본 연구는 유권자가 투표행위를 하는데 있어 어떠한 요인에 의해 투표결정을 하는가에 대해 결정요인을 분석하고 향후 연구방향을 제시하고자 하였다. 투표행태에 관한 기존연구를 대상으로 분석하였으며, 분석결과는 다양한 변수에 의해 결정되는 것으로 나타났다. 즉 선거시점과 선거유형, 그리고 선거지역에 따라 영향을 미치는 결정변수는 다양하게 나타났으나, 이러한 결정변수가 유권자의 투표행위에 결정적으로 미치는 결정변수로 작용한다고 보기에는 한계가 있는 것으로 판단된다. 왜냐하면 최근에 선거문화에서 나타나고 있는 표쏠림, 집권당의 평가에 대한 반대결과 등의 현상을 설영하는 데에는 한 계가 있기 때문이다. 그러므로 향후 한국 투표행태의 결정요인에 관한 연구 방향은 첫째, 한국의 독특한 현상인 표쏠림 현상, 집권당과 반대결과가 나타나는 현상 등에 대한 연구가 선행되어야 할 것이다. 둘째, 투표행태의 결정요인은 인구학적 요인. 사회심리적 요인, 후보자 요인, 정책적 요인, 회고적 요인, 환경적 요인 등 모든 요인이 영향을 미치기 때문에 요인 간의 가중치를 설정하여 미치는 모든 요인 중 어떠한 요인이 더 많이 영향을 미치는지를 연구해야 한다. 셋째, 인지이론에서 주장하는 것처럼 유권자에게 무엇이 인지되고. 무엇이 인지되지 않은지에 대한 연구가 이루어져야 할 것이다.
