Lean combustion is one of the most promising method for increasing engine efficiency and reducing the exhaust emission from SI gas engines. Due to the possibility of partial burn and misfire, however, under lean burn operation, stable flame kernel formation and fast burn rate are needed to guarantee a successful subsequent combustion. Experiment data were obtained on a single-cylinder CNG fueled SI engine to investigate the effect of direct injection, spark timing and variation of injection timing. Experimental results show that lean burn limit is λ=1.3 with port injection, and expansion of lean burn limit λ=1.4 with direct injection method, due to increase of turbulence intensity in cylinder and stratified charge. Combustion duration in lean region is improved by using the variation of injection timing.
대형 직접분사식 CNG기관의 개발을 위한 기본성능 연구

Direct injection CNG engine is well known as the next generation of alternative gaseous power system with low emission and high performance characteristic. In order to estimate the feasibility of this engine, the basic performance characteristics of a heavy-duty single cylinder CNG engine are investigated by variation of engine speed and excess air ratio. The results shown that the test engine has high repetition because coefficient of cycle variation in indicated mean effective pressure is less than 5% as excess air ratio is smaller than the lean limit of 1.2. For full load conditions, 1400 rpm, the brake thermal efficiency are taken the maximum value of 30% at λ = 1.1
