Basal cell carcinoma (BCC) is the most common type of skin cancer. It typically develops on sun-exposed and hair-containing areas of the body, such as the head and neck regions. The occurrence on the palms and soles is very rare. A 66-year-old Korean woman presented with a red elliptical ulcerative nodule on her left palm. Biopsy revealed basaloid cell mass and nests in the dermis with basal cells containing dark and elongated nuclei. She was diagnosed with basal cell carcinoma, and wide excision with full-thickness skin graft was performed. To the best of our knowledge, no case of basal cell carcinoma on the palm without basal cell nevus syndrome has been reported in Korean literature. Herein, we report this case owing to its rare occurrence on such location. (Korean J Dermatol 2020;58(7):480∼482)

Crohn`s disease, a major form of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), is a chronic inflammatory condition that is characterized by microvascular and macrovascular involvement. Some extraintestinal complications can occur due to chronic systemic inflammation in IBD. Among them, a pulmonary thromboembolism is a rare manifestation of IBD but is associated with a high morbidity and mortality. To our best of knowledge, there is only one case report of a pulmonary thromboembolism as a complication of Crohn`s disease in Korea. We present another rare case of pulmonary thromboembolism as complication in a 25-year-old man with underlying Crohn`s disease.

Cactus spines can easily puncture the skin with only minor pressure. Removal of the offending cactus spine is the treatment of choice; however, it is very difficult, even with tweezers. A 17-year-old Korean girl presented for evaluation of multiple purple-colored macules and papules on the left cheek and left thumb. Two months earlier, she had pricked her finger and face on cactus spines while volunteering in Haiti. An ultrasound identified wedge-shaped echogenic materials suspected as cactus spines. We recommended surgical removal of the spines, but she vehemently refused. We then advised her to take amoxicillin/clavulanic acid and undergo regular follow-up. During the follow-up period, the spines dislodged spontaneously for easy removal and the patient removed them with tweezers. The lesions actually improved over the next several months. Here, we report this rare and interesting case for educational purposes because such a case has never been previously reported in Korea. (Korean J Dermatol 2019;57(8):484∼487)

Amputation of the lower extremities followed by the use of an artificial leg is very common. However, malignancy arising in an amputation stump is an extremely rare event. In this report, we describe a case of squamous cell carcinoma arising in the amputation stump of a 56-year-old Korean man. To the best of our knowledge, similar cases have not been previously reported in Korea. (Korean J Dermatol 2019;57(4):191∼193)

In the paper, a wireless charger with the function of auto-shutdown for fully implantale middle ear hearing devices (F-IMEHD) has been designed. The wireless charger can communicate with an implant module to be turned off automatically shutdown after an internal rechargeable battery has been fully-charged by electromagnetic coupling using two coils. For the communication with an implant module, the wireless charger uses the load shift keying (LSK) method. But, the variation of the mutual inductance due to the different distance between two coils can cause the communication error in receiving the fully-charged signal from an implant module. To solve the problem, the implemented wireless charger has a variable reference generator for LSK communication. The wireless charger generates proper level of the reference voltage for a comparator using an ADC (analog-to-digital converter) and a DAC (digital-to-analog converter). Through the result of experiment, it has been confirmed that the presented wireless charger can detect signals from implantable module. And wireless charger can stop generating electromagnetic flux after an implanted battery has been fully charged in spite of variable coil distance according to different skin thickness.

Implantable middle ear hearing devices (IMEHDs) have been widely studied as an alternative hearing aids to solve the problems of conventional hearing aids. Vibration transducer of middle ear hearing aids is a key component because vibration characteristics of transducer is directly involved performance of hearing aids. So, the study about middle ear hearing aids concentrate on the transducers. A floating mass type transducer is most efficient. In this paper, we suggest a lumped mechanical model of electromagnetic floating mass transducer implanted on human middle ear. The proposed model enables analysis of the vibration characteristics of a floating mass transducer and prediction of the variation after implant on ossicle that offers a simple and easy to analyze. The parameters was drawn based on the components and the structures of transducer. The Lumped mechanical model was converted by the electrical-mechanical equivalent model, and simulated using PSpice. So, we investigated vibration characteristics of transducer influenced it's components. And we predict vibration characteristics of stapes footplate due to implanted transducer's vibration using combining model of transducer and human ear. To prove the feasibility of the suggested model, we fabricated a differential floating mass transducer (DFMT) as one of floating mass transducers and performed experiments using the human temporal bones.

A microphone for fully implantable hearing device was generally implanted under the skin of the temporal bone. So, the implanted microphone`s characteristics can be affected by the accompanying noise due to masticatory movement. In this paper, the implantable microphone with 2-channels structure was designed for reduction of the generated noise signal by masticatory movement. And an experimental model for generation of the noise by masticatory movement was developed with considering the characteristics of human temporal bone and skin. Using the model, the speech signal by a speaker and the artificial noise by a vibrator were supplied simultaneously into the experimental model, the electrical signals were measured at the proposed microphone. The collected signals were processed using a general adaptive filter with least mean square(LMS) algorithm. To confirm performance of the proposed methods, the correlation coefficient and the signal to noise ratio(SNR) before and after the signal processing were calculated. Finally, the results were compared each other.
