The purpose of this study is to explore how the achievement motivation and sex-role identity affect career decision making of college students, as measured by the Assessment o Career Decision Making(ACDM) and Personal Attributes Questionnaire(PAQ). The sample for this study consisted of 866 male and 362 female students from two universities in the metropolitan area of Seoul. The results of the study are as follows: Male students scored statistically higher than female students on achievement motivation, initiative, aggressive, and altruistic scales among sex-role identity subfactors, and school adjustment of career decision making scales. But among these scales, there is no practically significant difference in achievement motivation, altruistic, and school adjustment scales between male and female groups. No significant difference was found in the career decision making types and levels. Using stepwise method of multiple regression analysis, the results revealed that initiative scale of masculine characteristics is positively correlated with rational score of career decision making types and levels. Also effeminity among female characteristics is positively correlated with the types of intuition and dependence. Especially, for the female students, effeminity is negatively correlated with the planning career orientation. Also, the higher achievement motivation is, the more rational characteristic in career decision making types and the higher level of career decision making appears. The results suggested that when career guidance and counseling program is planned for college students, it is important to consider personal characteristics instead of gender classification. Especially, it seemed very crucial to provide training programs for female students to develop initiative characteristic and related personal skills of masculine characteristics of sex role identity and achievement motivation. Furthermore, it is important for both male and female students to develop rational characteristics and to reduce dependent characteristics in career decision making types.
