A deep-sea manganese nodule miner consists of 4 parts: pickup device, crusher, disposal device and tracked vehicle. The tracked vehicle is an essential component in the self-propelled mining system moving on soft soil. Performances of the tracked vehicle are influenced by noise factors; track speed, seafloor slope, shear stress, bottom currents and reaction forces of flexible hose. It is necessary to adopt robust design method that improves performances as well as minimize the variation of performances due to noise factors. Robust design optimization using statistical moments based on multiplicative decomposition method, calculate statistical moments using explicit integral of kriging metamodel and probability density functions of noise factors, can accurately and efficiently search for the robust optimum. In this paper, we adopt robust design optimization using statistical moments based on multiplicative decomposition method for test miner tracked vehicle on collecting operation.

제품 생산 시 발생하는 제작 공차, 항복강도와 탄성계수 등 재료 물성치의 불확실성, 온도와 습도같이 시스템에 작용하는 환경인자 등은 시스템의 성능에 영향을 미친다. 강건 최적설계는 이러한 인자들이 시스템에 미치는 영향을 최소화하면서 성능을 개선하는 설계기법으로 최근 많은 연구가 이루어지고 있다. 하지만 기존의 강건 최적설계 기법은 여러 인자들의 분포를 고려해야 하기 때문에 막대한 계산비용이 드는 문제가 있다. 본 논문에서는 이러한 문제점을 개선하기 위하여 곱분해 기법을 이용한 강건 최적설계를 제안한다. 제안된 기법을 이용하여 설계영역을 크리깅 메타모델로 근사하고 곱분해 기법을 적용하여 평균과 분산을 효율적이고 정확하게 계산하여 강건 최적설계를 수행한다. 제안된 방법을 수학예제와 공학예제에 적용하여 유용성을 검증한다. The performance of a system can be affected by various variables such as manufacturing tolerances, uncertainties of material properties, and environmental factors acting on the system. Robust design optimization has attracted much attention in the design of products because it can find the best design solution that minimizes the variance of the response while considering the distribution of the variables. However, the computational cost and accuracy of optimization have thus far been a challenging problem. In this study, robust design optimization using the multiplicative decomposition method is proposed in order to solve these problems. Because the proposed method calculates the mean and variance of the system directly from the kriging metamodel using the multiplicative decomposition method, it can be used to search for a robust optimum design accurately and efficiently. Several mathematical and engineering examples are used to demonstrate the feasibility of the proposed method.

This study had the goal of designing onboard structures for a pre-pilot mining test (PPMT), which is required for the commercialization of the deep-sea mining industry. This PPMT is planned to validate the performance of a hydraulic lifting system and verify the concept of operating through a moon-pool in the east sea, Korea. All of the onboard equipment and facility were designed by KRISO. Because the test was performed at the first development, it is difficult to determine what risk will occur in the facility. Therefore, risk-based design is required in the facility for the PPMT, which includes the facility layout, failure mode and effect analysis (FMEA), and risk reduction plan. All of the expected performances of the lifting system itself and the onboard facilities were qualitatively validated using the risk-based design.

A deep-sea manganese nodule miner consists of 4 parts: the pickup device, crusher, disposal device, and tracked vehicle. The tracked vehicle is an essential component to keep the self-propelled miner moving across deep-sea soil. The performances of the tracked vehicle are influenced by noise factors: the shear strength of the seafloor, bottom current, seafloor slope, track speed, reaction forces of flexible hose, etc. It is necessary to adopt a robust design method that improves the performances and minimizes the variation caused by noise factors. Taguchi’s method, the most widely known robust design method, searches for the robust optimum using an orthogonal array composed of the product of the inner array and outer array. In this paper, we propose a new screening technique to reduce the number of input factors and apply the MRSN (Multi-Response Signal to Noise) ratio to convert multiple performances into single one in order to overcome the difficulties and limitations of using Taguchi’s method in a case with many input factors and multiple performances. A test miner was already designed and tested. It has about 1/10 the capacity of a commercial one and was successfully operated at an in-shore area. Taguchi’s robust design was applied to the tracked vehicle of the test miner, and design improvements were implemented for the vehicle.

제품의 성능은 시스템에 작용하는 환경인자, 재료 물성치와 같은 잡음인자의 변동에 큰 영향을 받는다. 제품의 성능을 위해서, 이러한 잡음인자의 변동에 따른 영향을 줄이는 것이 필요한데 이를 강건설계라 한다. 하지만 기존의 강건설계는 잡음인자의 변동이 아닌 설계변수의 변동을 중요하게 생각했다. 또한 변수와 인자의 분포를 정규분포로 가정해야 하는데 이는 실제 잡음인자의 분포와 맞지 않는 경우가 많다. 본 논문에서는 비 정규분포의 잡음인자의 분포를 고려하는 강건최적설계 기법을 제안한다. 제안된 기법은 실험을 통해 추정된 잡음인자의 비 정규분포 변동을 고려할 수 있다. 제안된 기법의 유용성을 확인하기 위해 공학예제로 심해저 망간 채집장치의 강건설계를 수행하였다. The performance of a system can be affected by the variance of noise factors, which arise owing to uncertainties of the material properties and environmental factors acting on the system. For robust design optimization of the system performance, it is necessary to minimize the effect of the variance of the noise factors that are impossible to control. However, present robust design techniques consider the variation of design factors, and not the noise factors, as being important. Furthermore, it is necessary to assume a normal distribution; however, a normal distribution is often not suitable to estimate the variations. In this study, a robust design technique is proposed to consider the variation of noise factors that are estimated as non-normal distributions in a real experiment. As an example of an engineering problem, a deep-sea manganese nodule miner tracked vehicle is used to demonstrate the feasibility of the proposed method.
