The phytochemical study of Cacalia koraiensis Nakai (Compositae) led to the isolation of eight compounds, β-sitosterol (1) stifmasterol (2), phytol (3), β-sitosterol-3-0-glucopyranoside (4), adenostylol (5), campesterol (6), ger- macradien-4α-ol (7), and quercetin-3-rhamnoside (8). Their structures were established by chemical and spectroscopic methods. The cat()toxicity of the isolated compounds was evaluated by SRH assay against five cultured human tumor cell lines.

Study Design : The low lumbar spine have unique biomechanical, anatomical and neurological features as compared with the thoracolumbar spine. In the decisions with regard to sagittal plane deformity and treatment, lower spinal injuries should be considered to be different from thoracolumbar injuries. Objectives : This study was to analyze the results of the surgical treatment and evaluate the clinical significance of the modified sagittal index in the fractures of the low lumbar spine. Summary of Literature Review : The fractures of the low lumbar spine, when compared to the fractures of the thorcolumbar spine, are relatively rare. Although there are a significant number of publications on the treatment of thoracolumbar fractures, very few has been written on the treatment of low lumbar fractures. Materials and Methods : A retrospective review of radiographs and medical records was undertaken in 15 cases who had been treated surgically for the fractures of the low lumbar spine. The neurological assessment was based on the Frankel grade and the sagittal profile was evaluated using the modified sagittal index. Results : The average follow up period was 42.7 months (12 - 90 months). The extent of spinal canal involvemint were ranged between 20% and 100% (average, 64.1%), Clinically neurological recovery was improved 1.13 grades at the final follow up. 10 cases (66.7%) had combined injury in posterior columm and they had a tendency to be sustained more neural injuries. The postoperative sagittal restoration according to modified sagittal index was 23% in anterior decompression and stabilization group(ADS), 76% in posterior reduction and stabilization group(PRS), and 65% in anterior and posterior stabilization group(APS). At the final follow up, the loss of correction was 93% in ADS group, 23% in PRS group and 14% in APS group. There was negative corrlation between the modified sagittal index and the lumbar lordosis. Conclusion : Variable methods of surgical procedures for lower lumbar spinal injuries could be considered according to the mechanism of injury, the pattern of injury, neurological status, age, midical status and the presence of injury in posterior colum, etc. The modified sagittal index serves as an objective measurement of sagittal deformity for preoperative, postoperative and follow up evaluations.
