The phytochemical study of Viscum album (Loranthaceae) led to the isolation of twelve compounds, lupeol (1), betulonic acid (2), betulinic acid (3), termitic acid (4), ursolic acid (5), β-sitosterol (6),α- spinasterol (7), oleanolic acid (8), 5- hydroxy-1-(4'- hydoxyphenyl)-7-(4"-hydroxyphenyl)-hepta-1-en-3-on (9), 2'- hydroxy- 4',6'-dimethoxychalcone-4-0-glucoside (10), 2'-hydroxy-4',6'-dime thoxychalcon e-4-0-[apio-syl(1-> 2)]glucoside (11) and sringin (12). Their structures were established by chemical and spectroscopic methods. The cytotoxicity of the isolated compounds was evaluated by sulforhodamine B assay against five cultured human tumor cell lines.

6종의 인체 암(폐암, 피부암, 결장암, 자궁암, 선암 및 뇌암)과 그의 17가지 세포주들에 대한 리간드 화합물 3,6-bis(2'-pyridyl)pyridazine(1) 과 3,6-bi s(6'-methyl-2'-pyridyl)pyridazine(2) 그리고 그들의 전이금속(Ni(II), Cu(II) 및 Zn(II)) 착 화합물들 $(3{\sim}6)$ 세포독성을 각각 측정하였다. 그 결과, 특히 Cu(II) 착 화합물, bis-[3,6-bis-(6'-methyl-2'-pyridyl)pyridazine-$k^2N^2,N^3$]chlorocopper(II)perchlorate (4)는 뇌암(SNB-19)과 결장암(SW-62) 세포주에 대하여 제1세대 항암제인 Cis-platin보다 높은 세포독성을 나타내었다. A series of cytotoxic activities $(ED_{50})$ in vitro against six human cancers (lung cancer, uterine cancer, skin cancer, brain cancer, colon cancer and adenocarcinoma) and their seventeen cell lines of 3,6-bis(2'-pyridyl)pyridazine, 1, 3,6-bis-(6'-methyl-2'-pyridyl)pyridazine, 2 and their transition metal, Ni(II), Cu(II) and Zn(II) complexes, $3{\sim}6$ were measured. Particularly, the results revealed that the cytotoxic activities against the brain cancer cell line (SNB-19) and the colon cancer cell line (SW62) of bis- [3,6-bis-(6'-methyl-2'-pyridyl)pyridazine-$k^2N^2,N^3$]chlorocopper(II)perchlorate, 4 were shown to be higher than that of the first generation anticancer agent, Cis-platin.

From the methanol extract of Rhododendron brachycarpum four triterpenes, three phenylpropanes and a diterpene alkaloid were isolated. Their structures were identified as glutinol (1), 3β-hydroxyurs-12-ene (2), β-sitosterol (3), (E)-p-hydroxycinnamic acid hexadecylester (4), (-)-rhododendrol (5), (+)-rhododendrol (6), 3β-hydroxyurs-12-en-28-oic acid (7) and gray-anotoxin I (8) by spectroscopic methods. Compound 8 showed moderate cytotoxicity against five cultured human tumor cell lines with ED50 values of 3.21~4.05 μg/ml. The other compounds were of marginal activity against the tested cell lines.

The occurrence of resistance to chemotherapeutic drugs is a major problem for successful cancer treatment. This resistant phenotype of cancer cell frequently reveals a broad spectrum to structurally and/or functionally unrelated anti-cancer drugs, termed multidrug resistance (MDR). Overexpression of P-glycoprotein (P-gp), a transmembrane drug efflux pump, is a major mechanism of MDR. Accordingly, considerable effort has been directed towards to development of compounds that inhibit P-gp, reverse the MDR phenotype and sensitize cancer cells to conventional chemotherapy without undesired toxicological effects. In an effort to search for novel MDR reversal agent, we tested the cytotoxicity of paclitaxel, a well-known substrate of P-gp, against P-gp-expressing HCT15 and HCT15/CL02 human colorectal cancer cells in the presence or absence of benzotriazepin analogues, as well as against P-gp-negative A549 human non-small cell lung and SK-OV-3 human ovarian cancer cells in vitro. Among the compounds tested, the agents that have phenyl amide moiety at 3 position remarkably increased the cytotoxicity of paclitaxel against P-gp-expressing cancer cells, but not against P-gp-negative cancer cells. BTZ-15 and BTZ-16 at 4μM revealed similar MDR reversal activity to 10μM verapamil, a well-known MDR reversal agent.

Some analogs and their Mannich bases of Antineoplaston A10 (A10) were synthesized. Chemical yield for the 2-(or 3-)thienyl, benzol, and phenylpropionyl analogs were high but 1-naphthyl analog was synthesized in low yield. the Mannich bases formation of these analogs with morpholine went verywell compared to other bases. 1-Naphthyl, 4-nitrobenzoyl, and phenylpropionyl analogs of A10 showed weak in vitro activity but the other A10 analogs showed weaker or no activity at 10-1000mcg/ml. But their Mannich bases containing A10analogs showed good in vitro activity compared to simple A10 analogs.

Three alkaloids, (-)-stylopine (I), (+)-chelidonine (II), oxysanguinarine (III) and two triterpenoids, $6{\alpha}-hydroxy-A-neo-germacer-22(29)-en-30-oic\;acid$ (IV) and hop-22(29)-en-30-oic acid (V), were isolated from the methanol extract of of Chelidonium majus var. asiaticum, and their cytotoxicity were tested against five cultured human tumor cell lines.

Activity-guided fractionation and repeated column chromatography afforded two cytotoxic compounds R-3 and R-4 from the root of Rumex japonicus HOUTT. Compounds were identified as musizin and emodin, respectively, by the physicochemical and spectral data. Besides R-3 and R-4, two compounds R-1 and R-2, chrysophanol and physcion, respectively, were also isolated. The compound R-3 and R-4 exhibited cytotoxicity against cultured human tumor cell lines, A-549, SK-OV-3, SK-MEL-2, XF498 and HCT15 with ED50 values ranging from 2.68 to 10.06mcg/ml.

This investigation aims to provide basic data for rural village planning and rehabilitation planning. Public infrastructures of forty selected villages have been surveyed. Provision of facilities, user satisfaction, perceived problems, and conditions of maintenance have been surveyed for three classified types of infrastructures; 1) public utility spaces such as community hall, and parking lots, 2) public production infrastructures such as warehouses, and irrigation facilities, and 3) public infrastructures for living environments such as roads, water supply, and sewage system. All twenty smaller villages (ki-cho-ma-ul) had problems of poor conditions and insufficient spaces with community halls. Most of the smaller villages suffered from lack of public production infrastructures, or had problems of insufficient spaces and poor maintenance conditions. They also lacked good access roads with adequate right of ways. Only three villages were provided with sewage systems. In the twenty larger villages (myun-so-ma-ul), though public utility spaces were provided for most of them (as an example, sixteen villages had welfare centers), they were not large enough and they were maintained in poor condition too. On the one hand twelve of the larger villages had farm machine service centers, only a few villages were equipped with warehouses. Many more public infrastructures for living environments were found in larger villages. However, only a few villages had pollution control facilities. Multidimensional scaling revealed groups of distinctive characteristics, in terms of public infrastructures, among smaller villages. It did not show any noticeable distinctions among larger villages.
