A homogeneous premixed charge compression ignition engine has been experimentally studied for the reduction exhaust emissions of diesel engines. In this study, the gasoline fuel is injected into the intake manifold to form homogeneous pre-mixture in the combustion chamber and then this pre-mixture is ignited by small amount of diesel fuel directly injected into the cylinder. In the premixed charge compression ignition engine, NOx and smoke concentration of the exhaust emissions were reduced simultaneously as compared with the conventional diesel engine. The combustion characteristics of premixed charged diesel engine such as the power output, the rate of heat release, and the other characteristics are discussed.

In this work, a single cylinder DI diesel engine equipped with common-rail injection system was used to investigate the effect of biodiesel on the combustion and emission characteristics. In order to compare the emissions of oxygenated fuel with the diesel fuel, tested fuels were neat diesel and biodiesel obtained from soybean oil. Experimental results show that the peak injection rate is reduced when the engine is fueled with biodiesel. The peak combustion pressure of biodiesel was higher than that of neat diesel at an injection pressure of 100㎫. The ignition delay of biodiesel was reduced due to a higher cetane number of the biodiesel. HC and CO emissions are decreased at a high injection pressure and IMEP, thermal efficiency are also increased. However, NOx, emission of biodiesel combustion was increased compared with diesel combustion. Cooled-EGR increased the ignition delay and decreased maximum combustion pressure and the NOx, emission was rapidly decreased with 30% of EGR rate.

This paper presents the effect of injection pressure on atomization characteristics of high-pressure gasoline injector both experimentally and numerically. The macroscopic and microscopic structures of the hollow-cone spray such as spray development process, spray penetration and the distribution of mean droplet size are investigated by using a shadowgraph technique and phase Doppler particle analyzer. Also, the numerical researches using various hybrid models are performed. LISA model and WAVE model are used for the primary breakup, and TAB, DDB, and RT model are used for the secondary breakup. It is revealed that LISA-RT and WAVE-RT hybrid models show reasonable accordance with the experimental results in the case of low injection pressure and at high injection pressure LISA-DDB model indicates good agreement with the experimental results.

The characteristics of combustion and emission of biodiesel fuel were investigated in a single cylinder DI diesel engine equipped with a common rail injection system. This work is to investigate the spray characteristics and visualization of spray developing on the LPG direct injection engine. The spray visualization and spray development process are carried out by using the visualized single cylinder engine. The injection mass of fuel is increased in accordance with the increase of elapsed time alter the start of injection. The macroscopic behaviors of the fuel spray show that the spray tip penetrations of LPG spray is longer than that of gasoline spray. Also the behaviors of in-cylinder flow and LPG spray in the combustion chamber are visualization cylinder of its engine.
