        근대를 향한 왜곡된 시선

정혜영(Hyae Young Chung) 한국현대소설학회 2006 현대소설연구 Vol.- No.31

Kim Nae Sung is a novelist representing Korean detective literature. While studying abroad in Japan, he showed up in the literature field in 1937 by publishing <A Mirror of Elliptical Shape> in a Japanese detective literature journal Profile. After that, he came back to Korea and publish more than ten detective novels. His detective novels published between late 1930s and early 1940s, such as <Carcass of Glass>, <A Poet of Wild Imagination> etc. and including two which was published in Japanese, are evaluated as have formed a new field of literature in Chosun where there had been no detective novels. But it is quite questionable whether Kim Nae Sung`s literature could prove real detective literature in the Chosun`s situation of 1930s where there was no establishment of popular literature fields, let alone detective literature. In fact, excepting the two detective novels published in Japan, the Kim Nae Sung`s detective novels published after his return to Korea exhibit more characteristics of literature, rather than that of a detective literatures. There appear mainly impulsive and destructive instincts such as murders, abnormal lusts etc. instead of reasoning and scientific logics. It seems difficult to say that this transformation is confined to Kim Nae Sung`s personal character change, because social factors like the change in space for literature creation and the change of class of readers are engaged in the process of the transformation. The difference found between the two detective literatures published in Japanese and the translation into Korean, and the awkward gaps between the reality and the characters found in a series of detective literatures published in Korean have important meanings. These kinds of problems found in Kim Nae Sung`s detective literatures give a clue to the possibility of the establishment of detective literature in Chosun. That is, the absence of reasoning which had always been found in the very few Korean detective literatures including <yumma>by Chae Man Shik is found again in Kim Nae Sung`s detective literature. Considering the modern characteristics based upon scientific reasoning and logics, this can lead to the question about whether there were actually any modern period of Chosun.

Vol.43 No.-

The word “Yeon Ae”, which is a term denoting affectionate relationship between man and woman, was formed in Japan as a translation of the English, “Love”. It was imported into Korea around 1910s and came into use. Afterwards, in a social and political atmosphere of the 1920s like mass return of study-abroad generation and total introduction of modern civilization which took place alongside the “culture politics” just after the “3.1 Movement”, the “Yeon Ae” becomes a dominant social trend. The influence of “Yeon Ae” among the contemporary society can be easily amassed through a newspaper editors" opinion which mentioned that “the whole society has been caught by "Love pestilence" like an influenza epidemic.”<BR>  It can be said that in the influence of “Yeon Ae” among the society, the overall meanings “Yeon Ae” as a symbol of modern thought like the equality between genders played a decisive role. In other words, in the epidemic of “Yeon Ae” in Chosun, a strong desire of transitional Chosun for the modern world was acting as a motive together with the romantic longing for the love and the excited intoxication with the “Yeon Ae”as a new culture. Therefore, looking into the process by which Chosun accepted and formed “Yeon Ae” could provide important materials for understanding modern Chosun.
