Vol.25 No.2

Industrialization and Urbanization caused a great influx of rural population into the cities, which caused housing types to change from detached homes to more apartments homes. The official 2014's Statistics (http://kossir.kr) show that half (49.6%) of the Korean population live in apartment buildings and 37.5% live in detached houses. For this reason, the apartments have become the typical housing in Korea. So, the aim of this study is to compare and analyze the internal apartment space of Budang (New-Town) and Wirye (New-Town), since these Budang apartments are the first new-town housing and Wirye apartments are the last new-town housing in Korea. I have used the Convex Analysis of Space Syntax Program in analyzing the inside space of both of these locations' apartments. The results are as follows : First, the inside space of Wirye apartments have more convex space than that of the Budang apartments. Second, the common inside space of the Budang apartments were planned by integration space, on the other hand the inside space of Wirye apartments were planned by segregation space. Third, the master bedroom in both of the locations' apartments were analyzed for their strong integration space which they may have in common. The K (Kitchen) + D (Dining) space in Budang apartments are classified as integration space, on the other hand L (Living) + K + D space is also classified as integration space. The L+K+D space of the Wirye apartments is classified as integration space. Finally, the inside space of the Wirye apartments were planned more for various spaces than that of Budang apartments. The concept of master bedroom in both new-town was not planed for a couple privacy space but the heart of the family.

Vol.16 No.2

Liturgical space is the most important in the spaces of catholic church architecture. But Since 1980's, korea catholic church has concentrated on functionality, decoration and sensuous expression. Thus this study analyzed the catholic liturgical space for reinforcing the present status of catholic church through Pyeongtaek district's parish in Diocese of Suwon. Although there are many compositional elements in catholic liturgical space, this study focused on the figures of church plane, the arrangement of nave's chair, the condition of sanctuary and the place of sacristy etc. Though there are many changes in composition elements of liturgical space by the 2nd Council of the Vatican, composition elements of site(shape, price, access road, area etc.) have an effect on liturgical space, too. But up to now, despite the necessity of the principles of liturgical space which are yet to be lacked.

Vol.21 No.1

The purpose of this study is to analyze the elevations of standard rural house designs after the 1990's. Various types of analysis were carried out on a total of 18 different sizes and 50 types of designs with p'yong sizes ranging from 12 to 44. The objects of analysis are the various elevations & the roof types that were supplied in the standard rural house design according to each year 1995 (8 sizes 20 types), 1997 (8 sizes 8 types), 1998 (l size 8 types), 2000 (2 sizes 4 types), 2001 (2 sizes 4 types), and 2004 (3 sizes 6 types). Results from the analysis demonstrate that (1) The gable roof has been used as the roofing type for standard rural house design since 1990. However the roof types of the standard rural house design includes only a few different types of gable roofs and roof materials(most roof types use asphalt shingle). (2) While most front elevations have been altered from asymmetrical to symmetrical most rear elevations have evolved from symmetrical to asymmetrical proportions since the 1990's (3) While siding materials and red-brick were most commonly used the main outer-wall materials prior to 2000, environmentally-friendly materials have been used as outer-wall materials since 2000. (4) In terms of the analysis of outer-wall objects before 2000 the walls were even, yet after 2000 these outer-walls evolved to become concave-convex walls. In other words, the evolution of the outer-wall has included a variety of wall types.

Korea's traditional house type, the Hanok, has been the essence of Korean domestic culture for hundreds of years. However, Hanok, have begun to disappear as result of urbanization. Because mud walls are crude and weak in water walls are also easily broken by impact. There are further problems in that construction cost is expensive and takes more time than modern house construction, and that the maintenance of Hanok is more difficult than people sometimes predict. Despite much interest in Hanok construction, there is a lack of in younger generation. Thus seeking new ways of maintaining Korea's traditional housing culture and extending Korean traditional houses is important. This study proposes directions for creating new residential environments for the future generation of Korea. A Dry-wall alternative to the Korean traditional mud wall is particularly needed. Dry-walling, made by sustainable materials such as mud board and wood, can strengthen the advantages and make up for the weaknesses of the Korea traditional mud wall. In this study, both wall types underwent various evaluations in terms of their performance in insulation testing, freezing and thawing testing, impacting testing and weight measuring (the size of material in this experiment was $69cm{\times}105cm$). On all of these tests, findings revealed that the dry-wall alternative performed better than traditional mud wall.

The remarkable growth of city population and rate of urbanization are increasing every year rapidly in Korea. On the other hand young people are decreasing and old people are increasing in rural areas. So in 2009, the five Rural New-Town Development Areas were selected by the Ministry for Food, Agriculture Forestry and Fisheries. To provide data necessary for housing types and floor planning and development suitable for rural new-town development to be implemented constantly in rural areas all over the country later, this study used a space syntax program to analyze housing types and space structures within houses in five new-town development areas. After analyzing 33 floor plans for the five areas, there were few houses with separation of communal (integration space) and personal living spaces segregation space). In particular, 82% had personal living spaces requiring protection of privacy, such as bedrooms and the toilet, classified into communal living spaces. Residential houses for rural new-town development targeting the young population valuing personal life and privacy, which failed to reflect city people"s life properly, were expected to decrease residential satisfaction after occupancy.

With the rapid growth of smart device penetration, literally millions of applications have appeared in app stores and so have various types of dictionary apps. In conjunction with this flourishing of apps, this paper makes an attempt to analyze one type of dictionary app―app dictionary, or app version of “digitized paper dictionary”(Svensén 2009:438). For the analysis of the features and search functions, five app dictionaries are selected from Apple’s App Store: two monolingual English dictionaries and three bilingual English-Korean / Korean-English dictionaries. Demonstrating the details of the five app dictionaries, this study presents how well dictionaries have been transferred on to this new medium and what kinds of differences are

The purpose of this study was to explore the general patterns of the floor plans of F.L.Wright’s Usonian houses(U-houses). F.L. Wright"s mostly used simple geometric shapes as the basis for most of his architectural designs. In his early works, his typical floor plans were square or rectangular shapes, which gradually were transformed into various kinds of shapes. The general patterns of floor plans of his U-houses were L-shaped or straight shaped using a 4×4 grid system. Most of U-houses consisted of 3 space: living room, kitchen & dining, and bedroom. Among them, a living room worked the most important role in each house. Most U-houses were designed to have solid walls on one side to provide a gallery space and transparent glass walls on the other side connect between interior and exterior.

Vol.27 No.3

The purpose of this study is to study how F.L. Wright reflected the climatic properties and materials of the region into creative ways of designing his architecture. The research method examined the design methods and use of materials by Wright in existing research literature and compares the space plans of housing works in Arizona. The research results will be summarized as follows : 1) For two-story houses, pilotis was used to avoid the hot air and the walls on the ground floor were often planned as thick wall. 2) In the fifties, F.L. Wright‘s design method changed in a circle from the vertical and horizontal lines. 3) F.L.Wright‘s Architectural form concepts and design concepts were extracted from local symbolic forms and natural forms. 4) F.L.Wright avoided Arizona"s direct light but Indirect sunlight enters into the interior space. 5)External space was expressed as a closed space, while internal space was expressed as an open space. It"s like an organic space. 6) Most of the housing materials used are stone and cement from rough deserts, and wood with low heat conductivity and thick concrete blocks to prevent the sunlight from rising above.
