Two triterpenoid saponins were isolated from the methanol extract of Caltha minor leave(Ranunculaceae). The structure of these saponin were elucidated as hederagenin-3-0-alpha-rhamnopyranosyl(1->2)-alpha-L-arabinopyranoside and 3-0-alpha-L-rhamnopyranosyl(1->2)-alpha-L-arabinopyranosyl hederagenin 28-0-alpha-L-rhamnopyranosyl(l->4)-beta-D-glucopyranosyl(l->6)-beta-D-glucopyranosyl ester.

2188 volunteered for blood donation in blood bank of Wonju Christian Hospital during the period from January to December, 1993. Through the performing the physical examination, history, specific gravity of blood, and blood typing, 1781 were found eligible for blood donation and 1706 donated blood. The results obtained were summarized as follows. 1. The donors mainly consisted of 21-29 year-old group(63.7%) and 30-39 year-old group(23.7 %) with male to female ratio of 9.6: 1 2. The occupation of donors was soldier(30.0 %), employee(22.4 %) student(21.3 %), public service personnel(4.9 %), and others(21.3 %). 3. Among the all 2188 candidates, 407(18.6 %)were deferred due to various diseases(47.6 %), abnormal blood pressure(23.1 %) and ABO incompatibility against the directed recipient(l1.8 %) poor vessels(5.4 %), low specific gravity of blood(4.4 %), and underage donor(4.1 %), and other causes. 4. Among the 1,706 donor bloods tested for serological markers, 109(6.4 %) units were discarded due to positive HBsAg(42.6 %), positive anti-HCV(2.7 %), reactive VORL test (9.2 %), elevated ALT level(39.4 %), and simultaneously increased ALT with positive HBsAg(6.4 %). 5. 1552(91 %)were directed donors and 154 were purely voluntary donors. All directed blood units were transfused to the directed recipients as the whole blood. Departements that wanted the directed blood donors were general surgery, chest surgery, internal medicine, pediatrics, and others.

Three crude saponins having the same aglycone were isolated from the root of Caltha minor NAKAI which has been known to be of effect as emetics in the folk medicines of Korea. And they were confirmed to their saponoidal properties through the methods of hemolytic test and LIEBERMANN-BUCHARD reaction.

Objectives: The present study investigated Inflammatory effect of Coptidis Rhizoma in lipopolysaccharide-exposed rats and Raw 264.7 cells. Methods: The plasma concentration of IL-1β, IL-6 and TNF-α peaked at 5 h after LPS injection, and the values of the Coptidis Rhizoma extract groups were lower than those of the control group. In the increment of cytokines concentration at 2 h and 5 h after LPS injection, the Coptidis Rhizoma groups were lower than that of control group. The plasma concentration of IL-10 peaked at 5 h after LPS injection, and the values of the Coptidis Rhizoma extract groups were higher than those of the control group. In the increment of cytokines concentration at 2 h and 5 h after LPS injection, the Coptidis Rhizoma groups were higher than that of control group. Liver cytokines measurement was done at 5 h after LPS injection. The concentration of liver IL-1β and IL-6 in the Coptidis Rhizoma groups was lower than that of the control group. The concentrations of liver TNF-α, and IL-10 showed no significant differences among all the treatment groups. Results: In the studies of lipopolysaccharide-exposed Raw 264.7 cells, the concentration of IL-1β, IL-6 and TNF-α in the lipopolysaccharide-exposed cells groups was higher than that of control group (normal group), and in the lipopolysaccharide-exposed cells groups, these values showed a tendency to decrease in the Coptidis Rhizoma groups. The concentration of IL-10 in the lipopolysaccharide-exposed cells groups was higher than that of control group (normal group), and in the lipopolysaccharide-exposed cells groups, the values showed a tendency to increase in the Coptidis Rhizoma groups. Conclusions: These results indicate that the Coptidis Rhizoma extracts have an functional material for Inflammatory activities.

사과에 분포하는 페놀계 물질의 총 함량을 분석하는데 가장 적절한 방법을 확립하기 위하여 우리나라에서 재배되는 4품종을 각각 5개 지역에서 수집한 20개 종류의 사과를 시료로 가장 효율적인 분석조건을 조사하였다. 천연재료 줌의 총 페놀 정량방법으로 이용되고 있는 분광광도법인 Foline-Dennis법, Prussian-blue법 그리고 vanillin-HCI법을 각각 시료에 적용하여 총 페놀 함량을 측정하여 고찰하였다. 그 결과 chlorogenic acid 상당량으로 산출한 Folin-Dennis법이 사과의 총 페놀 정량방법으로 가장 적합하였다. Total amounts of phenolic compounds of Korean apples were determined by UV-visible spectrphotometry of Folin-Dennis, Prussian-blue and vanillin-HCI, respectively. The analytical data from the method of Folin-Dennis were estimated to be the most reasonable to determine the total amounts of phenolic compounds in Korean apples. It was also confirmed that the amounts of total phenolics could be calculated as chlorogenic acid equivalence, more effectively than that of other phenolic compound equivalence.
