We strudied the characterization and measurement of estrogen receptors in 21 patients with pituitary adenomas. The follwing results were obtained. 1) The concentrations of cytosolic estrogen receptors(fmole/mg protein) of lactotrope(241.2±93.8) and gonadotrope adenomas (308±138.1) were higher than those of somatotrope adenomas(49.4±19.2)(p$lt;0.05), but not different form those of corticotrope(151.4±40.3)and null cell adenomas(122.3±41.6). The concentrations of nuclear estrogen receptors of the pituitary adenomas were not significantly different from each others. 2) Macroprolactinoma had a high concentration of cytosolic(300.9±102.5 fmole/mg protein)and nuclear estrogen receptor(859.7±470.6 fmole/mg protein) comparing to microprolactinoma (62.2, 140.2 fmole/mg protein). 3) Srum prolactin levels had a correlation with the concentration of cytosolic estrogen receptors(r=0.66, p=0.001), but no correlation with nuclear estrogen receptors(r=0.12, p=0.3). 4) Cytosolic and nuclear estrogen receptors of the a(except corticotrope adenoma) with serum prolactin levels higher than 50ng/ml were higher than those of ones with prolactins lower than 50ng/ml. These results demonstrated the various levels of estrogen receptors in pituitary adenomas. The concentrations of estrogen receptors were higher in patients with high serum prolactin levels and macroprolactinomas. (J Kor Soc Endocrinol 7:208~215, 1992)
