Purpose: To report a case of transient ophthalmoplegia and visual loss caused by ophthalmic artery occlusion induced after surgery in prone position. Methods: A 32-year-old woman was referred to the department of ophthalmology for unilateral visual loss and ophthalmoplegia after cervical spine surgery performed in prone position. Full ocular examinations, including fluorescein angiography (FAG) and electroretinography (ERG) were performed. Results: On the initial visit, her right visual acuity was light perception and the left visual acuity was 1.0. Ophthalmoplegia and an afferent pupillary defect was present in the right eye. A fundus examination revealed no abnormal findings. On the 4th day, the retina in posterior pole was opacified and late phase of FAG showed fluorescein leakage from the retinal and choroidal vessels. On the 8th day, the best corrected visual acuity of the right eye was improved to 0.7 and ERG showed decreased amplitudes of both a and b waves. On the 12 th day, ocular motility was fully recovered. On the 61 st day, visual acuity of the right eye was 0.7 and ERG showed that the amplitude had improved from the initial examination.

치주인대세포 및 치은섬유아세포의 DNA 합성능에 대한 b-Fibroblast growth factor의 영향

The use of basic fibroblast growth factor which function as potent biologic mediators regulating numerous activities of wound healing has been suggested for the promotion of periodontal regeneration. The mitogenic effects of basic fibroblast growth factor on human periodontal ligament cells and human gingival fibroblasts were evaluated by determining the incorporation of 5-Bromo-2'deoxy-uridine into DNA of the cells in a dose -dependent manner. The cells which were prepared were the primary cultured gingival fibroblasts and periodontal ligament cells from human the fourth or sixth subpassages were used in the experiments. The cells which were seeded DMEM contain 10% FBS. The added concentrations of basic fibroblast growth factor were 0.1, 1, 10, 50, $l00{\eta}g/ml$ and basic fibroblast growth factor were added to the quiescent cells for 24 hours, 48 hours and 72 hours. They were labeled with $10{\mu}l/200{\mu}l$ 5Bromo-2'-deoxy-uridine for the last 6 hours of each culture. The results of the five determinants were presented as mean and S.D.. The results were as follows. : The DNA synthetic activity of human gingival fibroblasts was increased dose dependently by basic fibroblast growth factor at 24 hours, 48 hours and 72 hours. The similar mitogenic effects were at the 24 and 48 hours of basic fibroblast growth factor, but the DNA synthetic activity of human gingival fibroblasts generally decreased at 72 hours. The DNA synthetic activity of human periodontal ligament cells was increased dose dependently to $50{\eta}g/ml$ by basic fibroblast growth factor at 24, 48 and 72 hours, but the DNA synthetic activity decreased at $l00{\eta}g/ml$ of each hour. Generally the maximum mitogenic effects were at the 48 hours application of basic fibroblast growth factor. The DNA synthetic activity of human periodontal ligament cells generally decreased lower at 72 hours than at 24, 48 hours the application of basic fibroblast growth factor. In the comparison of DNA synthetic activity between human gingival fibroblasts and human periodontal ligament cells, human periodontal ligament cells had slightly higher proliferation activity than human gingival fibroblasts for a longer time at the high dosage of the basic fibroblast growth factor.In conclusion, basic fibroblast growth factor have important roles in the stimulation of DNA synthesis in human periodontal ligament cells and human gingival fibroblasts, and thus may be useful for clinical applications in periodontal regenerative procedures.

Purpose: To report a case of proptosis occurring during a Valsalva maneuver in a neurofibromatosis patient with an arachnoid cyst. Case summary: A 42-year-old man diagnosed with type I neurofibromatosis visited our hospital with a 20-year history of enophthalmos in the left eye. The patient also complained of exophthalmos during the abdominal straining. On exophthalmometry, a 4 mm enophthalmos was found. The patient also presented with a limited motion to the superior and lateral direction. There was an ocular pulsation corresponding to the heart rate. During the Valsalva maneuver, a marked exophthalmos of the left eye occurred. The patient had light brown spots on the skin of the face and body trunk. Following an orbital computed tomography (CT), defects of the left sphenoid bone were present. Posteriorly, an arachnoid cyst was found; however, there was a lack of varix. The archnoid cyst was also observed to expand into the orbit during the Valsalva maneuver and forward the globe. Conclusions: To date, cases of proptosis occurring during a Valsalva maneuver by causes other than orbital varix are rare. Herein, the authors report a case with a review of literature. Purpose: To report a case of macular hole following intravitreal ranibizumab injection in choroidal neovascularization associated with age-related macular degeneration. Case summary: A 73-year-old man was referred for a sudden decline in vision in his right eye. The best corrected visual acuity was 0.15 in the right eye and 0.9 in the left eye. There was a choroidal neovascularization associated with subretinal hemorrhage in the right eye. Optical coherence tomogram (OCT) showed subretinal hemorrhage and pigment retinal epithelium detachment in the right eye. The patient received intravitreal ranibizumab injection. Four weeks after the initial treatment, the best corrected visual acuity of the right eye was improved to 0.3. The patient received a second intravitreal ranibizumab injection. Four weeks after the second injection, the patient presented with further decreased vision in his right eye, with a best corrected visual acuity of 0.02. Although the fundus examination was indistinct, OCT confirmed the presence of a full thickness macular hole. The patient received a third intravitreal ranibizumab injection. Four weeks after receiving the third injection, the patient underwent pars plana vitrectomy with internal limiting membrane peeling and fluid-gas exchange. Four months later, the macula hole was closed completely and visual acuity was 0.1. Conclusions: Although it is rare, intravitreal ranibizumab injection in the treatment of choroidal neovascularization secondary to age-related macular degeneration may cause complicated by a macular hole. 발살바조작 후 유발된 일과성 흑암시

Purpose: To report the case of a patient with amaurosis fugax that occurred following a Valsalva maneuver. Case summary: A 40-year-old man presented with amaurosis fugax of the right eye, which had occurred several times during the previous month. After coughing, the visual acuity of the right eye decreased temporarily during the first episode. Subsequently, any time a Valsalva maneuver, such as coughing, occurred, this symptom reappeared. Initially, this symptom persisted for five to ten minutes and occurred once or twice a day, but it gradually increased in frequency. The physical examination was normal, and his best corrected visual acuity was 20/20 bilaterally. Neither specific findings in the slit lamp examination nor abnormal findings in the fundus examination were detected. On fluorescein fundus angiography, no abnormal finding was observed before the symptom was triggered by a Valsalva maneuver, but after the symptom was triggered by coughing, the choroidal and retinal arterial phases were delayed. Hematological and neurological examinations, including magnetic resonance imaging, magnetic resonance angiography, and cerebral angiography, were all normal. Therefore, he was diagnosed with amaurosis fugax generated by a Valsalva maneuver. Conclusions: In any patient who complains of amaurosis fugax repeatedly, as seen in this case, one must consider the possibility that it results from a Valsalva maneuver, after eliminating occlusive vascular diseases, such as carotid stenosis or atherosclerotic disease. Purpose: To report a case of inflammatory granuloma in the right medial canthal area which occurred seven years after a cosmetic collagen-containing dermal filler injection in the forehead. Case summary: A-47-year-old female, who had been treated with collagen-containing filler 7 years earlier, presented with a mass in the right medial canthal area discovered 20 days previously. There was mild tenderness and the mass was firm and not fixed. The patient reported that the size of the mass was slowly increasing. Orbital computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging showed an approximate 1 cm-sized, poorly defined, enhancing nodular thickening without evidence of bony erosion. The mass was removed through a skin incision and unidentified foreign bodies were found around the mass. On histopathologic examination, it was diagnosed as inflammatory granuloma caused by foreign substances. Conclusions: Collagen-containing fillers are widely used in cosmetic surgery for their lasting effect and few complications. However some complications such as inflammatory granuloma may occur at the injection site or other sites, even several years after operation. J Korean Ophthalmol Soc 49(8):1330-1334, 2008

전신 악성 림프종으로 재발한 안부속기 양성 림프구 과다증식 1예

Purpose: We report a case of recurred systemic malignant lymphoma developed after the treatment for ocular adnexal benign reactive lymphoid hyperplasia. Case summery: A 71-year-old female visited our hospital for right upper eyelid swelling and proptosis that had been progressing slowly for 4 years. Orbital computed tomography (CT) showed enlargement of the bellies of lateral and superior rectus muscles in the right orbit, but other abnormal findings were not detected in the systemic evaluation. Through incisional biopsy, benign reactive lymphoid hyperplasia was diagnosed on histopathologic examination. Upper eyelid swelling and proptosis resolved after radiation therapy. Fifty-one months after the treatment of benign reactive lymphoid hyperplasia, the patient visited our hospital again for a painful mass that had developed in the left neck. On neck CT, it showed enlargement of the left cervical lymph node and asymmetrical thickening of the left oropharyngeal wall. Systemic MALT lymphoma was confirmed, and radiation therapy was performed. According to neck CT, four months after radiation therapy, the enlargement and thickening resolved. Conclusions: Because there is a possibility of systemic malignant lymphoma after benign reactive lymphoid hyperplasia, continuous follow-up and repeated systemic evaluation should be required after treatment of ocular adnexal benign reactive lymphoid hyperplasia.

식민지 지배국과 피지배국 언어의 역학관계로 보는 마스기 시즈에(真杉静枝)의 「남방의 말(南方の言葉)」

작가로서의 명망보다는 문단의 스캔들 메이커로 더 유명했던 마스기 시즈에(真杉静枝)는 1923년 「역장의 젊은 아내(駅長の若き妻)」로 데뷔한 이래 1940년대 후반 이후 문단에서 서서히 멀어지기까지 꾸준히 작품 활동을 지속한 일본 출생의 여성 작가이다. 마스기 시즈에는 그동안 한국에서는 거의 알려져 있지 않았던 작가로, 작품도 지금까지 전혀 번역되어 소개된 적이 없었다. 아직까지는 일본에서조차도 그녀의 문학 관련 연구 자체가 많이 축적된 것은 아니지만, 일본 통치하의 타이완에서 자신이 보고 들은 이야기와 개인적 경험을 토대로 식민지 타이완과 관련된 적지 않은 작품을 발표한 몇 안되는 여성 작가 중 하나로 앞으로는 일본 식민지 문학과 관련한 연구대상으로서 마스기의 작품들이 더욱 주목을 받을 것으로 예상된다. 여기에 본 논문에서 다룰 마스기 시즈에의 「남방의 말(南方の言葉)」은 1941년 발표된 마스기의 작품집 『전언(ことづけ)』의 가장 앞쪽에 수록된 대표적 단편소설로, 식민지 종주국 일본인 여성과 식민지 타이완의 현지인 남성의 결혼생활을 그린 보기 드문 작품이라는 점에서 희소성의 측면에서도 텍스트로서의 가치가 높다고 할 수 있다. 본고에서는 기존의 논의와는 다소 다른 관점과 각도로부터 본 작품에 접근하여, 「남방의 말」의 심층에서 작동하고 있는 식민지 지배국과 피지배국의 ‘언어’를 둘러싼 역학관계에 주목해봄으로써 식민지 양자간의 관계론과 작가의 내밀한 창작심리를 보다 다각적 · 다층적으로 분석해보고자 하였다. Masugi Shizue, who is better known for scandals she involved rather than her reputation as a writer, is a Japanese woman writer who was active for three decades since her debut in 1923 with Stationmaster’s Young Wife. Her name has yet been recognized in the literary circle of Korea as none of her work has been introduced or translated in Korean. There is hardly any literary research conducted on her literary works, however, Masugi, as one of few women writers who published autobiographical novels in the context of colonized Taiwan, is expected to earn more attention as a research subject of colonial literature in the near future. This study explores Masugi’s The Language of the South in The Message, a collection of her emblematic writings, delineates a married life of a Japanese woman and a colonial Taiwanese man. The work has its exceptional value in terms of scarcity as the main subjects have rarely been discussed in the Japanese literary world. Departing from prior discussions on the memories of colonialism, I take a different vantage point focusing on the dynamics between languages of colonialists and colonials in this study with a multi-angled approach in various dimensions.

가나이 미에코(金井美惠子) 「토끼(兎)」에 나타난 환상성과 섹슈얼리티 표현에 대한 고찰

The subject of this study, or a short story “Rabbits”, is one of the representative short stories by a Japanese female author, Kanai Mieko, who has built up her own independent literatures in her early days. Due to the shocking materials of literature and eccentricity, this short story not only became hot topic in Japan but also got spotlight abroad through translation. As the texts of “Rabbits” are so provocative and somewhat idealistic with its complicated structure, and the issue of narrative and fantasy factors, the short story is not only hard to interpret but also has the attractive texts which can be differently viewed in many respects. As such, the “fantasy”, which is found in the story in many different ways, can be said one critical keyword in understanding the text of “Rabbits”. In this study, the structure of the “Rabbits” would be reviewed along with the texts and the allegory and the implications in the fantasy of “Rabbits” would be analyzed. Then, the discussion would be expanded to include what kinds of implications the short story has at that time from the cultural and social perspective. In this process, the discussion would also deal with the key words such as “sexuality and love” which helps to understand the Kanai Literature. This process would show us how the expression of “sexuality” in the “girl” is cast in the frame of the fantastic work as one of the characters in the work and reborn as “Rabbits”, which is frequently seen in the early Kanai Literature, and what the “Rabbits” means in the Kanai Literature.

나카지마 아쓰시(中島敦)「부부(夫婦)」론 -텍스트에 나타난 아쓰시의 반전(反戰)사상적 알레고리와 식민지 팔라우에 대한 인식을 중심으로-

Atsushi Nakajima, who is also well-known in Korea as the author of “The Moon Over the Mountain”, is one of the authors often referred to in modern Japanese colonial literature due to his rich experience in colonialism. But the works of Atsushi, which were written in the South Seas where he spent his later years, have received relatively less attention in the history of Atsushi’s literature research. In the book “Tales of the Southern Islands” which Atsushi wrote on the theme of the South Seas, there are three short stories such as “Happiness”, “Couple” and “Chicken”. Among them, the predominant spotlight was put on “Happiness”, which reflects the trend of the existing study on the history of works by Atsushi who created his works with Chinese classical works as the motif. But this research takes “Couples”, which is the second short story in the book “Tales of the Southern Islands”, as the topic of this study. The reason I recommend to pay attention to “Couples” is because it is thought that Atsushi’s ideology on the time of war and his perception on the South Sea Islands which was a Japanese colony at that time reveals itself in the form of allegory through analogy and satire. Accordingly, I would like to check out the anti-war and anti-colonialism of the author focusing on his allegory of anti-war idea shown in the work and his perception of the residents on the Palau Island by closely analyzing the text and referring to the letters and diaries written by the author at that time. As the study on the works of Atsushi on the South Sea Islands literature has almost not even been tried in Korea, I think that this study will help people deeply understand Japan’s colonial literature and all literature works of Atushi Nakajima.
