Objective : The purpose of this study is to present the epidemiological data on patients with a stroke admitted to Department of Acupuncture & Moxibustion, Oriental Medical Hospital Kyung Hee University and to investigate the difference between preceding diseases of stroke. Methods : We reviewed medical records of 700 patients with a stroke admitted to Department of Acupuncture & Moxibustion, Oriental Medical Hospital, Kyung Hee University. Results: The incidence of cerebral infarction was 6.7 times that of cerebral hemorrhage. The incidence in males was 1.28 times of that in females. The incidence of stroke increased with aging and more cerebral hemorrhage occured in lower age group than cerebral infarction. There was higher morbidity in October, during the changing of the seasons, than any other months. Hypertension was the most common preceding disease followed by diabetis mellitus, heart disease, hyperlipidemia, and according to Odds's ratio for Male/Female, the probability of having preceding diseases was higher in females than males. In cerebral infarction, MCA territory was the most frequent lesion sites. Of the cerebral hemorrhage, basal ganglia (60%) was the most commonly involved site which was followed by thalamus(33.3%), cortex (3.3%) and subcortex (2.2%). The most common symptom accompanied by stroke was motor dysfunction which was followed by verbal disturbance, urination disorder and dysphagia. Conclusion : This study showed the trends of stroke in Oriental medical center. We expects that Multicenter cooperative and prospective study including Oriental Medicine will be inspired by this study for establishing more accurate chacteristics of stroke in Korea in the future.

Objectives: Cue reactivity is a key factor that modulates motivational goal-directed behavior associated with compulsive drug-taking and relapse. We investigated whether acupuncture attenuated the skin conductance response and the heart rate response to smoking-related visual cues in smokers. Methods: Twenty-nine smokers were treated with real acupuncture (RA) or sham acupuncture (SA). The stress response inventory was measured on the 5th day after quitting smoking. The skin conductance response and the heart rate were measured to evaluate the autonomic changes to the smoking related visual cues on the same day. Results: The sympathetic alterations in skin conductance and the heart rate induced by the smoking-related visual cues were significantly lower in the RA group, as compared to the SA group. The stress response inventory, such as somatization and frustration, in the RA group was significantly lower than that of the SA group. Conclusions: Acupuncture ameliorated the stress symptoms as well as the sympathetic activation to smoking cues during withdrawal. These findings indicate that acupuncture might be a useful tool in smoking cessation by inhibiting smoking cues-induced autonomic responses.

Background: The cun measurement system, an essential and convenient method in locating acupoints, has been widely used in the practice of acupuncture. However, traditional cun measurement has been criticized for its lack of reliability. Objectives: The purposes of this study are to determine if one cun measured by the directional methods have a consistency with that of proportional methods and to investigate which factors are related with these differences, especially in forearm. Methods: The distance between the elbow crease and the wrist crease of forearm was compared to a reference value of one cun obtained by the directional method. In this method, one cun is one third of the distance between index finger and small finger of a subject, measured at proximal interphalangeal joint. In addition, to investigate the factors influencing the differences between these two methods, we measured the height and body weight and calculated body mass index (BMI). Finally we analyzed the factors correlated with these lengths by linear regression teat. Results: The results showed that one cun obtained by the directional methods were significantly different from one cun by the proportional methods in forearm. It was demonstrated that the length acquired with the directional method was more correlated with body weight and body mass index, while the length obtained by the proportional method was more correlated with the height. Conclusion: These findings suggest that the directional method is less likely dependable in locating acupoints than the proportional method because the influencing factors are different.

Parkinson's disease (PD) is a chronic neurodegenerative disorder, and it has been suggested that treatments promoting survival and functional recovery of affected dopaminergic neurons could have a significant and long-term therapeutic value. In the present study, we investigated the neuroprotective effects of acupuncture on the nigrostriatal system in rat unilasterally lesioned with 6-hydroxydopamine (6-OHDA, 4 ㎍/㎕, intrastriatal injection) using tyrosine hydroxylase (TH) and receptor for brain-denved neruotrophic factor, trkB, immunohistochemistries. Two weeks after the lesions were made, rats presented with asymmetry in rotational behavior (118.3 ± 17.5 turns/h) following injection with apomorphine, a dopamine receptor agonist (0.5 ㎎/㎏, sc). In contrast, acupunctural treatment at acupoints GB34 and LI3 was shown to significantly reduce this motor deficit (146 ± 13.4 turns/h). Analysis via TH immunohistochemustry revealed a substantial loss of cell bodies in the substantia nigra (SN) (45.7% loss) and their terminals in the dorsolateral striatum ipsilateral to the 6-OHDA-induced lesion. However, acupunctural treatment resulted in the enhanced survival of dopaminergic neurons in the SN (21.4% loss) and their terminals in the dorsolateral striatum. Acupuncture also increased the expression of trkB significantly (35.6% increase) in the ipsilateral SN. In conclusion, we observed that only acupuncturing without the use of any drug has the neuroprotective effects against neuronal death in the rat PD model and these protective properties of acupuncture could be mediated by trkB.
