound 3 derived from prototype inhibitor 2 by modifying the p-aminobenzoy1 glutamic acid portion has been designed to facilitate the membrane penetration. Variable temperature $^1H$ NMR spectrum for the protected nucleotide has indicated the existence of two conformers which are stable on the NMR time scale at ambient temperature.

Four flavonoids were isolated from the aerial parts of Euphorbia ebracteolata. On the basis of chemical and spectroscopic evidence, the structures of these compounds were established as $quercetin-3-O-{\beta}-D-glucoside$(isoquercitrin)(I), quercetin-3-O-rutinoside(rutin)(II), kaempferol-3-O-rutinoside(III) and $quercetin-3-O-(2'-O-galloyl)-{\beta}-D-glucoside$(IV) which was the main flavonoidal component in this plant. The isolation of flavonoids from E. ebracteolata is the first example.

A series of substituted benzylthioalkanamidocephalosporins 3a-3p were synthesized and tested in vitro antibacterial activity. Of these new cephalosporins exhibited good antibacterial activity against Gram-positive bacteria whereas none of the compounds possessed the activity against Gram-negative bacteria at the concentration tested.

A series of S-(2-methyl-2-alkylindanyl)cyclohexane-1,3-diones were synthesized and evaluated for herbicidal activities in a green house. Under submerged paddy conditions, those compounds showed high herbicidal activity against barnyardgrass with good tolerance on rice.

A series of N-{2,4-dichloro-5-(pyrazolyl)phenyl}imides 7 and 8 was prepared and evaluated their herbicidal activities. Those compounds in which either carboxylate or carboxamide moiety is on pyrazole moiety 7c-7l showed no herbicidal activity whereas, the compounds in which trifluoromethyl group is substituted in pyrazolyl moiety showed moderate herbicidal activities against barnyardgrass, monochria and flat-sedge under paddy conditions with good rice tolerance at rate 63-250 g/㏊

Six novel 5-substituted-1-[2-(3-methoxy-2-hydroxyphenyl)-l-methoxyethyl]uracils 2a-f were prepared by condensation of 2,4-bis(trimethylsilyloxy)-5-substituted uracils with 2,7-dimethoxy-2,3-dihydrobenzofuran (9) in the presence of Lewis acid. The 2,3-dihydrobenzofuran derivative 9 was obtained by intramolecular acetalization of 2-acetoxy-3-methoxyphenyl acetaldehyde (8) which was synthesized by oxidative cleavage of 1-allyl-2-acetoxy-3-methoxybenzene (7) using osmium tetroxide followed by NaIO4. Compounds 2a-f were evaluated for in vitro antiviral activity against HSV-1, HSV-2 and HRV. None of these compounds showed activity with ID50) values up to 100 mcg/ml except for 5-chlorouracil derivative 2d which exhibited antiviral activity against HSV-1 with ED50) 30 mcg/ml. In the antitumor activity against L1210 and P388 leukemia cell lines, 2d showed activity with ID50 values of 14 mcg/ml and 11.6 mcg/ml, and 2c with ID50 values of 22.9 mcg/ml and 8.8 mcg/ml, respectively.

Seven hydrolysable tannins and two related compounds have been isolated from the acetone-water(4:1) soluble portion of the aerial parts of Euphorbia ebracteolata(Euphorbiaceae). Seven hydrolysable tannins have been determined as 3-O-galloyl-shikimic acid, 1, 3, 4, 6-tetra-O- and 1, 2, 3, 4, 6-penta-O-galloyl-β-D-glucose, corilagin, tercatain, punicafolin and geraniin and two related compounds determined as gallic acid and ellagic acid on the basis of spectral data and physicochemical evidence.
