The global area of GM Crops continued to grow in 2018 and reached 191.7 million hectares. Twenty-six countries approved biotech crops for planting and an additional 44 countries (18 + 26 EU countries) officially imported biotech crops for food, feed, and processing, meaning that biotech crops are now commonly accepted in those countries. First-generation GM seed is being commercialized by global agricultural companies in advanced countries such as the United States and parts of Europe. The fact that more than 90% of first-generation GM seeds, which have been commercialized for 20 years, are both insect resistant and herbicide resistant proves that they continue to have an effect on improving agricultural productivity and increasing farmers incomes. As the effectiveness of GM crops has been proven and technology has been developed, the GM crop development trend has recently changed. In other words, it has moved from being producer-oriented to benefiting both farmers and consumers. In Korea, the National Program for GM Crops (NCGC), one of the Next-Generation BioGreen 21 Programs organized by Rural Development Administration (RDA), was established in 2011 to develop biotech crops that will be used in the future to solve our agricultural problems. To accomplish this mission, the NCGC carried out the exploration of useful functional genes, the development of qualified events, and the safety assessment of developed events. Here, we introduce the current status of GM crop development and commercialization in the world and in Korea.

This study was conducted to screen the antagonistic bacteria which inhibit the growth of plant pathogen, fusarium wilt(Fusarium oxysporum) occurred in tomato plants in greenhouse. We isolated an effective bacterial strains and investigated into the antifungal activity of the antagonistic microorganism and it’s identification. Ten bacterial strains which strongly inhibited Fusarium oxysporum were isolated from the nature, and the best antagonistic bacterial strain designated as KC175, was selected. The antagonistic strain KC175 was identified to be the genus Bacillus sp. based on the morphological and biochemical characterization. The Bacillus sp. KC175 showed 58.2% of antifungal activity against the growth of Fusarium oxysporum. By the bacterialization of the culture broth and the heat bacterialization culture filtrate of it, Bacillus sp. KC175 showed 91% and 18% of antifungal activity, respectively.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the validity, reliability and practicality of a concept map as an assessment tool in the context of biology concept learning. Forty undergraduate students participated in concept mapping, and the maps were scored by preservice science teachers, using one of three different scoring methods, that is, concept map scoring methods developed by Burry-Stock, Novak & Gowin and McClure & Bell. Two scorers were assigned to each scoring method. As far as the validity of the assessment methods was concerned, two of the three methods were found to be very valid, while Burry-Stock`s scoring method was shown little valid. As far as the internal consistency of the methods was concerned, considerably high consistencies were shown between every pair of scorers, judging from high correlation coefficients between the pair of scorers for each scoring method. It took from 1.13 minutes to 3.70 minutes to assess a map at the average. It showed that concept mapping could be used in school classrooms with the limited resources of time and people. These findings suggest that the concept mapping can be an appropriate tool for assessing biology concept understandings.

The purpose of this study was to investigate a process of change which was made by a science teacher for one-year long in-service education program in terms of constructivist teaching behaviors and beliefs. The in-service program was featured by the use of learning cycle model and Science-Technology-Society approach. One of science teachers, who attended an one-year long in-service program was selected for this study. She developed three teaching materials for the duration. The three teaching materials were analyzed to find components of Science-Technology-Society and the integration of science content and real life context. Also, an interview was performed to assess changes in her perspectives on science, science teaching and science learning through the program. The first material was constructed in the form of learning cycle with little emphasis on STS. The second material was embedded with personal matters such as a refrigerator. The final one was shown to be organized with science content in a personal context and with focus on the role play. The interview also showed that her perspectives on science and science teaching have changed toward the constructivist`s during the participation in the in-service program. It is suggested that a long-term in-service program should be developed and implemented so that the science teachers may become constructivist teachers.

In order to screen the antagonistic bacteria which inhibit the growth of the plant pathogen, Penicillum expansum,we isolated an effective bacterial strain and investigated into the antifungal activity of the antagonist and it's identification. The eleven strains of bacteria which strongly inhibited P. expansum were isolated from the nature, and the best antagonistic bacterial strain designated as KB22, was selected. The antagonistic strain KB22 was identified to be the genus Bacillus subtilis based on morphological and biochemical characterization. The KB22 showed 55.9% of antifungal activity against the growth of P. expansum. By the treatment of the culture broth and the heat treated culture filtrate of it, the B. subtilis KB22 showed 90% and 15% of antifungal activity, respectively.
