Combat power is the ability of military units to perform combat and achieve military goals on the battlefield. It is divided into tangible and intangible combat power. Intangible combat power, which involves morale, fighting spirit, perseverance, leadership, and so on, can decisively influence a side’s victory in battle. Although combat power is highly advanced today due to the development of science and technology, the human mind is a key factor in winning or losing a war. Recently, Republic of Korea Army attempted to implement Morale Education using Army Band, rather than traditional lecture-oriented education, to strengthen the morale of its personnel. However, to date, the effectivity of this educational method has not been sufficiently examined. Therefore, this study designs a Morale Education program using Army Band based on the ASSURE model to analyze the effectivity of Morale Education and then applies it to field troops to examine the effectivity of the program. In addition, based on the results of this study, we discuss ways to strengthen the morale of military personnel and suggest some related directions for development.

본 연구는 한국 영화가 묘사하는 군(軍)의 전형적 모습을 분석하여 대중이 인식하는 군(軍)의 이미지를 진단함을 목적으로 한다. 이를 위해 천만 관객을 동원하여 국민적 흥행을 확인한 4편의 영화를 선정하였고, 작품 속에서 나타나는 군(軍)의 이미지를 분석하여 대한민국 사회가 가지는 군(軍)에 대한 부정적 인식을 확인하였다. 분석 결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 대한민국 국민에게 ‘입대’란 성공하지 못하고 경쟁에서 뒤쳐진 자에게 주어지는 것이며, 둘째, 군의 권력 앞에서 사병은 권위에 순응해야 한다. 셋째, 군은 국민에게 감시 받지 않는 무소불위의 권력기관이자 어떠한 악행도 은폐될 수 있는 비밀의 기관이며, 넷째, 군은 개성이 용납되지 않는 획일적 집단이자, 국민을 지켜야 하는 사명에서 돌변하여 국민에게 가장 큰 위협이 될 수도 있다. 연구를 통해 한국영화는 군(軍)을 향해 반성을 촉구하는 메시지를 던지고 있음을 확인할 수 있었다. 남북분단의 위중한 상황에서 굳건한 안보를 위해서는 대중적 지지와 성원의 확보가 필수적이다. 그러나 영화에서 나타나는 부정적인 군의 이미지는 군을 바라보는 대중의 인식을 저해함으로써 국방(國防)의 잠재적 장애물이 될 수 있다. 또한 과거 군의 강압과 폭력으로 인해 상처받은 경험이 영화로써 재현되고 있음을 확인하였다. 이에 군은 영화 속에서 반영된 현실을 직시해야 하며, 개선을 위한 노력이 절실히 요구된다. This research takes purpose in diagnosing the image of the military by analyzing the typical visualization of it in the portrayal of the film industry and public perception. For this purpose, four movies accomplished with more than ten million viewers were chosen to be analyzed of the visualization of the military, thus confirming the negative perception the Korean society has. The result of the analysis is as follows. Firstly, “Enlistment” for the Korean citizens is for the unsuccessful and those that fall behind others. Secondly, the enlisted must obey the power of the military. Thirdly, the military is a covert, omnipotent authority that can cover up any misdeed without being observed by the civilian. Lastly, the military is a monolithic mass that does not tolerate individuality and can turn from its duty of protecting the people to becoming the greatest threat of the nation. Through research, it was apparent that the Korean movies were urging the Korean military to reflect upon itself. For Korea is devided in North and South, public support is beyond crucial in steadfast national defense. However, the negative view of the military in the films can become a potential obstacle in national security by undermining the public perception of the army. In addition, it could be seen that the traumatic experience of being abused by the military was reproduced in the movies. Therefore, the military must face the truth that is shown in the films and strive for improvement.
