The objective of this study is to develop and evaluate ground heat exchanger using building foundation. So we changed PHC piles into ground heat exchanger and evaluate it's heating and cooling performance. First, we studied building foundation system, heat exchanger pipe, grouting materials. As a result we designed BIGS(Building Integrated Geothermal System) prototype. Second, we applied BIGS to apartment houses' utility building in Osan Sema built and Greenhome Plus energy saving 80% test bed in Song-Do. Third, we monitored heating performance of winter season in Osan and cooling performance of summer season in Song-Do.

The purpose of this study is to investigate emission characteristics of pollutant sources and to improve the Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) in apartment houses. The field measurement was conducted in four different apartment house complexes located in Seoul. The result of the measurement shows that indoor concentrations of HCHO and VOC's are much higher than the foreign standards. The result of the study indicates that the basic thermal environment elements such as temperture, measurement position, lapse have a valid effect on the concentration of pollutant sources.

Cellulose insulation for use in building applications is primarily manufactured from recycled newsprint or cardboard using shredders and fiberizers. Cellulose insulation as a product is about 80 wt.% cellulosic fiber and 20 wt.% chemicals, most of which are fire retardants such as boric acid and ammonium sulfate. It was introduced into Korea in the 1980s when several small companies started production. The cellulose industry in Korea is in an early stage of development with current production of about 1000 tons a year. On the other hand, in North America, cellulose insulation has been used since the 1940s and many studies have been done to improve its physical properties and performance. About 750,000 tons of paper has been recycled as cellulose insulation annually for the past two years in the U.S. That would imply a production volume of about 940,000 tons of cellulose insulation per year. For broader use of cellulose insulation in buildings in Korea, it is necessary to establish its thermal performance. To this end, the effect of density and temperature on the thermal conductivity of loose-fill cellulose insulation manufactured in Korea and U.S. was recently studied.
