        스마트폰 어플리케이션을 활용한 영어 어휘학습의 효과

        This study compared the effects of two different smartphone vocabulary applications (Quizlet and Classcard) on student vocabulary achievement and their learning attitudes. A total of 42 university students majoring in Business English participated in the study for 10 weeks. One group performed the vocabulary task using Quizlet, whereas the other group performed the same vocabulary task using Classcard. To examine the students’ perceptions of using two different vocabulary applications, the two groups were asked to answer questionnaires on affective aspects. A comparison analysis of the pre/posttests and t-test were performed to compare the two groups’ statistical differences. The findings of the study are as follows: First, both Quizlet and Classcard were useful applications to improve vocabulary learning, but vocabulary improvement was statistically significant only in the Quizlet group, not in the Classcard group. Second, the students responses to the questionnaires showed that both applications were effective for learning vocabulary, but the Quizlet group felt more interested in their learning process than the Classcard group. Third, students perceptions toward the two smartphone applications revealed that both Quizlet and Classcard reduced affective pressure, resulting in differences in consistent interest, achievement, and use.

        대학생 영어 쓰기 학업성취도에 미치는 모바일 학습의 효과

        The purpose of this study is to investigate the effects of mobile-mediated learning on university students` English writing achievement and to explore their perspectives on using mobile devices in terms of cooperative learning, affective aspects and learning effects. For 10 weeks, a total of 48 university students majoring in Business English used the KakaoTalk in a classroom as a mobile messenger to enhance mobile-mediated group talk for the purpose of improving their writing skills for 20 minutes a week. In order to investigate if participants improved their writing skills, the pre and post TOEIC writing essay test were administered. Two classes were assigned into an experimental group vs. a traditional group depending on the use of the mobile-mediated group talk. A comparison analysis of the pre/post test, T-test and Ancova was performed to compare two groups` statistical differences. To examine the students` perceptions on using mobile-mediated group talk, data was collected from the students` survey and an interview. The major findings of the study are as follows. First, participants who used mobile-mediated group talk improved their writing achievement, and there was statistical significance in writing scores found in the posttest. Second, statistical differences between the control group without mobile apps and the experimental group with mobile apps was not significant in terms of mean differences in writing achievement. Third, students` responses to the questionnaires showed that the they found the traditional group talk in the classroom was more helpful and effective in learning than the mobile-mediated group talk. Fourth, there was no gender difference between males and females in terms of writing achievement. Based on the findings, educational implications for further research are discussed.

        AI 번역기를 활용한 활동이 대학생 영어쓰기 능력과 정의적 태도에 미치는 영향

        The purpose of this study is both to present the learning effectiveness of machine translators and to explore students’ perceptions of them. A total of 22 college students participated in the study. They were divided into two groups: the Papago group (10 students) and the Google group (12 students). The experiment operated for eight weeks in the two business presentation courses. They performed a pre-writing task on the paper as well as a post-writing task with their machine translator for two hours every week. Grammarly was employed to rate their writing proficiency for data analysis. Students completed a questionnaire for their perceptions. The findings indicated that both the groups improved their writing proficiency significantly, but the Papago group showed a higher statistical significance. Each group showed a significant improvement in sentence length. Second, students regarded machine translators as a useful tool for improving their writing proficiency. Lastly, the student responses indicated that they found more comfort and satisfaction with machine translators. Based on the findings, pedagogical implications for machine translators are discussed.

        Climate change is today recognized as one of the most serious challenges to the global and local community. The IPCC has concluded that most of the observed warming in global average surface temperature that has occurred since the mid-20th century is very likely a result of human activities. Our society has also experienced climate change; warmer winters, hotter summers and incidences of more extreme weather. Average temperature in Seoul has warmed at a rate of approximately 2.4°C from 1908 to 2007 that is almost triple the global rate in the past 100 years (1906-2005). Climate change is not only bringing subtropical diseases rarely found but also increasing flooding as rainfall become more intense during the summer in Seoul. Hotter temperatures will increase public health risks, particularly for vulnerable populations such as the elderly, and place further strains on our infrastructure. Seoul has already planned for a contribution to climate change and implemented action plans. The target of reducing Seoul`s GHG emissions by 25% of 1990 levels by 2020 and by 40% of 1990 levels by 2030, Seoul should know the strength and weakness in carrying out the plan by monitoring performance in order to successfully achieve greenhouse gas reduction goals. The aim of this study is to provide a monitoring framework for performance management meeting GHG emission reduction target and suggest policy-directions of improving an GHG target management in Seoul, The suggestions of this study are summarized as follows, 1. Seoul GHG Assessment Tool: This study suggests developing ``Seoul GHG Assessment Tool`` that all steps of reducing greenhouse gas are integrated into one system in Seoul:the steps include reporting GHG inventory, setting targets and action plans of GHG reduction, and evaluating performance of meeting the target. It is expected to enhance Seoul`s ability of managing performance, thus contribute much to meeting GHG reduction target in Seoul. 2. use of Seoul GHG Information Management System: In general, it needs to manage exceedingly mass data in order to devise strategy for reducing greenhouse gas and analysis the inventory. When it is extremely costly to produce a new system, it is able to use Seoul GHG Assessment Tool or GHG management systems established by government: NGMS (National Greenhousegas Management System) and GEIS (Greenhouse gas Emission Information System), etc. 3, establishment of monitoring system: The policy conditions and methodologies related to global warming have continuously modified, therefore we should enhance the flexibility for adapting the change in Seoul. For example, IPCC has modified and updated ``guidelines for national greenhouse gas inventories`` since the first report, so Seoul should also adapt its greenhouse gas inventory according to their revision. It is natural that the revisal has an effect on national and local target for climate change. 4, annual progress reporting of GHG reduction plans: New York and London have published the annual progress reports which show their achievement and performance of climate change plans. Those play an important role as informing the progress of plans to citizen and officer. It should be pointed out that local society take part in the action plans, thus Seoul have a duty to report the action plans and performance. 5, introduction of energy management system (ISO50001): According to the implementation of GHG and energy target management that divides the greenhouse gas target into public and private sectors in Korea, some experts predict to increase the works of management greenhouse gas reduction in local government. It is able to reduce the burden of the policy implementation as applying international standard of energy management system (ISO50001). The system stresses the involvement of executive leadership, saying that top management must establish, implement and maintain an energy policy. They must identify the scope of the system, communicate its importance, ensure that appropriate targets and performance indicators are established and ensure that results are measured.
