        Linguistic Representations of Korean Immigrant English in North American Media Space : An Analysis of Appa s English in Kim s Convenience

With the increasing importance of the mass media in social life and the linguistic changes it incurs, sociolinguistic research on linguistic representations in cinematic discourse has been increasing recently. Situated within this growing body of emerging scholarship in sociolinguistics, this study examines how Korean immigrant English is represented in a Canadian TV sitcom, Kim’s Convenience . Drawing on the perspective that linguistic performances in fictional discourse serve as resources for sociolinguistic styling and characterization, this paper investigates how the linguistic representations of Korean immigrant English contribute to authenticating the character of a middle-aged male Korean immigrant called Appa in the TV series. For this purpose, Appa s English used throughout the TV series first season (13 episodes) was analyzed at the phonological, syntactic, lexical, thematic, and semiotic levels. The analysis revealed that each linguistic level shows distinct but concerted efforts regarding the authentication of Appa as a Korean immigrant. The phonological features of his English effectively share those of Korean English, whereas the syntactic representations are characteristic of a simple register. The lexical, thematic, and semiotic representations additionally reinforce Appa s “Koreanness” through the sitcom s integration of topics and images related to Korean culture.

        엔진 고공 시험에서 연료 유량 측정용 터빈 유량계의 측정 불확도 분석

        Measurement uncertainty analysis of fuel flow using turbine flowmeter was performed for the case of altitude engine test. SAE ARP4990 was used as the fuel flow calculation procedure, as well as the mathematical model for the measurement uncertainty assessment. The assessment was performed using Sensitivity Coefficient Method. 11 parameters involved in the calculation of the flow rate were considered. For the given equipment setup, the measurement uncertainty of fuel flow was assessed in the range of 1.19~1.86 % for high flow rate case, and 1.47~3.31 % for low flow rate case. Fluctuation in frequency signal from the flowmeter had the largest influence on the fuel flow measurement uncertainty for most cases. Fuel temperature measurement had the largest for the case of low temperature and low flow rate. Calibration of K-factor and the interpolation of the calibration data also had large influence, especially for the case of very low temperature. Reference temperature, at which the reference viscosity of the sample fuel was measured, had relatively small contribution, but it became larger when the operating fuel temperature was far from reference temperature. Measurement of reference density had small contribution on the flow rate uncertainty. Fuel pressure and atmospheric pressure measurement had virtually no contribution on the flow rate uncertainty.

        적층각이 다른 CFRP/Al 혼성 원형부재의 충돌안전성능 평가

        The actual condition is that environmental pollution due to the development of various industries has recently become a serious issue. An interest in improving the gas mileage is rising due to an increase in the number of vehicles in the era of high oil price in particular. In order to solve this problem, priority should be given to light-weight design of car body, However, at present, a design method enabling the conventional steel plate to be replaced is direly needed in order to guarantee passengers`` safety according to excessive light-weight design of car body. In this study, in order to apply a design method that could realize fuel savings and environmental pollution prevention through an improvement in gas mileage together with meeting the safety requirements for vehicles, it was supposed that CFRP/Al composites member would be used as primary structural member. And to this end, it was intended to obtain optimum design data by experimentally implementing external impulsive load applied to the car body. According to results of impact test of CFRP/Al composites member, a collapsed shape of folding, crack, and bending occurred. So, it was possible to find that energy was observed. And in case of specimen having an angle of 90° in the outermost layer and stack sequence of [90°2/0°2]s, its collapsed length was shown to be short. Therefore, it was possible to find that the absorbed energy was shown to be higher by 20% or above at the maximum.

      • 열습환경 하에서의 CFRP 박육부재의 압궤특성

        It is important to satisfy the requirements and standards for the protections of passengers in a car accident. There are lots of studies on the crushing energy absorption of a structure members in automobiles. In this paper, we have studied to investigate collapse characteristics and moisture absorption movements of CFRP structure members when CFRP(carbon fiber reinforced plastics) laminates are under the hygrothermal environment. In particular, the absorbed energy, mean collapse load and deformation mode were analyzed for side members which absorbed most of the collision energy. Also, variation of CFRP interlaminar numbers is important to increase the energy absorption capability. Therefore we have made a static collapse experiment to research into the difference of absorbed energy and deformation mode between moisture absorbed specimen and non-moisture absorbed.

        CFRP/Al 혼성 사각부재의 충격에너지 흡수 메카니즘의 실험적 고찰

        In this study, the collapse characteristic of CFRP/Al compound square tube was investigated experimentally. The conclusions are as follows; The impact collapse characteristic of CFRP/Al compound square tube was found to be the most superior stacking conditions [90°]8. It showed that a very stable collapse mode was crushing. In the member with [0°2/90°2]s and [90°2/0°2]s, stacking conditions, 0° fibers were splayed to the external by laminar bending, while the 90° fibers were held between the folds of the aluminum member by laminar bending, local buckling and transverse crack. In the member with [45°2/45°2]s stacking conditions, fibers were held between the folds of the aluminum member by local buckling and transverse crack.

        The most important purpose in designing vehicles is currently to focus on environment-friendly, economical, safety performance aspect. As for the environment-friendly and economical aspect, the issues are the overall movements toward lightweight vehicle production because of the fuel-efficiency improvement and heavier restriction on exhaust, however in contrast, the issues of the safety performance such as crush, comfort level and multi-functional programs lead to increase of vehicle weight. Therefore, the designing vehicles should be more interested in the aspect of securing safety performance, but at the same time, it also should consider reducing weight of structural member of vehicle. In this study, to lower the weight of side members, CFRP side members were manufactured by CFRP uni-direction prepreg sheet. The stacking condition related to the energy absorption of composite materials is being considered as an issue for the structural efficiency. Therefore, the axial collapse tests were conducted by changing the stacking condition such as fiber orientation angle and interlaminar number. In this paper the results of experimental works pertaining to the orientation angle and interlaminar number characteristics of CFRP(Carbon Fiber Reinforced Plastic) hat shaped section members that were subjected to static axial compressive loading are presented.

        충격하중을 받은 CFRP 적층판의 손상거동과 잔류굽힘피로강도

        In this paper, static and fatigue bending strengths of CFRP(carbon fiber reinforced plastic laminates having impact damage(FOD) are evaluated. Composite laminates used for this experiment are CF/EPOXY and CF/PEEK orthotropy laminated plates, which have two-interfaces[${0^0}_4{90^0}_4}$]$_sym$. A steel ball launched by the air gun colides against CFRP laminates to generate impact damages. The damage growth during bending fatigue test is observed by the scanning acoustic microscope(SAM). When the impacted side is compressed, the residual fatigue bending strength of CF/PEEK specimen P is greater that that of CF/EPOXY SPECIMEN B. On the other hand, when the impacted side is in tension, the residual fatigue bending strength of CF/PEEK speicemen P is smaller than that of CF/EPOXY specimen B. In the case of impacted-side compression, fracture is proposed from the transverse crack generated near impact point. On the other hand, fracture is developed toward the impact point from the edge of interface-b delamination in the case of impacted-side tension.

        The carbon fiber reinforced plastics, one of unidirectional fiber-reinforced composite materials, are widely used in various field including space and aviation industries, sports and leisure industries and general structural members and parts as have high strength in comparison with the weight, elasticity coefficient, high fatigue strength and lower thermal transformation. The CFRP has the characteristics of complexity behavior to vary as direction of angle and geometry model. So we are undergoing to define hardly the CFRP material constant. On this study, the CFRP specimen changed to stack orientation angle, manufactures as general structure and make an experiment on bending for bending strength and rigidity.         고등학생들의 영어과 역량 강화를 위한 고교-대학 연계 영어 프로그램에 관한 연구

        The purposes of this study are: first, to report the results of conducting an English camp at a university for 40 high school students and, second, to find a more systematic connection between the educational field and a pre-service teacher training program. Specifically, the camp provided English programs utilizing suggested activities to strengthen the core competencies required by the 2015 revised curriculum, and the students completed a questionnaire about participating in the activities to improve each competency. The responses were statistically analyzed including between-subject variables such as their school grades, their age for English education, their experience in English-speaking countries, and their self-reported level of fluency and nervousness in speaking English. The results are summarized as follows: First, the students were satisfied with the camp program overall, and their satisfaction with each core competency was a little lower than the overall satisfaction. Second, students’ English speaking fluency turned out to be statistically meaningful in recognizing activities regarding English communication competency. Third, the degree of nervousness in speaking English proved to be significant in recognizing activities to improve knowledge-information processing competency. Based on these results, the implications for education to cultivate the English subject competency, and cooperation between teacher training institutions and secondary education institutions are discussed.
