Vol.16 No.5

IoT (Internet of Things) is recently burgeoning as business applications as well as ICT itself. Among the business applications of IoT, wearable devices are recognized as a leading area of customer devices. This research first identifies customer needs of activity trackers (fitness trackers), as one of representative wearable devices, and mapping the identified needs with the well-known marketing model of marketing mix (4 P`s: Product, Price, Promotion, and Place). Survey was applied to university students for identifying current and potential needs for activity trackers. The needs were classified by 4 P`s, and according to the results, different from other IT devices, activity trackers has more potential needs. Moreover, reliable distribution channels, offline and company owned shops were preferred, rather than online shopping mall by third parties. The results would provide some valuable implications to not only designers of activity trackers but also business management.

홍석기 ( Suk Ki Hong ),김인희 ( In Hee Kim ),김도환 ( Do Hwan Kim ),노수동,조승희 서울시정개발연구원 2009 연구보고서 Vol.2009 No.50

Seoul is the only capital city in the world that preserved 6 century old fortress. Even in great cities of the world such as New York, London, Tokyo, Beijing, and Paris, the world`s tourist center, the fortress that defined the border of the city gradually disappeared as it was used as roads and other urban infrastructures. There are cities where some part of the fortress has remained, but Seoul fortress must be the only fortress that still wrap the border of the entire city as it did in the past. For this, Seoul gained the prestige of the walled capital beyond the level of the walled city found around the world. The fortress of Seoul can become a typical historic and cultural heritage representing large cities of the world. However, the value of this important historic and cultural heritage is not recognized by citizens. The importance of Seoul fortress has been ignored as that of other historic and cultural heritages has within the current of the times represented as economic growth and industrial development. Although historic and cultural heritage gained some attention compared with the past as the importance of it rose recently, the fortress is being maintained on the level of protecting urban landscape and preserving cultural assets. Eventually, the fortress is merely a cultural heritage that is not easily involved with the life of citizens, does not fit the cityscape, and is difficult to approach. The fortress that embraces the living space of citizens is not properly recognized for its importance and value although it is a cultural heritage not commonly found in the large cities of the world. It is necessary to discover stories related with historic places in order to reveal the value of Seoul fortress and develop it into the place that the citizens of Seoul and the world visit and enjoy instead of being a path to walk. Before that, it is necessary to restore the ancient image of Seoul fortress which is severed and damaged by high rises and wide asphalt roads that symbolize the modern city in order to restore cultural heritage values and it is also necessary to develop open spaces and facilities for citizens to enjoy the elegance and beauty of the fortress. Also, it will need various cultural contents to attract citizens to the fortress. Seoul fortress needs to be turned into a historic and cultural space with elements of tourism rather than a simple restoration of cultural assets in order to truly reveal the value of the fortress. This study made a suggestion for improvement, the plan for the development of historic and cultural spaces around the fortress and neighboring areas in order to reveal the value of Seoul fortress. Chapter 1 briefly discussed the necessity, purpose, contents and methods of study, and Chapter 2 reinterpreted the historic and cultural meaning of the fortress such by comparatively analyzing the history of fortresses inside and outside Korea based on the origin and development of the fortress building, examining physical characteristics of Seoul fortress, and examining the scenes of life in the past based on the history and culture of Seoul fortress. Chapter 3 examined the current status of Seoul fortress and the policies of Seoul government and also examined the relationship between the fortress, the city, and peripheral environment. Chapter 4 gave new meaning and characteristics to the fortress, sought for measures to enhance the value of fortress and provided the plans to realize such measures in a fixed space and illustrations. Chapter 5(Overseas Case: Revelation of Values of Walled Cities in France) discussed how France restored and use their fortress as the reference for the restoration and maintenance of Seoul fortress. Chapter 6(Conclusion and Policy Suggestions) suggested a comprehensive measure and details of the measure about the revelation of the historic and cultural values of Seoul fortress. The revelation of the values of Seoul fortress as a historic and cultural space will be the starting point for converting the mechanical space and dry environment of modern cities into historic and cultural space.

Vol.21 No.3

Food service is the major part of diverse service areas, where productivity improvement is needed. Recently, the efficient and effective way of productivity improvement had been found through the convergence among diverse disciplines, which is often called consilience. Three case studies were conducted for family buffet restaurants, and their theoretical foundation is based the consilience of two disciplines, food service management and operations management, specifically Lean Management. Three cases were designed for one unit of analysis, hall service operations of family buffet restaurants (multi cases and single unit of analysis). The purpose of the studies is to examine the hall service operations at family buffet restaurants, and further to identify the application of Lean Management to its operations for productivity improvement. Based on Lean Management perspectives, the advantages and disadvantages of various process layouts for hall service operations of family buffet restaurants were analyzed. It was found that many components of Lean Management could be applied for the hall service operations. In conclusion, five lessons for process layout design of family buffet restaurants were suggested to improve hall service productivity. The lessons would be beneficial to practitioners in food service industry as well as management researchers in academic society.

Seoul joined global city level party based on its volume and economic capacity, However, it has mainly focused on it`s visible facility expansion in process of development. In order to be one of the world-famous global cities, above all, different strategic approach focusing on the human resource is requested. 300,000 immigrant residents from overseas are no longer aliens in Seoul They are neighbors who has right to live together, equally guaranteed by the law in regardless of their race, language, religion, cultural background. It is time for the tolerance. Seoul, as capital city which represents the Republic of Korea, should embrace the citizen from under-development nations Hence, it is necessary for Seoul to make diverse efforts to become an hopeful city. They come to Seoul not only for their personal reason but also for achieving success, supporting their family and contributing their nations. Namely, Seoul is space for them to make their dream come true. Hereupon, Seoul needs to prepare the policy in which it supports their stabilization, social adoption, social participation and contribution for social development. The concept of social cohesion is a keyword of this research, interpreted as a sense of belonging, mutual interest and positive relationship among community members. This research was developed through three approaches (spatial change, social system change and awareness change) for solving problems of social cohesion and it`s improvement. In Chapter 1, we introduce the necessity and the primary aim of this research and briefly describe its research method, Chapters 2 adopts chronicle approach to summarize the immigrant history in Seoul, It also analyzes formation process and physical characteristics of the foreigner`s communities from spatial point of view and estimates their change in the future. Chapter 3 presents the current situation of the laws and social systems (which is) supporting the foreigners and analyzes the alternative for development of social recognition of global culture by including programs for native Korean. In chapter 4, we present the result of survey focusing on mutual consciousness among foreign residents and interviews with Koreans, foreigners and related institute s employees, Lastly, in chapter 5, we proposes the object and alternative action plan to grow Seoul as a leader class global city. In order to make Seoul as a leader class global city, it is necessary to formulate a system which not only supports foreigner s stable settlement in Seoul but also guarantees their active participation same as natives. If these processes are executed step by step, Seoul gives many chances to the foreigner and they are willing to contribute their assets for developing our society.

Although bicycle promotion policy has been carried out by central and local governments for 15 years since the Bicycle Promotion Act was legislated in 1995, the condition for it is still negative. Seoul metropolitan government is preparing various policies for bicycle users including providing bicycle roads by reducing the car lanes, and enforcing city plan projects to provide bicycle road or parking lot for bicycles. However, we should review seriously if such expansion of bicycle facilities contribute much to the promotion of bicycle use, We need to investigate the reason why the traffic share of bicycles has been rather reduced from that of 15 years ago, Although the result of field survey shows discrepancy between the districts, it is confirmed that the environment for bicycle use in Seoul is very poor in general. Especially, the condition is even worse in alleys compared to that in the main or sub-arterial road, and facilities for bicycle in the living zone fall short. In order to reduce traffic share of cars and increase that of bicycles, use of bicycle in everyday life should be encouraged. In the cities, there are facilities used frequently in everyday life such as schools, neighborhood facilities, offices, and everyday business facilities in the vicinity of dwelling zones, However, there lacks facilities for bicycles in such zone. In order to foster use of bicycle more practically, it is considered necessary to provide with sufficient facilities in the living zones, other than riverside roads which are used for leisure activities or arterial roads which are used for commuting purpose. Result of survey shows that citizens of Seoul use bicycle mainly to enjoy leisure or to move, and the reason of avoiding use of bicycles is inconvenience or danger in using them. However, they have very positive opinion in promoting bicycle use. Most citizens prefer expansion of bicycle roads by reducing car lanes. More than half of those who don`t use bicycle expressed intention to join in using bicycles once the condition is improved, for which appropriate policies are called for. Bicycles are a kind of device to move. They are personal of family properties. So, they need storage and facilities for safe ride. Presently, storage facilities are not proper, and alleys in the village are very dangerous. Total environment of the roads to living facilities such as those to schools, to private institutes, to markets and marts, to work should be examined. Although it would be difficult to refurbish all the roads in Seoul city for use of bicycles, it is required to furnish alleys to facilitate safe and convenient move of citizens, and to install storages for bicycle. Living spaces for bicycles are closely related to everyday live of citizens, connecting their house, living facilities, schools, markets, and work place each other. If bicycle is considered just as a tool of leisure or exercise, increase of bicycle users would become sluggish soon. Bicycle use will be activated in our life only when it performs the role as one of daily necessaries for people to move short distance in their everyday life. We should share living or cultural space with bicycles, in order to appropriate bicycles a role as a living necessity. Once bicycle use is fostered we could form closer social relations and improve encounter, touch, and exchange with each other, freeing ourselves from closed dwelling structure and car space.
