Small molecules based (SM)on viologens are well known materials for cathode buffer layer in the PSCs, because of their several advantages such as low lying LUMO level due to high electron affinity and good solubility in protic solvent.1,10-bis(4-hydroxypropyl)-[4,40-bipyridine]- 1,10-diium bromide (SM1) or 1,10-bis(2,3-dihydroxypropyl)-[4,40- bipyridine]-1,10-diium bromide (SM2) were synthesized and employed as interlayer in inverted polymer solar cells. When these SM doped with ZnO layer the device efficiency improved. The work function given the range between -4,2~ -4.3 eV. This result is higher than the pristine. Power conversion efficiency of modified viologen also gave high efficiency compared to pristine (7.4%), the different value of V1(9.0%) and V2 (8.6%) indicate that effect of the hydroxyl group in viologen derivatives play an important role to enhance the PCE.
