Vol.27 No.3
This article demonstrates the limits and possibilities of virtual/actual tours in the COVID-19 Pandemic. Specifically, the article examines the complex relations between the virtual and the actual through a lens of ‘becoming,’ topology, and simulacra while escaping from the belief that the virtual and the actual are separated in touring, and thus one can copy or substitute the other. First, I dismantle the dichotomy of the virtual and the actual drawing on the literature of virtual space (mainly cyberspace). Then, based on the theories of Deleuze, I reconceptualize the topological space of becoming virtual/actual. Finally, I highlight new forms of tourist places and experiences, which are emerging in and through the edges of virtual/actual, with cases of Instagram and non-landing tourism flights. In doing so, the article provides a relevant theoretical framework for future studies while expanding the discussion regarding virtual/actual tours in the (post-)COVID-19 Pandemic.
Vol.24 No.2
This study pits the place against the space in an attempt to understand the restructuring of capitalist urban space driven by neoliberalism. In the center of the discussion is the squatter settlement of Gyruong village which was formed at the foothill of Gaepo-dong’s Mt. Guryong in Gangnam District in 1988. In the time of the flood tide of Neoliberalism, the poor who moved into the village escaping from clearances and redevelopments formed a shelter to protect their lives. The village community promoted friendship with neighbors and established the town council to manage all the events in the village. On the other hand, Guryong village has become a new resource of surplus value for landowners and developers in pursuit of development profits. The logic of accumulation which surged into village in the name of developments corresponded to expectations for development profits that inhere in residents. As the city announced the public development for the Guryong village, the place of life has been virtually subsumed into capitalist urban space. The realistic alternative to protect the endangered place against neoliberal restructuring is to defend residents who represent identity of that place.

Reducing gentrification to class struggle between the haves and the have-nots tends to disregard its psychic and emotional aspects that are irreducible in terms of cultural, social, or economic capital. This article captures those more-than-capitalist aspects of gentrification while exploring how the aesthetic desire for authenticity sustains gentrification and anti-gentrification simultaneously. First, I shed light on the aesthetics of authenticity reflected in the narratives of commercial gentrification and critically review how previous studies interpret it. Then, drawing on the recent discussion around the ambivalence of (anti)gentrification and the ethical dilemma of its actors, I highlight the psychic and emotional factors that mediate the selective inclusion and exclusion of others. Consequently, this article provides a relevant theoretical framework to understand the more-than-capitalist gentrification by revisiting the paradoxical aesthetics of commercial gentrification through a lens of authenticity.
