The effects of EGR on performance and emissions were investigated in this study. The engine used for the tests was a six-cylinder 8 litre turbo-charged heavy-duty diesel engine with a low pressure route EGR system. The quantity of recirculated gas was controlled by a manually operated valve which is installed between the turbin outlet and compressor inlet. The experiments were performed at various engine speeds and loads while the EGR rates were varied. Exhaust emissions with the EGR system were compared to the baseline emissions. To evaluate the availability of EGR technology, further testing was performed using 0-13 mode steady-state test procedure.<br/> It was found that the exhaust emissions with the EGR system resulted in a very large reduction in NOx at the expense of higher smoke and PM emissions, especially at high loads. Also, the power and fuel economy deteriorated substantially. Results of the 0-13 test indicated that the proposed 200012002 NOx standards were met.<br/>
