A 5 year old, 13kg, Jindo dogs was presented with clinical signs of anorexia, weakness and exercise intolerance, and diagnosed as dirofilariasis by hematology, blood chemistry and ultrasonography. In hematology and blood chemistry, the presence of microfilariae in the blood, anemia, leukocytosis, hemoglobinuria and jaundice were revealed. In ultrasonography, heartworms were found in the right ventricle artery and pulmonary artery as structures of hyperechoic dots or streaks. Because of the dog's poor physical status, the owner requested euthanasia. In autopsy, fifty odd of heartworms were ascertained in the right ventricle and pulmonary artery. Tricuspid valve in the orifice of right ventricle and right atrium, and chordae tendineae were deliquesced.

Pain modification is an important part of traditional acupuncture therapies. However, the idea of using acupuncture to alleviate pain has been greatly expanded in the last four decades. It has reached the level that acupuncture may be used as a substitute for conventional anesthesia. Surgical analgesia can be produced by methods involving peripheral or central stimulation, such as Acupuncture Analgesia (AA). The most common method is Electro-Acupuncture Analgesia (EAA). using a special electrostimulator attached to needles in acupuncture points. The major advantages of AA or EAA are its safety in high-risk patients and excellent post-operative pain relief, freedom from complications and enhanced healing which follows surgery under AA. The major disadvantages are the long induction period (10-40 minutes) and variable degrees of analgesia, even in skilled hands. The mechanisms of AA Involve stimulation of peripheral sensory nerve, spinal cord and supraspinal areas (thalamus, midbrain and hypothalamus) AA can be used effectively in dog. Acupuncture is used to treat pathological conditions and to prevent pain from arising. The pathological conditions that can be treated can be painless or painful conditions. Acupuncture analgesia (AA) is a specific form of acupuncture; the stimulation of the acupuncture points must be strong and long (about 15 to 30 minutes) before a local or general analgesia or hypalgesia will develop. Development of modern AA began in the late fifties. Effectiveness of acupuncture in alleviation of pain was quickly noticed and brought to the medical researchers and surgeons. Through their diligent pursuit, AA has been established as a viable alternative for relief of pain and substitution of conventional anesthesia. In veterinary medicine. early successful applications of AA to surgery of domestic animals were reported in the late sixties. Local or regional anesthesia is often preferred to general anesthesia in cattle. Acupuncture was effective in inducing analgesia. Regional electroacupuncture analgesia is potentially useful for standing surgeries in cattle. Some standing surgeries may be easily accomplished using electroacupuncture anesthesia.

Thirty dairy cows with pododermatitis were selected and treatment effect of ozone ointment for bovine pododermatitis was investigated. In addition, bactericidal effect of ozone ointment on etiological agent of bovine pododermatitis was evaluated. The pathohistological examination for the pododermatitis, according to application with ozone ointment was investigated. Thirty dairy cows were divided two groups: control group(vaseline group: 15 cows), treatment group(ozone ointment group: 15 cows). Various parameters were evaluated in terms of the lameness score, swelling score, lesion score, WBC, neutrophil, pathohistological finding, and antimicrobial action. As compared with vaseline group, ozone ointment group revealed significant decrease of lameness (p<O.05), swelling (p<O.O1) and lesion score (p<O.05) were shown in hoof lesions on 14 days after application. In hematological findings, WBC count revealed slightly high values within normal range before treatment, however, this was I Corresponding author improved on 14 days after application of ozone ointment. The number of neutrophils was slightly higher than that of normal, however. this was improved on 14 days after application of ozone ointment. In pathohistological findings, normal dermal tissue was found in tissues with pododermatitis on 14 days after application of ozone ointment. In antimicobial action, marked decrease rate of bacteria was observed in feet of all cases treated with ozone ointment. The decreasing rate of bacteria in anaerobic culture was higher than that in aerobic culture.

There was no significant difference in heart rate, PCO₂PO₂after Zolcril administration and temperature, respration rate, pH were significant difference compared with those of before administration, The induction time was 2.5±l.Omin and maintenance time was 86±23.2min. It was considered that Zoletil could he usefully used for the sedation and immobilization of Japanese macaque reared in zoological garden.

      • Acupuncture analgesia for operation in Korean native goats

        Lee, Soo-jin,Park, Chang-sik,Jun, Moo-hyung,Kim, Nam-joong,Lee, Jae-il,Kim, Young-suk,Kim, Myung-jin,Lee, Jae-yon,Jeong, Seong-mok,Kim, Duck-hwan,Kim, Myung-cheol 충남대학교 형질전환복제돼지연구센터 2007 논문집 Vol. No.10

The purpose of this study is to establish the analgesic effects of electroacupuncture for Korean native goat. Electroacupuncture was applied to the 6 Korean native goats. In 3 of them, rumenotomy was performed, and in the other 3, laparotomy was done. The analgesic induction time was 15 to 30 minutes. The acupoints used were Tian-ping (Celestial Peace, GV-5), Bai-hui (Hundred Meetings, Gv-20), left 13th thoracic nerve and left 3rd lumbar nerve. Electroacupuncture was performed in lateral recumbency. Needles were inserted 1-2cm deep, and connected to the electroacupuncture apparatus. The electrical stimulation condition was 30 Hz and 2-6 volts. Initially, the voltage of analgesia mode was maximized in each channel. And, the output was slowly reduced to the critical point that goats could tolerate without obvious discomfort or pain. Surgical operation was done successfully under electroacupuncture analgesia in 6 Korean native goats. In addition, the changes of temperature, heart rate and respiratory rate were studied during acupuncture analgesia. For 3 months after surgery, no experimental animals showed clinical problem in 6 Korean native goats.
